Book The Portland Sketch Book Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Portland Sketch Book Classic Reprint written by Ann S. Stephens and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Portland Sketch Book The object of the Portland Sketch-Book, is to collect in a small compass, literary specimens from such authors as have a just claim to be styled Portland writers. The list might have been extended to a much greater length, had all been included who have made our city a place of transient residence; but no writer has a place in this volume who is not, or has not been, a citizen of Portland, either by birth or a long residence. Therefore, all the names contained in these pages are emphatically those of Portland authors. Among those who were actually born here and either wholly, or in part educated here, will be found the following names, most of which are already known to the world of literature. S. B. Beckett - James Brooks - William Cutter - Charles S. Daveis - Nathaniel Deering - P. H. Greenleaf - Charles P. Ilsley - Joseph Ingraham - Geo. W. Light - Henry W. Longfellow - Grenville Mellen - Frederick Mellen - Isaac McLellan, Jr. - John Neal - Elizabeth Smith - William Willis - N. P. Willis. Book History of Portland Oregon

Download or read book History of Portland Oregon written by Harvey Whitefield Scott and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-28 with total page 930 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Portland, Oregon: With Illustrations and Biographical Sketches of Prominent Citizens and Pioneers Hitherto there has been no attempt to write a History of Portland. Slight sketches of the history of the city have, indeed, been written, but nothing that answers to the importance of the subject has here tofore been undertaken. For conception and execution of the present work the city is indebted to D. Mason Co., a firm of enter prising publishers of Syracuse, New York. Learning that no general history of Portland had yet appeared, these publishers offered to undertake the work and to collect the materials for it. Aware, how ever, that it was necessary that these materials should be subjected to local editorial supervision, they requested me to perform that duty. Though my own daily employments were very exacting, I consented to do so. The result is now submitted to the public. My own work therefore has been that of editor rather than author. Some parts of the book I have written, and all of it, except portions of the biographical matter, I have revised with as much diligence as possible. Yet I cannot hope that the book is free from errors. Much has been handed down from memory, and inaccuracies therefore are unavoidable. Acknowledgments are due chiefly to O. F. Vedder, H. S. Lyman and C. H. Carey for the matter of this volume. All these have worked diligently in collection and preparation of the materials. The bio graphical matter has been contributed by many hands, and Mr. Vedder has bestowed much labor upon it. The special work of Mr. Carey is the important and. Exhaustive chapter on Bench and Bar. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Circuit Rider's Sketch Book Dear Brother John Kilgo: It has been a decade and two years since you have met with your brethren in this State as a member of the South Carolina Conference. Many then who did delight to meet and greet you have gone from us, and have been transferred forever. It might afford you a melancholy pleasure to have the long sad roll recalled, and have brought to mind the lofty characters and noble bearings of the fallen braves who it seems but yesterday talked and walked among us. But such is life. We are here to act our parts on the world's stage of action in the drama of life with its sunshine and shadows for a while, then the final act is played, and the closing scene - and we make exit forever. Let us hastily review the list and call the roll of those who were hearty and happy just twelve years ago, but upon whose graves today the autumn leaves are silently falling. First, R. N. Wells, who died in his prime. How easily his face and suavity of manner can be recalled. Franks, Seale, Laird, Pritchard, Jno. A. Mood - all elderly men who died in the faith.
