Vintage posters command high prices at auction and curators specialize in their restoration. The earliest art-worthy posters appeared on the streets of Paris designed by French-born artists such as Jules Chret, who popularized poster art with his Matres de lÕAffiche publication from 1895 to 1899, Paul mile Berthon, and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. Other poster artists just as well known but hailing from other countries include Eugne Grasset from Switzerland, Alphonse Mucha from what is now the Czech Republic, and Marcello Dudovich from Italy. The Art Nouveau and Art Deco posters created before and after the turn of the 20th century advertised everything from soap to chocolate, bicycles to cars, coffee to cordials, department stores to nightclubs. They promoted the performing artists in the revues, theaters, and cancan lines that dominated nightlife in the City of Light. Travel, another common poster theme, featured modern ocean liners and airlines as well as terribly exotic destinations and European resorts. This book includes examples of the works of the most popular poster artists working in France from 1890 to the 1930s.

Artists such as Toulouse-Lautrec and Jules Ch�ret were quick to perceive and embrace the possibilities of the poster as a form, as means of disseminating their work and as a source of income. New movements in late nineteenth-century art, such as Art Nouveau and Symbolism, also adapted their respective styles to commercial demands, and their graphic power was such that major poster surveys were held as early as 1884. Among the genre's earliest innovators, Ch�ret is considered to have been especially influential commercially, for having first used seductive depictions of women as an advertising ploy. Later on, in the early days of the Soviet avant-garde, artists like Rodchenko and Klutsis were also to apply their graphic know-how to the poster form, in the service of a new communist Russia and its booming industries. This magnificent boxed volume reproduces 175 posters from the last decades of the nineteenth century to the early twentieth century, loose-leaf and in full color. The works have been gathered by expert Carlos P�rez from European museums and renowned international private collections. Among the 90-plus artists included here are Ch�ret, Ram�n Casas, Toulouse-Lautrec, Pierre Bonnard, Alfons Mucha, Henri Matisse, Cassandre, Paul Colin, Jean Carlu, Giacomo Balla, Herbert Bayer, Otto Baumberger, John Heartfield, Vladimir Lebedev, Alexander Rodchenko, Man Ray, Kurt Schwitters, Oskar Schlemmer, Gustav Klutsis, Robert B�reny and Fortunato Depero. Technical innovations in lithography pioneered by Lautrec and other artists produced larger sizes, more varied colours and new effects and launched the role of the poster as a powerful tool for communication and marketing in fin de siecle Paris. Lautrec's embrace of celebrity helped to define the famous hotspots (theatres, cabarets and cafe-concerts) of fin de siecle Paris and made their stars recognisable figures across the whole city. Works by contemporaries such as Pierre Bonnard, Theophile Alexandre Steinlen and Jules Cheret also feature, and Lautrec's influence on British, and particularly Scottish, artists of the period will be explored.
