Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an increasingly uncertain world, where the challenges that we all face on a daily basis only seem to be rising, by taking a step back and reframing these challenges as opportunities to learn and grow as people we can grab onto life and experience it to the full. This isn't just a self-help book. It's the story of real life experiences; of unvarnished lived experience that has been joyful, that has hurt, and of how to cope when things don't go to plan. Join Sharon and Matt on this journey as they navigate their mental health as real people with hopes, dreams, struggles and successes just like you. Walk alongside them as they give insight into how they started to acknowledge the negative thought patterns that can stop you from recognising opportunities that are worth the risk and change your life for the better. In truth, each person's journey will be different, and understanding this is the key to finding your own way. This book will help you to view life from a different, more positive perspective. By acknowledging the experiences and opportunities that you may have once overlooked as pivotal life choices for what they are, you too can see firsthand just how easily things can change and improve for you.

Book Realism and International Relations

Download or read book Realism and International Relations written by Patrick James and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-10-28 with total page 649 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Realism is one of the core theories within the field of international relations, and it generally posits a state system characterized by anarchy where states act in what they perceive to be their own self interests. It is a controversial theory, and it has many opponents. Yet effective debate among realists and those who identify with other schools of thought has diminished dramatically over time. As Patrick James argues in Realism and International Relations, scholars in the field have become dissatisfied with results from exchanges in words alone. He contends that translation of the vast amount of information in the field into knowledge requires a greater emphasis on communication beyond the use of text. Given the challenges posed by existing and intensifying information overload, he develops a new model that relies on the graphic representation of analytical arguments. As James explains, realist scholarship in the post-World War II era is the natural domain for the application of systemism, a graphic form of expression with straightforward rules for portrayal of analytical arguments, notably cause and effect within theories. Systemism goes beyond prior iterations of systems theory to offer a visualization technique borrowed and adapted from the philosophy of science. Systemist graphics reveal the shortcomings, contributions and potential of realism. These visualizations, which focus on realist theories about war, are intended to bring order out of what critics tend to describe, with some justification, as chaos. In sum, a graphic turn for realism in particular and international relations in general is essential in order to achieve the scientific progress that otherwise is likely to remain elusive. A major theoretical work by an eminent scholar, this will be of interest to all theorists focusing how the international system of states actually functions.

Download or read book Thinking Through Film written by Damian Cox and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-09-26 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THINKING THROUGH FILM Thinking Through Film provides the best introduction available to the diverse relationships between film and philosophy. Clearly written and persuasively argued, it will benefit students of both film and philosophy. Thomas E. Wartenberg, Mount Holyoke College, author of Thinking on Screen: Film as Philosophy Cox and Levine’s admirable Thinking Through Film picks up where Philosophy Goes to the Movies left off, arguing that films not only do philosophy but, in some cases, do it better than philosophers! The result is a rich and rewarding examination of films – from metaphysical thought experiments, personal identity puzzles, to reflections on the meaning of life – that shows, in bracing, no-nonsense fashion, how popular cinema can do serious philosophy. Robert Sinnerbrink, Macquarie University Thinking Through Film: Doing Philosophy, Watching Movies examines a broad range of philosophical issues though film, as well as issues about the nature of film itself. Using film as a means of philosophizing, it combines the experience of viewing films with the exploration of fundamental philosophical issues. It offers readers the opportunity to learn about philosophy and film together in an engaging way, and raises philosophical questions about films and the experience of films. Film is an extremely valuable way of exploring and discussing topics in philosophy. Readers are introduced to a broad range of philosophical issues though film, as well as to issues about the nature of film itself – a blend missing in most recent books on philosophy and film. Cox and Levine bring a critical eye to philosophical-film discussions throughout.

Book The Power Brain

Download or read book The Power Brain written by Ilchi Lee and published by BEST Life Media. This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our brains are a thousand times more incredible than anything else we will ever encounter. Every great accomplishment human beings have achieved was the work of the brain. In fact, our brains possess infinite potential that allows us to do and be anything. By using this potential well, we become a “Power Brain” that can not only create our personal fate, but that of the entire planet. To develop our brains’ potential, it’s useful to liken the brain to a computer with an operating system. We have a Brain Operating System (BOS) composed of our beliefs and preconceptions that we can change and upgrade until our brains run optimally. Recognizing the potential in our brain beyond what we’ve been able to use so far, Ilchi Lee began investigating brain development principles and methods. He compiled them into a comprehensive self-development system with five steps called Brain Education. Refined over the years by new scientific research and the experiences of those who use it, Brain Education has become an academic discipline that’s presented in a variety of ways, including school educational programs and corporate training. While The Power Brain is primarily about the brain, this book does not focus on the anatomical or neuro-physiological functions of the brain. Rather, it serves as a Brain Operating System user’s manual that describes how to use our brain to discover our value, recreate the story of our lives, and claim a new destiny. Improving our lives, and consequently, our world, through brain development is a skill that anyone can understand, practice, and apply to everyday life.

Book This Thing Called Literature

Download or read book This Thing Called Literature written by Andrew Bennett and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-02-11 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is this thing called literature? Why should we study it? And how? Relating literature to topics such as dreams, politics, life, death, the ordinary and the uncanny, this beautifully written book establishes a sense of why and how literature is an exciting and rewarding subject to study. Bennett and Royle delicately weave an essential love of literature into an account of what literary texts do, how they work and what sort of questions and ideas they provoke. The book’s three parts reflect the fundamental components of studying literature: reading, thinking and writing. The authors use helpful, familiar examples throughout, offering rich reflections on the question ‘What is literature?’ and on what they term ‘creative reading’. Bennett and Royle’s lucid and friendly style encourages a deep engagement with literary texts. This book is not only an essential guide to the study of literature, but an eloquent defence of the discipline.

Book Thinking About Nuclear Weapons

Download or read book Thinking About Nuclear Weapons written by Michael Quinlan and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2009-02-12 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book reflects the author's experience across more than forty years in assessing and forming policy about nuclear weapons, mostly at senior levels close to the centre both of British governmental decision-making and of NATO's development of plans and deployments, with much interaction also with comparable levels of United States activity in the Pentagon and the State department. Part I of the book seeks to distill, from this exceptional background of practical experience, basic conceptual ways of understanding the revolution brought about by nuclear weapons. It also surveys NATO's progressive development of thinking about nuclear deterrence, and then discusses the deep moral dilemmas posed - for all possible standpoints - by the existence of such weapons. Part II considers the risks and costs of nuclear-weapon possession, including proliferation dangers, and looks at both successful and unsuccessful ideas about how to manage them. Part III illustrates specific issues by reviewing the history and current policies of one long-established possessor, the United Kingdom, and two more recent ones, India and Pakistan. Part IV turns to the future, examines the goal of eventually abolishing all nuclear armouries, and then discusses the practical agenda, short of such a goal, which governments can usefully tackle in reducing the risks of proliferation and other dangers while not surrendering prematurely the war-prevention benefits which nuclear weapons have brought since 1945. This book is a project of the Oxford Leverhulme Programme on the Changing Character of War.
