Book The Potash Industry Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Potash Industry Classic Reprint written by German Kali Works and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Potash Industry Thousands of American farmers use potash. Hundreds of thousands of them should use it, both for their own present and future profit and to prevent their posterity from receiving a heritage of "worn out" soils. But ashes - once the most common source of potash - are no longer to be had in quantity. Our forests are now cleared and the ash heap of the pioneer is a thing of the past, while wood as a fuel for factories and railroads has been replaced by coal and oil. Where, then, shall we turn for our needs of potash? Man seldom feels a pressing and continuous need which Nature does not meet - and such has been the case with potash. Within the fifty years which measure alike a rapidly increasing demand for it and the practical disappearance of the old source of supply, there has been found, in one of Nature's storehouses, an inexhaustible accumulation of potash. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Potash is the term generally given to potassium chloride, but it is also loosely applied to the various potassium compounds used in agriculture: po tassium sulfate, potassium nitrate or double salts of potassium and magne sium sulfate (generally langbeinite, K S0 • 2MgS0 ). Sometimes the var 2 4 4 ious compounds are differentiated by the terms muriate of potash, sulfate of potash, etc. When referring to ores, or in geology, all of the naturally found potassium salts are called "potash ores". However, originally potash referred only to crude potassium carbonate, since its sole source was the leaching of wood ashes in large pots. This "pot ash" product was generally recovered from near-seacoast plants, such as the saltwort bush, whose ashes were richer in potassium than sodium carbonate. Inland plant's ashes were generally higher in sodium carbonate, giving rise to the word alkali from the Arabic word for soda ash, al kali. The term was then carried over after potassium was discovered to form the latin word for it, kalium. The recovery of potash from ashes became a thriving small cottage industry throughout the world's coastal areas, and developing economies, such as the early set tlers in the United States were able to generate some much-needed income from its recovery and sale. This industry rapidly phased out with the advent of the LeBanc process for producing soda ash in 1792, and the discovery about the same time of the massive sodium-potassium nitrate deposits in the Atacama Desert of Chile.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Potash: A Review, Estimate and Forecast The ambition and determination to render America independent Of foreign countries in respect to her potash supplies resulted immediately upon the realization Of that dependence. It required the hard-fisted methods Of the former German monarchy as applied to American importers Of German potash to bring home to us the absoluteness Of our dependence on Germany for all Of our potash. There being no other foreign source to which to turn, the natural reaction was that we should take stock Of our own raw mate rials to see if therefrom it was not possible to develop a domestic potash industry. This resolve found point in 1910 when the Government's surveys of American raw materials for potash manufacture were inaugurated. Compounds Of potash for the most part being soluble, this material was looked for among the natural brines and the products Of the desiccation of brines. Thorough sur veys were accordingly made Of salt deposits, brines from salt and Oil wells, saline lakes and salt crusts and deposits Of salines from desiccated desert lakes. Potash minerals were located and explored. The great, potash-bearing seaweeds Of the Pacific were surveyed and their quantity determined. Industrial wastes were examined and measured.
