It says the average person can succeed in life with a plan. The book follows my 40+ year business career that culminated in me starting my own business from scratch and building it into a $5-million firm within 12 years and surviving and thriving in the very tough economic times of 2008 and 2009. The book shares the lessons I learned in my 40+ year business career that will help anyone building their career and business. there are many humorous and funny anecdotes that bring the book to life and are entertaining. But, I do speak honestly about some of the negative lessons learned along the way many from people who did not follow my code of honest and ethics. Can we be honest and succeed? Absolutely! I share how we fired our largest clients/customers three years in a row and yet managed year to year growth until 2008. The importance of planning and life-long learning is critical to success. I share what I learned -both good and bad - from some of the mentors and people I worked with that will help readers see that doing what is right, and being honest, is the ONLY policy. I talk about my years as providing public relations services to The Stroh Brewery Company and have a 50 page history entitled: The Rise and Fall of Stroh's beer as a major brand, 1975 - 1999. It is a history of Stroh's beer during those years. I also share some of the major business experiences such as chairing the national effort for drivers in America to wear safety belts while driving. This effort was named by one publication: The most significant change in American attitudes of the 20th century. The book also shares the story of getting the state of Michigan to be a "Smoke Free" state to eliminate smoking in public places. At my company, John Bailey & Associates Public Relations, not once did a woman make less money than a man in the same or similar position. The Power of Ownership is about not just owning a business but owning yourself. You own yourself so go out and make YOU the best you can be. It is up to you but, The Power of Ownership: How to Build a Career and a Business will help.

Both. While power carries some negative connotations, power is a tool that can be used for good or evil. Don’t blame the tool for how some people used it. If fully understood and harnessed effectively, power skills and understanding become the keys to increasing salaries, job satisfaction, career advancement, organizational change, and, happiness. In 7 Rules of Power, Jeffrey Pfeffer, professor of organizational behavior at the Stanford University Graduate School of Business, provides the insights that have made both his online and on-campus classes incredibly popular—with life-changing results often achieved in 8 or 10 weeks. Rooted firmly in social science research, Pfeffer’s 7 rules provide a manual for increasing your ability to get things done, including increasing the positive effects of your job performance. The 7 rules are: 1) Get out of your own way. 2) Break the rules. 3) Show up in powerful fashion. 4) Create a powerful brand. 5) Network relentlessly. 6) Use your power. 7) Understand that once you have acquired power, what you did to get it will be forgiven, forgotten, or both. With 7 Rules of Power, you’ll learn, through both numerous examples as well as research evidence, how to accomplish change in your organization, your life, the lives of others, and the world.

Book Please Sit Over There

Download or read book Please Sit Over There written by Francine Parham and published by Berrett-Koehler Publishers. This book was released on 2022-08-09 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The key to your career advancement is understanding how power works--who has it, where it hides, and how it's used. Please Sit Over There teaches Black women the career skills they need to navigate an uneven playing field and achieve long-lasting professional success. Black women continuously navigate systems that were never intended for them while playing by a set of rules they never agreed to or were ever trained for. In this book, Francine Parham shares her knowledge as a Black woman and a former global executive of two major corporations on how to move up in the workplace while maintaining a sense of sanity. The key skill--one that Black women are rarely taught--is understanding the power dynamics within your organization and learning how to shift the power to your advantage. Parham shows how to use your voice, strategically build the right relationships, and support others once you have achieved a powerful position--tools any woman can use to increase her power and ensure a successful, fulfilling career. Parham says Black women are already empowered; there is no shortage of qualified professional Black women in the talent pipeline. But it does not feel empowering when organizations force Black women to work every day to overcome biases, discriminatory institutional practices, and unwritten rules of power at play that hinder their career development and professional advancement. Please Sit Over There honors the painstaking work being undertaken to deconstruct broken institutions and demonstrates how Black women can achieve their goals while those institutions still exist-effectively opening doors for all women of color.
