Book Missions and The World Crisis

Download or read book Missions and The World Crisis written by Fulton J. Sheen and published by . This book was released on 2023-11-24 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Missions and the World Crisis Unless Souls are Saved, Nothing is Saved Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen was a man for all seasons. Over his lifetime, he spent himself for souls, transforming lives with the clear teaching of the truths of Christ and His Church through his books, his radio addresses, his lectures, his television series, and his many newspaper columns. In 1950, Sheen became the National Director of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, raising money to support the missions. During the 16 years that he held this position, he raised millions of dollars to support the missionary activity of the Church. These efforts influenced tens of millions of people all over the world, bringing them to know Christ and his Church. In addition, his own preaching and personal example brought about many converts to the faith. Sheen said that one of his greatest loves was for the missions and the propagation of the faith. "It is not only souls that have to be saved; it is society. It is not only souls that have to be sanctified; it is bodies as well. Sheen further added that "Christian civilization was once considered as 'inside' the reservation, and non-Christian civilizations as 'outside'; but today the fence has been broken down with the result that the distinction between 'foreign' and 'Christian' or Christian and pagan is practically eliminated. It is the world of mass civilization which has to be reconciled to God and that the most worthy of causes is to pray for the 1,100,000,000 pagans in the world who know neither the Sacred Heart, nor the Immaculate Heart." Many will say that Missions and the World Crisis is one of Archbishop Sheen's most important books. Even though it was written over sixty years ago, it is still the most timely, informative, reliable, and dynamic treatment of a critical topic available today. The mission field is near and dear to the Archbishop - and he was completely familiar with every phase of it. Gathered here are some of his editorials and articles on the subject of the missions. Together they present a remarkably comprehensive picture of the missions and their significant role in the drama of the modern world affairs. Here is the story of what is really happening in the missionary field as enacted by the people who are "living it out" - day by day - working, praying, waiting for that one day when the picture will emerge completely and in correct perspective for all to see. No politicians' report, this; no hollow observations by mere observers. This is real . . . this is the story behind the stories we hear in the newscasts and read in the newspapers. This is the story we want to know - need to know to interpret what is happening.

Book Reference Guide to Christian Missionary Societies in China From the Sixteenth to the Twentieth Century

Download or read book Reference Guide to Christian Missionary Societies in China From the Sixteenth to the Twentieth Century written by R. G. Tiedemann and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-01 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive guide will facilitate scholarly research concerning the history of Christianity in China as well as the wider Sino-Western cultural encounter. It will assist scholars in their search for material on the anthropological, educational, medical, scientific, social, political, and religious dimensions of the missionary presence in China prior to 1950.The guide contains nearly five hundred entries identifying both Roman Catholic and Protestant missionary sending agencies and related religious congregations. Each entry includes the organization's name in English, followed by its Chinese name, country of origin, and denominational affiliation. Special attention has been paid to identifying the many small, lesser-known groups that arrived in China during the early decades of the twentieth century. In addition, a special category of the as yet little-studied indigenous communities of Chinese women has also been included. Multiple indexes enhance the guide's accessibility.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of the origin of Vatican Radio provides a unique look at the history of World War II The book offers the first wide-ranging study on the history of Vatican Radio from its origins (1931) to the end of Pius XII’s pontificate (1958) based on unpublished sources. The opening of the Secret Vatican Archives on the records regarding Pius XII will shed light on the most controversial pontificate of the 20th century. Moreover, the recent rearrangement of the Vatican media provided the creation of a multimedia archive that is still in Fieri. This research is an original point of view on the most relevant questions concerning these decades: the relation of the Catholic Church with the Fascist regimes and Western democracies; the attitude toward anti-Semitism and the Shoah in Europe, and in general toward the total war; the relationship of the Holy See with the new media in the mass society; the questions arisen in the after-war period such as the Christian Democratic Party in Italy; the new role of women; and anti-communism and the competition for the consensus in the social and moral order in a secularized society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Based on extensive primary archival materials, Faith and Action is a comprehensive history of the Catholic Archdiocese of Cincinnati over the past 175 years. Fortin paints a picture of the Catholic Church's involvement in the city's development and contextualizes the changing values and programs of the Church in the region. He characterizes the institution's history as one of both faith and action. From the time of its founding to the present, the way Catholics in the archdiocese of Cincinnati have viewed their relationship with the rest of society has changed with each major change in society. In the beginning, while espousing separation of church and state and religious liberty, they wanted the Church to adapt to the new American situation. In the mid-nineteenth century Cincinnati Catholics dealt with a dominant Protestant culture and, at times, a hostile environment, whereas a century later it had become much more a part of the American mainstream. Throughout most of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries most Catholics saw themselves as outsiders. During the past fifty years, however, Cincinnati Catholics, like most of their counterparts in the United States, have felt more confident and viewed themselves as very much a part of American society"--Publisher's description
