The knowledge thus acquired of the best English practice, as well as of the methods adopted in the construction of economic railways in unexplored and undeveloped countries, has enabled them to deal with the subject from the practical point of view. Many of the methods described are original; some are traditional among Railway Engineers and some are those adopted 'by American Engineers, acquaintance with which is necessary for the more complete study of the subject. Little or none of the matter included under Permanent Way has previously appeared in print, and it is hoped that this will be of much assistance to the young permanent way engineer. The authors are indebted to Mr. W. H. They were enlarged to somewhat their present shape some four or five years ago and used in mimeograph form as a text; the Transition Curve, with one or two additional tables, serving as the field book. Last year they were rewritten and printed, practically as now published, and combined with the Transition Curve into a field book, a limited edition of which was issued. The Transition Curve, thoroughly revised and somewhat enlarged, appears as Chapter II of the complete field book, which is now published for general use. And while an apology is due for adding to the large list of books on this subject already available, it is felt that a book more adapted to the needs of the student without neglecting the requirements of practice would meet a real need. With this in view an effort has been made to bring out practical field methods and to give representative problems, leaving much of the work and most of the special problems to the student. Also as far as practicable all matter not directly connected with railroad surveying has been excluded. This has resulted in a book of convenient size for the pocket, though containing everything necessary for field use. Long field computations requiring logarithms are unnecessary. For office computations, five-place logs are sufficient for all railroad field problems. Those by Gauss and by Hussey are the most convenient of any known to the authors.
