Book excerpt: Anthropologists have been appearing as key expert witnesses in native title claims for over 20 years. Until now, however, there has been no theoretically-informed, detailed investigation of how the expert testimony of anthropologists is formed and how it is received by judges. This book examines the structure and habitus of both the field of anthropology and the juridical field and how they have interacted in four cases, including the original hearing in the Mabo case. The analysis of background material has been supplemented by interviews with the key protagonists in each case. This allows the reader a unique, insider's perspective of the courtroom drama that unfolds in each case. The book asks, given the available ethnographic research, how will the anthropologist reconstruct it in a way that is relevant to the legal doctrine of native title when that doctrine gives a wide leeway for interpretation on the critical questions.

He could never shake the shadow of his background and was dogged by ignominious rumours. From 1849 to 1860 Smith and his family occupied 300 Queen Street, Melbourne, one of the first true residential townhouses in the city. Flashy, Fun and Functional: How Things Helped to Invent Melbourne’s Gold Rush Mayor explores the things they left behind. Excavations at the site in 1982 by Judy Birmingham and Associates uncovered a rich and important archaeological record of the Smiths’ lives in the form of a cesspit rubbish deposit. The recovered artefacts can be used to examine the distinctive way the Smith family used material culture to negotiate their position in colonial society. Popular decoration styles and expensive materials suggest the family’s efforts to secure their newly obtained social status. The artefacts evoke the turmoil, volatility and opportunity of life in the first decades of the colony of Port Phillip. They provide an example of the possibility of social mobility in the colony, but also of the challenges of navigating the customs of a newly forming society.

After the Royal Navy’s bloody high seas campaign to kill the mighty Bismarck, the Allies were left with an uncomfortable truth—the German behemoth had a twin sister. Slightly larger than her sibling, the Tirpitz was equally capable of destroying any other battleship afloat, as well as wreaking havoc on Allied troop and supply convoys. For the next three and a half years, the Allies launched a variety of attacks to remove Germany’s last serious surface threat, hidden within fjords along the Norwegian coast. Trying an indirect approach, the British launched one of the war’s most daring commando raids—at St. Nazaire—in order to knock out the last drydock in Europe capable of servicing the Tirpitz. He spent many years in Australia as a fisheries expert, and during this time he made extensive surveys of the natural world. The present work, first published in 1897, was intended to give a non-scientific audience a glimpse of the fantastic array of wildlife in Australia. The author discusses the many varieties of birds, lizards, fish and other sea life, insects (an entire chapter is devoted to termites), and vegetation. He was also able to take advantage of the photographic technology of the time and include around fifty collotype images, which complement the many other illustrations of the plants and animals he writes about, providing a vivid overview of the natural world in late nineteenth-century Australia.

Book excerpt: This is the story of Caleb Hoskins a first generation Australian born in Walkerville, South Australia in 1849. He was the sixth child born to Andrew and Ann Hoskins, who raised eleven children in the early years of the South Australian colonisation. This story is a biography of known facts, deduced from wide ranging research, woven through a fictional tale. Caleb spent his childhood in Prospect village, living in a tent and using the River Torrens as his playground with his younger brother Jim. The Hoskins brothers, Fred, George, Caleb and Jim together with Bill Walkington carted copper via bullock drays from the Kooringa (Burra) mines, Yudanamutana mine and the Blinman and Sliding Rock mines to Gawler/Kapunda and Port Augusta respectively, and partnered with John McDonald to provide horse and coach passenger transport and mail delivery in the northern districts of South Australia during the 1860s and early 1870s. Three of the Hoskins Brothers, Fred, Caleb and Jim, together with Bill Walkington made three trips into the Outback by bullock drays, carting telegraph equipment and rations for the Overland Telegraph Line construction, during 1870 to 1872. Their three trips took them from Port Augusta to Charlotte Waters, the Goyder River and Alice Springs. On one occasion they were accosted by aborigines and Calebs slight knowledge of their language saved the day when he realised that all they wanted was access to the water that they carried on their drays. Caleb Hoskins also participated in the Ruby Rush into the East MacDonnell Ranges in the Northern Territory in 1887, which proved to be a falsehood once the gemstones were identified as worthless garnets. Caleb then found work on the construction of the old Ghan line, from 1888 to 1890 during one of many economic depressions that affected the colony. In 1891 the Great Northern Railway line was opened for business from Port Augusta to Oodnadatta and Caleb secured a position as a packer and worked at many railway stations along the track from 1891 until 1914. Caleb Hoskins passed away at Quorn, South Australia on Thursday 29 July 1926 aged 77 years. Later that same day, on being informed that his brother had passed away, James Hoskins dropped dead aged 72 years. Caleb and Jim are both honoured with Unsung Heroes of the Outback plaques in the Australian Stockmans Hall of Fame at Longreach, Queensland for their efforts in the Overland Telegraph Line construction.

Book excerpt: The area claimed by the British Empire as Western Australia was primarily colonized through two major thrusts: the development of the Swan River Colony to the southwest in 1829, and the 1863 movement of Australian born settlers to colonize the northwest region. The Western Australian story is overwhelmingly the story of the spread of market capitalism, a narrative which is at the foundation of modern western world economy and culture. Due to the timing of settlement in Western Australia there was a lack of older infrastructure patterns based on industrial capitalism to evoke geographical inertia to modify and deform the newer system in many ways making the systemic patterns which grew out of market capitalist forces clearer and easier to delineate than in older settlement areas. However, the struggle between the forces of market capitalism, settlers and indigenous Australians over space, labor, physical and economic resources and power relationships are both unique to place and time and universal in allowing an understanding of how such complicated regional, interregional and global forces shape a settler society. Through an examination of historical records, town layout and architecture, landscape analysis, excavation data, and material culture analysis, the author created a nuanced understanding of the social, economic, and cultural developments that took place during this dynamic period in Australian history. In examining this complex settlement history, the author employed several different research methodologies in parallel, to create a comprehensive understanding of the area. Her research techniques will be invaluable to researchers struggling to understand similarly complex sociocultural evolutions throughout the globe.
