Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of the Port of Boston, 1913 The prospect of the completion of the Panama Canal in 1915, the realization of New England business men that we must find new markets for our manufactured goods, the far-reaching plans for the development of our harbor - these and many other factors would seem to indicate a considerable increase in the shipping and receiving of goods through the port of Boston during the next ten years. The reason for this book is the belief of the Directors and the Committee on Foreign Trade of the Boston Chamber of Commerce that a compilation of useful information concerning shipping facilities, customs regulations, tables of foreign moneys, weights and measures, etc., will prove to be of real assistance to the business men of New England who already ship goods through this port or who are considering the making of such shipments. This book has been prepared under the direction of the Chamber's Committee on Foreign Trade. Some of the material has been collected for the first time. Some omissions and some errors have undoubtedly been made. If, however, there is the real demand for a publication of this kind - and the preliminary canvass seemed to indicate that there is - a revised edition will be issued for 1914. Any errors which are brought to our attention will be corrected in that edition, and such other information will be added as more mature consideration may seem to warrant. The Committee is indebted to many persons for their assistance in compiling this information. Particularly do they wish to acknowledge the cooperation of officials of the United States Treasury Department, the Boston Customs officials, the Directors of the Port, the railroad and steamship companies, the various steamship agencies, members of the Committee on Maritime Affairs, and the business men of the city who subscribed for advertising space and thereby made it financially possible to go ahead with the book. The Board was created by chapter 748 of the Acts of the year 1911. The members of the Board were first appointed Dec. 6, 1911. Offices have been established at 40 Central Street, Boston. An adequate engineering staff has been organized under Mr. Frank W. Hodgdon as chief engineer. The Year's Commerce. The business of the port has recorded satisfactory growth during the year. Entrances in the foreign trade were 3,061,733 net tons, against 2,907,821 net tons in 1911, an increase of 153,912 tons. Entrances in the coastwise trade were 12,258,030 gross tons, against 11,905,887 gross tons in 1911, an increase of 352,143 tons. Value of foreign trade (year ending June 30, 1912), domestic imports and exports only, was $198, 985, 187, against $188,131,522 in 1911, an increase of $10,853,665. Including the Canadian intransit business, total value of foreign trade (year ending June 30, 1912) was $234,918,975, against $220,837,368 in 1911, an increase of $14,081,607. The marked improvement in ocean shipping which began in 1911 continued through 1912, and the last three months of 1912 have been the best months in the steamship trade for many years. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Redevelopment of the Boston Waterfront By the first decades of the twentieth century, the utilitarian steamship had replaced the graceful clipper; but more significant to Boston's decline as a prosperous port was the introduction of the railroad and the truck as means of transport. By l930, Boston was no longer a major port, but rather a market for goods transported over land from New York and Baltimore. The relation of use to form in both the wharves and the market place became increasingly obscure. The warehouses along Commercial, India and Long Wharves began to house small manufacturing and storage firms. Although some fishermen remained, most of the fishing and virtually all of the shipping business moved to South Boston. The waterfront was no longer the nerve and energy of Boston's economic center, and the thriving, elegant wharves were deserted and derelict. Although the North End did not lose its life or its charm, it lost its connection to the sea; although it still produces rich aromas of garlic and pasta, the waterfront does not give it life. History and biography indeed are woven into the relation, but with lighter thread, though none the less accurate, than in the conventional web. The reminiscent method was adopted because as a resident of Boston for the most part of this eventful half century, as an active journalist from the early eighteen sixties, and a managing or a chief editor of Boston daily newspapers for considerable periods, the editor has seen Boston grow from the interesting but little historic city of fifty years back into the splendid metropolis of light and leading of today; and through his newspaper connections has come in touch directly or indirectly with leaders of the epoch reviewed, merchants, financiers, professional men, politicians, officials of city and state, the master minds of the community that "make the wheels go round." During this time he has seen the rise of many individuals and firms who have left their impress on trade, and commerce and industry; has seen great changes wrought in the physical and spiritual city; the development of great institutions, educational, learned, devoted to the arts and sciences, that have made Boston a treasure house for American scholars and students; and the initiation of public utilities of subsequent country-wide adoption. Although the story of the evolution of all the greater American cities is wonderful and worth the telling, yet certain developments in Boston within the period covered by this work are of particular moment, especially since it was the parent city of the telephone and of the electric subway; and since it was also the first American seaboard city to take advance steps in regard to the systematic development as a port. While this story might well have been told by any trained newspaper man, the editor feels himself particularly fortunate as the narrator in that it has been his personal privilege to come in direct contact with various leading citizens who have had the commanding influence in certain formative periods of the city's comparatively recent growth.
