Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Population and Riches of Nations: Considered Together, Not Only With Regard to Their Positive and Relative Increase, but With Regard to Their Tendency to Morals, Prosperity, and Happiness The first idea of writing the present slender Volume was prompted by some passages in jean-baptiste Say's Traite' d'economie Politique which while rea ding the vvork at Paris, in Aug. 1818 struck me as not only erroneous, but as full of perplexing or mischievous conse quences. On referring to Ricardo's very able lireatise, I did not perceive that he had detected some Of these errors; but I perceived with extreme regret, that he completely coincided with others of them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before the 99% occupied Wall Street... Before the concept of social justice had impinged on the social conscience... Before the social safety net had even been conceived... By the turn of the 20th Century, the era of the robber barons, Andrew Carnegie (1835-1919) had already accumulated a staggeringly large fortune; he was one of the wealthiest people on the globe. He guaranteed his position as one of the wealthiest men ever when he sold his steel business to create the United States Steel Corporation. Following that sale, he spent his last 18 years, he gave away nearly 90% of his fortune to charities, foundations, and universities. His charitable efforts actually started far earlier. At the age of 33, he wrote a memo to himself, noting ..".The amassing of wealth is one of the worse species of idolatry. No idol more debasing than the worship of money." In 1881, he gave a library to his hometown of Dunfermline, Scotland. In 1889, he spelled out his belief that the rich should use their wealth to help enrich society, in an article called "The Gospel of Wealth" this book. Carnegie writes that the best way of dealing with wealth inequality is for the wealthy to redistribute their surplus means in a responsible and thoughtful manner, arguing that surplus wealth produces the greatest net benefit to society when it is administered carefully by the wealthy. He also argues against extravagance, irresponsible spending, or self-indulgence, instead promoting the administration of capital during one's lifetime toward the cause of reducing the stratification between the rich and poor. Though written more than a century ago, Carnegie's words still ring true today, urging a better, more equitable world through greater social consciousness.

Book The Classical Economists Revisited

Download or read book The Classical Economists Revisited written by D. P. O'Brien and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2017-12-11 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Classical Economists Revisited conveys the extent, diversity, and richness of the literature of economics produced in the period extending from David Hume's Essays of 1752 to the final contributions of Fawcett and Cairnes in the 1870s. D. P. O'Brien thoroughly updates, rewrites, and expands the vastly influential work he first published in 1975, The Classical Economists. In particular, he sets out to make clear the shaping of a comprehensive vision of the working of an open economy, building on the great work of Adam Smith in Wealth of Nations, a development that was substantially affected by the contributions of David Ricardo. He shows that the Classical literature was in fact the work of a host of thinkers from a wide range of backgrounds. Covering the intellectual roots of the Classical literature and its methodological approaches, and the developed theories of value, distribution, money, trade, population, economic growth, and public finance, and examining the Classical attitudes toward a rich variety of policy issues, The Classical Economists Revisited considers not only the achievements of the Classical writers but also their legacy to the later development of economics. A seminal contribution to the field, this book will be treasured for many years to come by economists, historians of economics, instructors and their students, and anyone interested in the sweeping breadth and enduring influence of the classical economists.

Book Remaking the Wealth of the Nations

Download or read book Remaking the Wealth of the Nations written by Md Shamsul A. Chowdhury and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2018-07-23 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has found out the reasons as to why the "wealth of nations" differ from each other? Why the GDP per capita of Canada, and the U.S. were $43,248.5 and $56,115.7 respectively in 2015, whereas Mexico was languishing at $9,005, despite sharing common borders? Why is the per capita of Malawi not identical to Luxembourg or USA? Why the mountains of macro and micro economic studies failed to grow the economy up to expectation? Have the theories of capitalism and communism dissipated into thin air? Should the world think about an alternative option or formula for a better economy? "Remaking the Wealth of the Nations" has carried out extensive research on different economies, economic theories, ideas, and found out the common causes of economic successes and failures of the economies. Finally, this book has given out appropriate solution through clearly defining and explaining a new formula of "Artificial Productivity" to help the economists, leaders, and policy makers to remake the economies.
