We can see its manifestations on billboards and on television; we can hear its tone on the radio and in everyday conversation; and we can even sense its outlook in how we live our lives. This volume presents an accessible and brief summary of postmodernism, especially as it pertains to American cinema-one of the central players and leading lights in the development of this cultural attitude. Four distinct sections investigate postmodernist fragmentation, musical use, and pastiches of previous television shows and cinematic genres in such films as Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction, David Lynch's Mulholland Drive, and Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette. Discussions of the phenomenon of postmodernism have established certain characteristics that are typical of postmodernist culture. These characteristics include formal fragmentation, a tendency toward a particular kind of nostalgia, and the use of materials and styles borrowed from previous films and other cultural products. This volume presents a brief summary of the characteristics that have typically been associated with postmodernism, especially as they pertain to film. It illustrates those characteristics with discussions of a wide variety of American films of the past thirty years, noting how those films participate in the phenomenon of postmodernism. Emphasis is on popular, commercial films, rather than the more esoteric, experimental products that have sometimes been associated with postmodern film. Booker's work contains detailed discussions of a wide variety of American films—including classics like Sullivan's Travels and The Last Picture Show, and recent successes such as Scream, Natural Born Killers, Memento, Moulin Rouge, and Fight Club—noting how these films participate in the phenomenon of postmodernism, and how they have helped to shape its current form.

Book excerpt: This thesis examines the representation of postmodern subjectivity in what Geoff King calls the "indie/alternative" Indiewood film (Indiewood 38), through a close examination of some particular examples. In the late twentieth century, Hollywood cinema made a series of excursions into postmodernism and its effects on subjectivity. Scholarship on Hollywood's ventures into this territory has, historically, focused on the representation of the cyborg in the science fiction films of the 1980s and 1990s and the destabilisation of the "human" that this figure engenders. This thesis argues that, in the late 1990s and early 2000s, some indie/alternative Indiewood films exhibited a similar tendency to explore postmodern subjectivity through experimenting with the representational conventions of the classical Hollywood cinema and the model of subjectivity this has historically supported. This thesis offers close readings of formal/aesthetic strategies in six indie/alternative Indiewood films: American Psycho (Mary Harron, 2000), Being John Malkovich (Spike Jonze, 1999), Memento (Christopher Nolan, 2000), Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (Michel Gondry, 2004), American Splendor (Robert Pulcini and Shari Springer Berman, 2003), and Adaptation (Spike Jonze, 2002). I contend that these films not only thematically explore the effects of the postmodern on subjectivity, they also use representational strategies that appear to break with the classical Hollywood cinema's emphasis on coherence, continuity and verisimilitude, conventions that sustain a model of subjectivity inherited from the Enlightenment. By privileging depthlessness, fragmentation and simulation, the indie/alternative Indiewood films addressed in this thesis appear to construct their characters as postmodern subjects. It is my argument, however, that the films struggle, in different ways and to varying degrees, to exceed the classical conventions for representing character and subjectivity. I further contend that the limits I have identified in this group of indie/alternative Indiewood films do not represent the boundaries of what the cinematic medium, or even American popular narrative cinema, can represent. Through a detailed examination of Lost Highway, Mulholland Drive and Inland Empire (David Lynch, 1997, 2001 and 2006), I show that it is possible for American popular narrative cinema to mobilise representational strategies that more fully support a postmodern model of subjectivity. This thesis argues, then, that American popular narrative cinema is capable of exceeding the conventions that support the Enlightenment model. This prompts questions about the persistence of this model in the versions of this cinema produced in Hollywood. The broader concern of this thesis lies not with the postmodern but with the imperative to critique the representational conventions of Hollywood cinema, and to question the model of subjectivity - be it Enlightenment, postmodern or otherwise - that it supports.

Specifically, the present essays throw light on the status of modernist writing, drama in English, or popular genres within the new canonical topography elaborated at the turn of the twenty-first century.

In cinema in particular, some of the arts most fundamental aspects—stories, characters, and genres, for instance—assumed such a trite and trivialized appearance that only rarely could they take their places on the screen without provoking an inward smirk or a wink from the audience. Out of this highly self-conscious and world-weary environment, however, a new group of filmmakers began to develop as the decade wore on, with a new set of styles and sensibilities to match. In Post-Pop Cinema author Jesse Fox Mayshark takes us on a film-by-film tour of the works of these filmmakers-including Wes and P. T. Anderson, Sofia Coppola, Richard Linklater, Alexander Payne, and David O. Russell-and seeks to reveal how a common pool of styles, collaborators, and personal connections helps them to confront the unifying problem of meaning in American film. Wes Anderson's Bottle Rocket (1996) and Paul Thomas Anderson's Boogie Nights (1997) were ultimately about their characters' lives-even though their characters often dealt with highly contrived environments and situations. And soon after Wes Anderson scored his first success, others like David O. Russell (Flirting With Disaster, Three Kings), the screenwriter Charlie Kaufman (who collaborated with Spike Jonze on such projects as Being John Malkovich and Adaptation), Alexander Payne (Election, Sideways), Richard Kelly (Donnie Darko), and Sofia Coppola (Lost in Translation) began to tread their own paths over this same ground. Although these men and women represent a wide range of styles and subject matter, all their films revolve in different ways around the difficulty of establishing and maintaining connections. This theme of connection also runs deeper than the films made: the directors share actors (Mark Wahlberg, Bill Murray, Ben Stiller, Jason Schwartzman), collaborators (the musician Jon Brion) and sometimes even personal connections (Spike Jonze starred in Russell's Three Kings, and was married to Coppola). Together these filmmakers form a loose and distinctly American school of filmmaking, one informed by postmodernism but not in thrall to it, and one that every year becomes more important to the world of cinema both within and beyond the United States.
