Book Exit Voice and Loyalty

Download or read book Exit Voice and Loyalty written by Albert O. Hirschman and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1970 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An innovator in contemporary thought on economic and political development looks here at decline rather than growth. Albert O. Hirschman makes a basic distinction between alternative ways of reacting to deterioration in business firms and, in general, to dissatisfaction with organizations: one, “exit,” is for the member to quit the organization or for the customer to switch to the competing product, and the other, “voice,” is for members or customers to agitate and exert influence for change “from within.” The efficiency of the competitive mechanism, with its total reliance on exit, is questioned for certain important situations. As exit often undercuts voice while being unable to counteract decline, loyalty is seen in the function of retarding exit and of permitting voice to play its proper role. The interplay of the three concepts turns out to illuminate a wide range of economic, social, and political phenomena. As the author states in the preface, “having found my own unifying way of looking at issues as diverse as competition and the two-party system, divorce and the American character, black power and the failure of ‘unhappy’ top officials to resign over Vietnam, I decided to let myself go a little.”

Book The German Democratic Republic

Download or read book The German Democratic Republic written by Henry Krisch and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-11 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important new overview of the German Democratic Republic focuses on the country’s search for identity and legitimacy throughout its history. Dr. Henry Krisch analyzes major aspects of East German life—political, economic, cultural, and societal—to answer the fundamental question of the nature of the GDR. Arguing that East Germany has been shaped by history to an unusual degree, he explores the country’s historical background, including the Soviet Zone, the origins of the GDR, and the leadership of Ulbricht and Honecker, and examines the role and structure of the party, state, and military and security forces. The main emphasis of this book, however, is upon current problems and on likely responses to them in the near future. Issues such as the viability of communist politics in a technologically advanced society, the relationship of the GDR to a common German heritage and a competing West German state, and the country’s role within the Soviet alliance system are examined in detail, and current social concerns, including the peace movement, cultural trends, the role of women and youth, and the prime importance of sports, are discussed.

Book State Practice Regarding State Succession and Issues of Recognition

Download or read book State Practice Regarding State Succession and Issues of Recognition written by Jan Klabbers and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-08-07 with total page 521 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pilot Project of the Council of Europe on State Practice regarding State Succession and Issues of Recognition carried out under the aegis of the Ad Hoc Committee of Legal Advisers on Public International Law (CAHDI) encompasses the practice of sixteen member States of the Council of Europe and provides significant information about these States' position vis-à-vis the new European architecture following the developments of 1989. On the basis of the information gathered, the CAHDI decided on the preparation of a report by the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law, the T.M.C. Asser Institute and the Erik Castrén Institute of International Law and Human Rights. With this report the Council of Europe wishes to contribute in a practical manner to the celebration of the United Nations Decade of International Law (1989-1999) and to facilitate the understanding of how States can help to build a stable and peaceful international community by paving the way for the progressive development of international law in this area.

Book Family and Succession Law in Germany

Download or read book Family and Succession Law in Germany written by Peter Gottwald and published by Springer. This book was released on 2001-07-12 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For a concise exposition and analysis of the essential elements of German law with regard to family relations, marital property, and succession to estates, this very useful volume has no peers. It covers the sources and instruments of family and succession law as practiced in Germany, the courts that adjudicate and administer the laws, and issues surrounding the person as a legal entity (especially in relation to consent) and the legal disposition of property among family members. The legal aspects of such matters as nationality, domicile, and residence; marriage, divorce, and cohabitation; adoption and guardianship; intestate and testamentary succession and inter vivos arrangements; and the acquisition and administration of estates are all treated to a degree of depth that will prove useful in nearly any situation likely to arise in legal practice. This valuable work will be welcomed by notaries, lawyers, judges, and registrars of civil status who find themselves having to apply German law as a result of applicable law rules of international private law. However, it is also of great value to students and practitioners as a quick guide and easy-to-use practical resource in the field.
