Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pool of Flame For as many as three livelong days this man had been reduced to the necessity of dressing himself with his own fair hands - and that at least thrice daily, who did nothing by halves. And, somehow, mysteriously, his discarded garments had for the most part remained where he had thrown them, despite the earnest efforts of the fem/me de chambre to restore something resembling order from this man-made chaos. For servants all liked well the o'rourke, improvident soul that he was, freehanded to a fault. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Madge O' the Pool: The Gypsy Christ and Other Tales When the January fog hangs heavy upon London it comes down upon the Pool as though it were sluiced there like a drain, or as a mass of garbage shot over a declivity in a waste place. The Pool is not a lovely spot in winter, though it has a beauty of its own on the rare days when the sun shines in an unclouded frosty sky, or when a north-wester comes down from the distant heights of Highgate and Hampstead, and slaps the incoming tide with short splashes of waves washed up by the downward current, till the whole reach of the Thames thereabouts is a jumble of blue and white and of gleaming if dirty greys and greens. On midwinter nights, too, when the moon has swung up out of the smoke, like a huge fire-balloon adrift from the. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The White Flame: A Play The Time of this Act is in the early dawn of Egypt, when the pyramids were new and human motive was little mercenary, when religion and philosophy were one and did not claim to be other than the Explanation of Life and Nature. This was before theology, when ceremonies were known to be but symbols and priests were but teachers and friendly guides on the Way. It was a time analogous to that still earlier time in which man ceased to be Androgyne, and the De-volutionary forces were still accentuating the Separation of the sexes. Hence Asceticism was logically the way of knowledge and power. [A time remote and a Condition now Reversed.] The Scene is in a chamber of the Great Pyramid. A little to the right of center is an Altar on which burns steadily a Blue Flame. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Fire People Sci Fi Classic

Download or read book The Fire People Sci Fi Classic written by Ray Cummings and published by e-artnow. This book was released on 2020-12-17 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first of the new meteors landed on the earth in November, 1940. It was discovered by a farmer in his field near Brookline, Massachusetts, shortly after daybreak on the morning of the 11th. Astronomically, the event was recorded by the observatory at Harvard as the sudden appearance of what apparently was a new star, increasing in the short space of a few hours from invisibility to a power beyond that of the first magnitude, and then as rapidly fading again to invisibility. This star was recorded by two of the other great North American observatories, and by one in the Argentine Republic. That it was comparatively small in mass and exceedingly close to the earth, even when first discovered, was obvious. All observers agreed that it was a heavenly body of an entirely new order.
