Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Portrait of a Pious Bishop: Or, the Life and Death of the Most Reverend Francis Kirwan, Bishop of Killala Very Rev. Sir - I dedicate to you the translation of a work which for a long time has been inaccessible to the generality of readers. I need not expend many words on the merits of the eminent author whose text is now republished after the lapse of more than a century and a half; nor is it necessary to call public attention to his interesting memoir. It is quite enough to state, that the pious Prelate, whose portrait has been painted by Archdeacon Lynch, lived at a period when the Catholics of this country made a gallant, though ineffectual struggle for nationality, and witnessed the horrors which Cromwell's unsparing sword inflicted on their altars, liberties, and homesteads. Nor is it required that I should enter into a narrative of Archdeacon Lynch's life. The Light of the West, the venerable Hardiman, to whom I am under lasting obligations, has set forth all that could be collected regarding Gratianus Lucius; while Mr. M'Ghee, in the "Gallery of Irish Writers," has given us such an interesting relation as renders further biographical notices unnecessary. In fact, it is Ratifying to reflect that owing to the diffusion of our Irish literature, very few with any pretension to learning can be found ignorant of the life and works of such an eminent ornament to his religion and country as was the man who triumphantly confuted Sylvester Giraldus. Book The Reconstruction of the Church of Ireland

Download or read book The Reconstruction of the Church of Ireland written by John McCafferty and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-07-26 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Wentworth landed in Ireland in 1633 - almost 100 years after Henry VIII had begun his break with Rome. The majority of the people were still Catholic. William Laud had just been elevated to Canterbury. A Yorkshire cleric, John Bramhall, followed the new viceroy and became, in less than one year, Bishop of Derry. This 2007 study, which is centred on Bramhall, examines how these three men embarked on a policy for the established Church which represented not only a break with a century of reforming tradition but which also sought to make the tiny Irish Church a model for the other Stuart kingdoms. Dr McCafferty shows how accompanying canonical changes were explicitly implemented for notice and eventual adoption in England and Scotland. However within eight years the experiment was blown apart and reconstruction denounced as subversive. Wentworth, Laud and Bramhall faced consequent disgrace, trial, death or exile.

Book The Oxford Handbook of the Bible in Early Modern England c 1530 1700

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of the Bible in Early Modern England c 1530 1700 written by Kevin Killeen and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2015-08-27 with total page 951 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bible was, by any measure, the most important book in early modern England. It preoccupied the scholarship of the era, and suffused the idioms of literature and speech. Political ideas rode on its interpretation and deployed its terms. It was intricately related to the project of natural philosophy. And it was central to daily life at all levels of society from parliamentarian to preacher, from the 'boy that driveth the plough', famously invoked by Tyndale, to women across the social scale. It circulated in texts ranging from elaborate folios to cheap catechisms; it was mediated in numerous forms, as pictures, songs, and embroideries, and as proverbs, commonplaces, and quotations. Bringing together leading scholars from a range of fields, The Oxford Handbook of the Bible in Early Modern England, 1530-1700 explores how the scriptures served as a generative motor for ideas, and a resource for creative and political thought, as well as for domestic and devotional life. Sections tackle the knotty issues of translation, the rich range of early modern biblical scholarship, Bible dissemination and circulation, the changing political uses of the Bible, literary appropriations and responses, and the reception of the text across a range of contexts and media. Where existing scholarship focuses, typically, on Tyndale and the King James Bible of 1611, The Oxford Handbook of the Bible in England, 1530-1700 goes further, tracing the vibrant and shifting landscape of biblical culture in the two centuries following the Reformation.

He considers negotiations between the Irish and English parliaments, how events in Ireland influenced public opinion in both England and Scotland, the delay in sending the Irish army against the Scots, how the Irish rising contributed to the outbreak of the English Civil War, and other factors. Book Sacred Journeys in the Counter Reformation

Download or read book Sacred Journeys in the Counter Reformation written by Elizabeth C. Tingle and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-06-08 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sacred Journeys in the Counter-Reformation examines long-distance pilgrimages to ancient, international shrines in northwestern Europe in the two centuries after Luther. In this region in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, saints’ cults and pilgrimage were frequently contested, more so than in the Mediterranean world. France, the Low Countries and the British Isles were places of disputation and hostility between Protestant and Catholic; sacred landscapes and journeys came under attack and in some regions, were outlawed by the state. Taking as case studies hugely popular medieval shrines such as Compostela, the Mont Saint-Michel and Lough Derg, the impact of Protestant criticism and Catholic revival on shrines, pilgrims’ motives and experiences is examined through life writings, devotional works and institutional records. The central focus is that of agency in religious change: what drove spiritual reform and what were its consequences for the ‘ordinary’ Catholic? This is explored through concepts of the religious self, holy materiality, and sacred space.
