Download or read book The Practice and Principles of Extra corporeal Membrane Oxygenation ECMO written by Michael S. Firstenberg and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "As demonstrated in the first book, the management of patients with profound respiratory failure or cardiogenic shock has evolved significantly over the years with advances in diagnostic and therapeutic options. While the mortality for these often-overlapping problems remains high, progress in the multi-disciplinary approach to these complex clinical problems has improved survival substantially. The focus of this second book is to explore some of the advanced topics and current literature regarding the management of patients requiring extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). As illustrated in the spectrum of topics discussed, ECMO is not only a complex therapy in itself, but the challenges, problems, and complications that arise in this unique area of medicine require engagement by many diverse disciplines. While there are many physiological issues such as organ protection, management of circuit complications, and optimal lung and cardiac protection for recovery, the use of ECMO also introduces a variety of legal and ethical challenges, particularly end-of-life issues (including brain death) in patients for whom recovery, despite extra-corporeal support, is most likely futile. Each of the chapters, written by world-renowned experts in the field, highlights a different important aspect in understanding the complex dynamics of extra-corporeal support and its impact on human pathophysiology. While many of the topics discussed involve sophisticated concepts, each chapter was written with the goal of providing a comprehensive review suitable for any level of training and experience. Many of the topic discussed highlight the state-of-the-art literature along with expert experiences and perspectives as we try to learn more about the overlapping art and science of a field of medicine that has only recently been accepted as a mainstream treatment option. Students of ECMO, ranging from early stage healthcare providers to master physicians, will benefit from the insights presented"--

Book Manual of Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation ECMO in the ICU

Download or read book Manual of Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation ECMO in the ICU written by Poonam Malhotra Kapoor and published by JP Medical Ltd. This book was released on 2013-09-30 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) is a procedure that uses a machine to take over the work of the lungs and sometimes the heart. The system provides heart-lung bypass support using a pump to circulate blood through an artificial lung back into the bloodstream, providing enough oxygen to the patient, whilst allowing time for the lungs and heart to rest or heal during or after serious illness. ECMO is often used for babies, but can also be used for children and adults (Medline Plus). The techniques for ECMO require professionals from multidisciplinary background to be involved in the procedure. This practical manual is a comprehensive guide to ECMO. Divided into eleven sections, the book begins with an introduction to the procedure and equipment. The following sections provide step by step discussion on initiation, maintenance of support and monitoring, and techniques of ECMO for different case scenarios. The final sections present multiple choice questions for self assessment and extensive appendices. Key points Comprehensive guide to Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) Highly relevant for intensivists, anaesthesiologists, surgeons, paediatricians and cardiologists Includes section of multiple choice questions for self assessment More than 186 full colour images and illustrations

Book Extracorporeal Life Support for Adults

Download or read book Extracorporeal Life Support for Adults written by Gregory A Schmidt and published by Humana Press. This book was released on 2015-11-24 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a concise, evidence-based review of extracorporeal life support (ECLS) for adult diseases. It describes the use of ECLS with patients who are experiencing severe hypoxemic respiratory failure (ARDS and pneumonia), ventilatory failure (status asthmaticus and COPD), cardiogenic shock and circulatory or gas exchange failure following complications in cardiothoracic surgery, as well as its use as a bridge to lung transplant. Historically, clinicians have used ECLS as a last resort; however, this text details the technological improvements, evidence of improved outcomes and adverse consequences of alternative treatments that are causing this modality to be more commonly adopted. Topics include a description of the complex physiology and technology underlying ECLS; the evidence base for its use in specific clinical conditions; vascular access techniques; daily management of the circuit and patient; guidance regarding the weaning and decannulation process and recommendations for crisis management and rehabilitation related to ECLS. Extracorporeal Life Support for Adults is ideal reading for practicing physicians, nurses, perfusion specialists, therapists and critical care trainees who are considering whether to refer their patients for ECLS or are already providing ECLS and are seeking a practical reference to best practices and updated information.

Book Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation for Adults

Download or read book Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation for Adults written by Gregory A. Schmidt and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-08-10 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new edition presents an evidence-based review of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) for adults, with a particular focus on veno-venous (VV) ECMO. Due to the dramatic impact of COVID-19, the number of institutions offering ECMO, thus the number of clinicians performing ECMO (or referring their patients for ECMO), has exploded in a truly unprecedented way. While the pandemic may fade, programs built in response will survive by extending the application of ECMO to previously overlooked populations. This fully updated second edition refines its focus to VV ECMO, which has seen the most dramatic increase and relevance. This allows expert authors to go further in depth regarding VV ECMO and provide readers with better guidance from the physiology of VV ECMO to weaning and decannulation. Several areas have been expanded, including anti-thrombotic approaches; how to set the mechanical ventilator and judge the complex interactions between patient, ventilator, and ECMO circuit; assessing the systemic circulation during VV ECMO (especially right ventricular function and intravascular volume); and recognizing membrane lung dysfunction. Finally, new chapters addressing how the VV-capable clinician should think about VA ECMO and how to incorporate ethical principles in patient selection and withdrawal of ECMO have been added. This is an ideal guide for intensive care and respiratory medicine specialists, fellows training in critical care, ECMO specialist staff, perfusionists, nurses, and respiratory therapists.

Book Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation

Download or read book Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation written by Michael S. Firstenberg and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is an innovative therapy that is used to support the physiologic needs of a patient during illnesses associated with acute severe respiratory and/or cardiac failure. ECMO is used in those life-threatening situations in which the oxygenation, ventilation, and circulatory support needs of the patient cannot be adequately maintained with a maximal conventional ventilator or pharmaceutical support. Essentially, ECMO is a simple pump circuit that can be used to support the role of failing lungs or hearts while therapies are aimed at organ recovery. While simple in concept and theory, this text illustrates the complexities associated with clinical use. The use of ECMO has evolved substantially overall the years-in part due to broader and growing applications, a better understanding of the technologies and how they can be used (especially in the context of long term human-ECMO circuit interactions), objective tools for patient selection, management protocols, and, most importantly, a growing body of evidence-based science and literature that demonstrates the effectiveness of this highly invasive, resource-intensive, and complex tool. The goal of this text is to draw from established thought leaders and experts around the world and present a comprehensive review of the rapidly-evolving and expanding literature regarding the spectrum of applications for ECMO. While by no means is this implied to be the final and exhaustive text on this topic, it does aim to be as comprehensive and up-to-date as possible which is, in itself, a challenge given how quickly this field is evolving. This text is aimed at students and providers, at all levels, who might have interest or be involved in the care of these critically ill patients. Chapters focus on how programs can be structured, the specific details of patient selection, management, and expanding roles of ECMO. Both basic and sophisticated concepts are presented with the goal that all may learn. We also present an objective assessment of some of the evolving challenges and limitations to ECMO in the context of the increased utilization and expansion of this therapy, combined with "sicker" patients, and the ongoing journey towards improved outcomes while offering a salvage therapy to patients who might otherwise die"--
