Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Portland Cement Industry From a Financial Standpoint In spite of the present and growing importance of industry, the history of Portland Cement manufacture covers a relatively short period of time, as compared with that of the iron industry, for example. Contrary to a somewhat popular idea, the ancients do not seem to have been acquainted with cements of the type which are now so widely employed. The "cements" used by the Romans, for example, were not burned products similar to the Portland Cement now used, but were made by mixing slaked lime with a powdered volcanic ash, called pozzuolana. These pozzuolanic or "puzzolan" cements still survive, though not of the greatest industrial importance. During the Middle Ages even the use of the puzzolan cements seems to have been discontinued for large structural work. In those periods the material used for holding masonry together was a plain lime mortar, though by using time and great care in the preparation of the lime, the mortar and the masonry, structures of great strength and durability were finally developed. Download or read book History of the Portland Cement Industry in the United States written by Robert Whitman Lesley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-27 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Portland Cement Industry in the United States: With Appendices Covering Progress of the Industry by Years and an Outline of the Organization and Activities of the Portland Cement Association What you are, speaks so loudly that people oftentimes do not hear what you say. The Cement Industry of the United States has established for itself a position of such permanence and importance in America's indus trial life, that neither arguments nor eulogies are needed to gain public recognition and appreciation for this great business. We may search the whole field of material virtues and yet find nothing that so commands our respect as does permanence. It is not the beauty of the Pyramids that holds the traveler in Egypt charmed, but it is the appeal their rugged endurance makes to his imagination. They appear to be something that connects today with yesterday - the present with the past - and while they may represent no more than a foolish waste of human effort, they have the power to go on and on, unyielding even to the ceaseless attacks of the wearing elements and the sands of the desert. Cement means concrete; concrete means stone; and stone spells eternity, so far as our finite minds can comprehend. The development of methods to manufacture great quantities of synthetic stone has given our present civilization the durability it so much needed. The creation of a great Cement Industry has removed, in large degree, the serious menace to life of a coming timber famine. The rapid progress of science and engineer ing in our country has been made possible by our cement mills, which have given us the essential material on which to found our prosperity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Portland Cement Industry: A Practical Treatise on the Building, Equipping, and Economical Running of a Portland Cement Plant; With Notes on Physical Testing After this terrible War is over, in which we are fighting for the highest conception of humanity, "Right against Might," and our efforts, combined with those of our gallant Allies, have been crowned with success, the industrial war with our trade competitors will dominate and express our national needs. We shall assuredly suffer crushing commercial defeat if advantage is not taken by British manufacturers to study, adopt, and improve methods of economical production which our rivals have long practised. Neglect, delay, or failure in the attempt will lose to Great Britain the markets of the world for Portland Cement. It is imperative that we should view with detachment the methods of our fathers if we are to be free to rise to the heights of modern practices, and to strive for the mastery in the perfection and dominion of our products. Let us not sit in our office chairs bemoaning our fate and consenting to our trade passing to other countries, but let us get busy in our industrial departments, and to order add progress. For the cement manufacturer the immediate future has immense potentialities. Much time and pains have been given to ensure accuracy in this treatise, to divest it of scientific technicalities, and to present! a clear, simple, and realistic description of the actual and economical manufacture of a building material which is of fundamental and supreme importance. I acknowledge indebtedness to the Council of the South Wales Institute of Engineers for permission to include from their Proceedings, vol. xxxi, No. 4, my "Notes on the subject of Testing Portland Cement;" to Mr. H. R. Cox, M. C. I., for kindred matter; and to Mr. J. A. Towers for data on Power Plants. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Portland Cement Classic Reprint

Download or read book Portland Cement Classic Reprint written by A. C. Davis and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-02-03 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Portland Cement The present period of the German invasion of our cement market 15 an ominous one for British cement manufacturers. A Portland cement is being put upon our market which in quality equals, if not excels, in some instances, the average product shipped from many of our best known works. The price of the foreign cement is one the English manufacturer IS reluctant, if able, to sell at; and large contracts in this country are being secured by our foreign rivals. The history of the manufacture of Portland cement may be put into a very short space as regards the present inferior position of the average English works. Portland cement was first invented in this country about 1756; Some years later our Continental neighbours started cement manufacture on sound scientific principles. Since this time our foreign rivals have been forging ahead. They have been successful in solving problems of vital importance in the more modern manufacture of a first-class quality product, and at prices which enable them to ship cement, not only to this country but to the very centres of the export and colonial trade which English manufacturers once thoroughly relied upon as their own market. Download or read book Oil Mixed Portland Cement Concrete Classic Reprint written by Logan Waller Page and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oil-Mixed Portland Cement Concrete The enormous growth of the American Portland cement industry, with. Its production Of 7 barrels Of cement in 1910 and 7 1 barrels in 1911, is striking evidence Of the widespread use Of this deservedly popular material of construction. Combined with sand and stone or gravel in the correct proportions and mixed with the proper amount of water, the resultant product - concrete - is a structural material of perhaps more universal adaptation than any other material now in use. Its application to foundations for heavy machinery, to dams, walls, bridge piers, tunnels, subways, and build ing blocks is well known. When properly reinforced with steel, its use is even more widely extended to the construction Of bridges, vats, sewers, water conduits, and numerous other classes of construction. The farmer has found concrete to be Of material benefit to him in building various farm structures which were formerly made Of more perishable materials._ Thus, when reinforced with steel wire or rods, fence posts may be made with an interminable life and at very low. Cost. It is also exceedingly well adapted to the construction Of water tanks, cisterns, silos, pavements, floors, buildings, feeding troughs, etc. Simplicity and ease of manufacture and manipulation in construction great strength and durability, and comparatively low cost are some of the considerations which render its application so universal. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Souvenir of the History, Development and Future of Portland Cement Smeaton was a celebrated English engineer, who discovered that a certain limestone con taining a percentage of clay produced. Ca dicing calcined, a cement which he termed Improved Hydraulic Lime. Zealous in his purpose Smeaton risked his reputation as an' engineer, and showed his faith in his material by building with it the fauusnr Eddystone Lighthouse, the founda tions of which stand to-day as a monument not only to the excellence of his cement, but to his ability and courage as an engineer. Tire work was completed in 1759, and has withstood the fiercest storms for a century and a half unharmed to the present time. It was with this discovery that the real hiaton of modem cement manufacture commenced. A third of a _century later a Mr Parker, of Loaduri, patented a process for manufacturing Roman cement that produced a product about the grade of the present American natural cements Several other patents were taken out previous to 1813, when a French professor at Paris discovered the fundamental chemical action in the manufacture of Portland cement, namely, that In the bu.ning the silica of the clay unites with the lime and produces a product with hydraulic pro pertica. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Practical Treatise on the Manufacture of Portland Cement In the somewhat censorious remarks, which Mr. Lipowitz considers it necessary to make regarding English Cement and its manufacturers, I will simply observe that a fair share of his reproof, in my opinion, should be borne by his countrymen; when excessive rivalry exists amongst merchants in supplying an imported article, like Cement, the tricks and evasions practised can only be successfully encountered by the vigilance of the consumer. Were rigid tests universally applied, adulterated or inferior Cement would cease to be made. N o manufacturer would be found to risk the production of an article that could not find a market.
