Book The Prairie Chicken Its Distribution and Need of Protection Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Prairie Chicken Its Distribution and Need of Protection Classic Reprint written by J. P. Turner and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-11 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Prairie Chicken: Its Distribution and Need of Protection Settlement became more intensive toward the south, and as the number of hunters increased, and the newly-cultivated lands began to appear in the north, the birds became scarcer in the range they had formerly occupied and grew in numbers in the land of their adoption. In a surprisingly short period of time they became very plentiful about the pioneer farms of Manitoba. And in -the Red River Valley, side by side with the sharp-tailed grouse, they became the premier game birds. Now, in the entire area of their range, both old and new, ' the pinnated grouse are scarce as com pared with their former numbers. T hey-are extinct in Ohio and Kentucky, and nowhere are they as plentiful as they formerly were in those States. East of the Mississippi there is practically no good chicken shooting. They are becoming a rarity in Kansas and Nebraska; and only in Minnesota, in the Dakotas, Manitoba, and parts of Saskatchewan, can it be said, and that with no degree of certainty, that the pinnated. Grouse are still plentiful enough to afford a fair day's sport. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book American Game Bird Shooting Classic Reprint

Download or read book American Game Bird Shooting Classic Reprint written by George Bird Grinnell and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-26 with total page 680 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Game-Bird Shooting No Full and complete work on American upland shooting has as yet been written. Volumes have been published, each of which covers some section of what is really a large subject, but from the broader sportsman's viewpoint no one of them is complete. Of these works, the most useful was written by the veteran naturalist and sportsman, D. G. Elliott, whose Game Birds of North America deals chiefly with the natural history side of the grouse and quails, and touches only lightly Oh the methods by which they are pursued for sport. It seems time now that a book should he written, covering the whole subject of upland American game-bird shooting; that is, the shooting of those birds in which the pointing dog is the assistant to the gun - the turkeys, grouse and quail, and the American woodcock and Wilson's snipe, called also "English" and "jack" snipe, a bird of continental distribution. Book Birds of South Dakota Classic Reprint

Download or read book Birds of South Dakota Classic Reprint written by William H. Over and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Birds of South Dakota Effort has been made in this bulletin to obtain as complete a list of South Dakota birds as possible. In all, 322 species and subspecies have been recorded. With few exceptions these are represented in the University Museum collections at Vermillion. There is perhaps no State in the Union where bird study is more perplexing than in South Dakota. From east to west the State embraces birds of woods, prairie and mountains. The range of many birds is constantly moving westward, and this causes variation in the migrating routes of many species. The Black Hills, lying only a little apart from the Rocky Mountains, are apt to be visited occasionally by western species. From south to north, likewise, both trees and latitude affect the bird problem. The Missouri River with its wooded banks and ravines, traversing the middle of the State, provides conditions which attract some species farther north than they would otherwise come. But for this fact we probably would not have the beautiful Western Blue Grosbeak within our borders. Birds from farther east and south also, such as Cardinals and Wood Thrushes, follow the growing trees into South Dakota. Many birds are found in the southern part of the State which are never seen in the northern part; and some birds which formerly nested in South Dakota no longer do so. So numerous, therefore, are the changes going on in bird life within the State that observations which were made a few years ago may not be accurate today and observations made today may not be accurate tomorrow.
