Book excerpt: Artist Maurice Robert Bebb (American, 1891-1986), renowned for the prints of American birds he produced over five decades, didn't turn to printmaking until later in life. Looking back, he mused, "I wanted to draw and paint for years and years before I had the nerve to dirty a piece of paper." Largely self-taught, Bebb established a national reputation as an exceptional etcher. He created more than two hundred print designs in his lifetime-about half were of midwestern birds-and produced gift prints for the Chicago Society of Etchers, the Prairie Print Makers, and the Print Makers of California. In Birds & Beyond: The Prints of Maurice R. Bebb, former Bebb student Jim Harbison writes a warm-hearted, personal account of making prints in the artist's home studio and explains the printmaker's meticulous process. Cori Sherman North, curator to the Birger Sandzn Memorial Gallery, details a history of printmaking in the United States before 1950, setting the stage for Bebb's work. And John R. Mallery, a longtime collector of Bebb's prints, provides a brief biography of the artist.

Book Enchanted by Prairie

Download or read book Enchanted by Prairie written by Osha Gray Davidson and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: June grass at sunset, Indian grass at sunrise, hawk moths and monarch butterflies nectaring on purple fringed orchids and rough blazing star, little bluestem and saw-tooth sunflowers and butterfly milkweed in hill prairies and sand prairies, and blue skies and one bright rainbow arching over them all. Bill Witt has been photographing Iowa's wild places for more than thirty years, and the result is this collection of splendid images that reveal the glorious beauty and diversity of the state's prairie remnants. Witt gives us close-ups of pasque flower shoots covered with ice in spring, coneflowers dancing in a summer breeze, and prairie dropseed in its autumn colors as well as such prairie companions as sandhill cranes, northern harriers, and bison. His panoramic visions of prairie landscapes in all seasons focus on the personal pleasure and spiritual sustenance that connecting with prairies, even small and neglected ones, can bring us. Osha Davidson's essay compares today's prairie remnants with yesterday's expanses and calls for us to restore balance to this damaged landscape. Altogether, Enchanted by Prairie celebrates today's prairie landscape and encourages us, in Davidson's words, to restore its "beauty and scents and textures and sounds."

Book Birger Sandz n

  • Pages : 224 pages

Download or read book Birger Sandz n written by Emory Lindquist and published by University Press of Kansas. This book was released on 1993 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combining biography - based on excerpts from letters, interviews, and critical art reviews - with a selection of Sandzen's art, this book by Emory Lindquist brings to life Birger Sandzen, who used bold brush strokes and brilliant colors to express the landscapes he admired and generosity, humor, and diligence to express himself. More than just an artist, Sandzen was a gifted teacher, linguist and translator, musician, and devoted husband and father. He kept in touch with art trends and fellow artists; traveled throughout the United States, Mexico, and Europe; wrote short stories and articles on art; and read widely on social, economic, and international developments. Despite gaining a prosperous international reputation as an artist - his works have appeared in more than 600 exhibitions in the United States and Europe - the European-trained artist chose to live in Lindsborg, Kansas, rather than New York, the heart of the American art world. Although Sandzen and what was then called the modern school were somewhat of an anomaly on the prairie, he did not regret living in the Midwest. Sandzen found his artistic freedom along Kansas rivers, in Colorado mountains, and in southwestern deserts. Where others saw lifeless aridity or uninspiring treeless expanses, he would find "huge boulders or fantastic fortresses and castles". Along a Kansas creek he would envision "perpendicular sandstone walls, high and gay colored palaces, minarets and temple ruins loomed up against the sparkling greenish blue sky". In 1894, 23-year-old Birger Sandzen set sail from his native Sweden for a two- or three-year teaching appointment at Bethany College in Lindsborg. Two years stretched into sixty and resulted ina legacy that left a lasting impression not only on Sandzen's students but on everyone who views his illuminating images.
