Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teachings of Dante One hot summer's morning several years ago, wishing to make more enjoyable a day of leisure, I searched through a friend's library for an interesting book to take into the woods. Most of the volumes, being upon theology and philosophy, appeared too dry and heavy. Finally, I selected Longfellow's translation of Dante's "Inferno," for the three-fold reason that I had little knowledge of the illustrious Italian, the book itself was attractive, and the title seemed to accord with the heat of the day. No sooner, however, had I begun to read than indolence changed to an absorbed attention. The uniqueness of the theme, the vividness of Dante's pictures, the beauty of Longfellow's translation fascinated me. The book became a constant companion during the summer, and when the work of the year began the spell of Dante's great personality was upon me. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dante Life In these years we are living through a period that seems the handiwork of the Spirit of Evil, as if the Almighty had said to Satan, Put forth thine hand, behold all that man hath is within thy power, and we turn to the great spiritual leaders of the world as never before. For many the traditional doctrines of Christianity have lost much, or all, of their power; the comfort that depends upon supernatural virtue has lost its soothing; and the precepts of Stoicism are not enough to give us courage to look upon the world as we see it. We must have some ideal world in our mind's eye, on the creation of which we may labor and sacrifice ourselves. In order to do this we must get Spiritual power where we can; and Dante stands ready to help us. Not only now, but in the years after the war we shall all need spiritual sup port, for history seems to teach that after great wars people turn their minds to material things, to eating, drinking, and being merry, to the acceptance of luxury, ease, and comfort as the goal of man, and shut their eyes to things of the spirit. It is not even mere knowledge. It is the knowledge how to use Knowledge. It is understanding. Get Knowledge, says\ the educator whom we call the wisest of men, but withal get understanding. Dante Alighieri is the expression of under standing. Download or read book Il Convito written by Dante Alighieri and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-21 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dante Alighiere is considered one of the great Italian writers and poets of all time. A philosopher who lived in the thirteenth century, he is most well known for his seminal work La Comedia. While one of his lesser known works, Il Convito: The Banquet of Dante Alighieri remains an important piece of writing from one of the Middle Age's most prominent philosophers. Originally written in the early fourteenth century, this work was never fully completed by Dante. Dante wrote in Italian, the language of the common man, which was highly unusual for writers in the Middle Ages. His book was thus accessible to the masses, and as such was focused on many areas of interest to the commoner. The Banquet is divided into four books which mix poetry and prose. The book opens with Dante's explanation of the need for Il Convito and why he opted to write in the vernacular as opposed to Latin. Books two and three are about the loss of his love Beatrice, and his new love for Lady Philosophy. Book three consists of a lengthy poem praising philosophy, while book four, which makes up the majority of this work, is a discussion of true nobility, and includes the longest hymn to appear in all of Il Convito. The Banquet of Dante Alighieri is truly a wonderful read and the work of a master. Even in its translation to English, the power of Dante's ideas transcends the language used to convey them. This book provides a portrait of the man himself, and is an important contextual piece to Dante's entire body of writing. If one is looking for a companion piece to read alongside La Comedia, Il Convito is perhaps the most illuminating of all Dante's work. As a work of philosophy from one of the great thinkers of the Middle Ages, Il Convito: The Banquet of Dante Alighieri is of tremendous importance. This is a must read for anybody remotely interested in philosophy, and is thus highly recommended. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study of Dante The great world-poets, of whom it is usual to four - including Homer, Shakespeare, and Goethe, besides Dante, - hold their supreme place in popular estimation as much on account of the themes they have treated as on account of the per faction of poetic form which belongs to their great works. They have one and all distinguished their literary work from that of other poets by the pro found insight with which they have treated the prob lem of life in its varied aspects. Their poems may ethical poems on account of the manner in which they have shown the reaction of the social whale against the attacks of Titanic individuals. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spiritual Message of Dante These lectures 'are published according to the conditions laid down by the Noble Trust. They are not intended as a contribution to the critical study of the Divina Commedia they are rather designed to be illustrative of the principles set out in the Noble Lectures which I gave in 1904. They are simply thoughts on religious experience as exemplified in Dante's poem. They were given without manuscript, and as presented here they are compilations from notes, not written lectures. Some repetition is needful in addresses orally given. Such repetitions are blemishes in the printed lectures; but I could not remove such blemishes without recasting the lectures and altering their character as spoken addresses.
