Book excerpt: - Features works from the largest collection of Jules Chéret art in the US - Over 100 posters illustrated in full colorAlways New: The Posters of Jules Chéret highlights ?the role that French artist Jules Chéret (1836-1932) ?played in transforming the ?illustrated poster into a form of ephemeral art that embraced the public's interest in novelty and rapid change during the 19th century. Recognized as the father of the poster, Chéret was ?one of the first artist's to bring colorful, large-scale advertisements to the streets of Paris. ?People strolling down the boulevards were captivated not only by Chéret's vibrant images, but also by how frequently new designs appeared. Chéret's printmaking innovations allowed him to produce astonishing numbers of posters rapidly and inexpensively enough to publicize the latest pleasures the city had to offer. Drawing from the largest collection of Chéret posters in the ?United States, the book features ?over 100 works that span the artist's career and includes both his most celebrated and lesser-known images. Always New brings Chéret into focus as a master of his medium, an artist who celebrated the ephemeral nature of posters and shaped the way they were created and experienced.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The French poster, born of a basic utilitarian purpose, has developed with age into an admired and collected art form. Vintage posters command high prices at auction and curators specialize in their restoration. The earliest art-worthy posters appeared on the streets of Paris designed by French-born artists such as Jules ChŽret, who popularized poster art with his Ma”tres de lÕAffiche publication from 1895 to 1899, Paul ƒmile Berthon, and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. Other poster artists just as well known but hailing from other countries include Eugne Grasset from Switzerland, Alphonse Mucha from what is now the Czech Republic, and Marcello Dudovich from Italy. The Art Nouveau and Art Deco posters created before and after the turn of the 20th century advertised everything from soap to chocolate, bicycles to cars, coffee to cordials, department stores to nightclubs. They promoted the performing artists in the revues, theaters, and cancan lines that dominated nightlife in the City of Light. Travel, another common poster theme, featured modern ocean liners and airlines as well as terribly exotic destinations and European resorts. This book includes examples of the works of the most popular poster artists working in France from 1890 to the 1930s.

Book The European Poster 1888 1938

Download or read book The European Poster 1888 1938 written by and published by Fundacion Museo Picasso Malaga. This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The modern poster dates back to around 1870, when color lithography had been sufficiently perfected to permit mass production. Artists such as Toulouse-Lautrec and Jules Chret were quick to perceive and embrace the possibilities of the poster as a form, as means of disseminating their work and as a source of income. New movements in late nineteenth-century art, such as Art Nouveau and Symbolism, also adapted their respective styles to commercial demands, and their graphic power was such that major poster surveys were held as early as 1884. Among the genre's earliest innovators, Chret is considered to have been especially influential commercially, for having first used seductive depictions of women as an advertising ploy. Later on, in the early days of the Soviet avant-garde, artists like Rodchenko and Klutsis were also to apply their graphic know-how to the poster form, in the service of a new communist Russia and its booming industries. This magnificent boxed volume reproduces 175 posters from the last decades of the nineteenth century to the early twentieth century, loose-leaf and in full color. The works have been gathered by expert Carlos Prez from European museums and renowned international private collections. Among the 90-plus artists included here are Chret, Ramn Casas, Toulouse-Lautrec, Pierre Bonnard, Alfons Mucha, Henri Matisse, Cassandre, Paul Colin, Jean Carlu, Giacomo Balla, Herbert Bayer, Otto Baumberger, John Heartfield, Vladimir Lebedev, Alexander Rodchenko, Man Ray, Kurt Schwitters, Oskar Schlemmer, Gustav Klutsis, Robert Breny and Fortunato Depero. An accompanying paperback book, housed within the box, provides an historical overview.

Book excerpt: This book offers a beautiful exploration of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec's works in lithography. It explores the new artistic approach to the poster at the end of the 19th century, which bridged visual and popular culture and turned the relationship between 'high' and 'low' art on its head. Technical innovations in lithography pioneered by Lautrec and other artists produced larger sizes, more varied colours and new effects and launched the role of the poster as a powerful tool for communication and marketing in fin de siecle Paris. Lautrec's embrace of celebrity helped to define the famous hotspots (theatres, cabarets and cafe-concerts) of fin de siecle Paris and made their stars recognisable figures across the whole city. Works by contemporaries such as Pierre Bonnard, Theophile Alexandre Steinlen and Jules Cheret also feature, and Lautrec's influence on British, and particularly Scottish, artists of the period will be explored. These include Walter Richard Sickert, Arthur Melville, John Duncan Fergusson, William Nicholson and James Pryde. Exhibition: Scottish National Gallery, Edinburgh, UK (06.10.2018 - 20.01.2019).
