This edited volume showcases how anthropology can contribute to an understanding of ongoing transnational dynamics and the new wave of scholarship on the Mediterranean. The Mediterranean is back as a locus of international anxiety and academic concern. It has reemerged in the international news cycle as a space of desperate crossings and tragic endings, as the site in which a refugee crisis rivalling that of the Second World War is playing out in real time for a global viewing public. The scale of the crisis has called into question Europe’s humanitarian principles and internal political union, making the Mediterranean into a mirror for long-standing tensions between norms of universalism and demands for national security. These captivating events have further raised the tide of scholars’ interest in the Mediterranean. How should ethnographers contribute to the new wave of scholarship on the Mediterranean? To what extent does the Mediterranean offer alternative forms of political relatedness to those construed from within Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East? In this volume, we reframe classical themes from early iterations of Mediterranean anthropology to address these questions in our examinations of changing dynamics across land and sea borders, bringing ethnography back to the study of the Mediterranean, and the Mediterranean – with its Mediterraneanism – back to ethnography. To address this challenge, The Politics of Persuasion employs a multifaceted, mixed method approach to studying mass media and public attitudes. Anthony R. DiMaggio analyzes more than a dozen case studies covering US domestic economic policy and examines a wide range of theories of how bias operates in mass media with regard to coverage of these issues. While some research claims that journalists are overly negative and biased against government officials, some reveals that journalists favor citizens groups. Still other studies contend there is a liberal bias in the media, a progovernment bias, or a bias in favor of advertisers and business interests. Through his analysis, DiMaggio is the first to systematically examine all of these competing interpretations. He concludes that reporters tailor stories to corporate and government interests, but argues that the ability to "manufacture consent" from the public in favor of these elite views is far from guaranteed. According to DiMaggio, citizens often make use of their own personal experiences and prior attitudes to challenge official narratives.

These challenges continue to be met with traditional shortterm, feel-good, snake oil remedies. None of these actions begin to address the real structural problems in the U.S. economy or in its schools. Education Redux examines the evolution of our economic despair. The popular perception is that the definitive cure is better education. There is a problem. K-12 schools do not work. Per student spending, on a constant dollar basis, is up 600% over the past few decades. Yet, standardized test scores remain flat. The proposed solutions never change—more money, better teacher performance, more parental involvement. Researchers dependably provide nothing more than minor variations on these themes, reiterating hackneyed predicaments and fixes. The school problem is essentially twofold. First, school curriculum and instructional design are incompatible with the predisposition of the New Kids (Millennial cohort). Second, schools are perceived by students as not relevant. Education professionals treat schools as though they operate in a vacuum, which is a lethal error. School reform agendas have to be responsive to students within the context of social and economic realities. The loss of gainful employment opportunities in our economy is directly related to the dismantling of the American manufacturing sector. The restoration of a 21st century manufacturing economy is predicated on our ability to infuse young people with the technical and entrepreneurial skills necessary to pursue productive careers. For the New Kids, video games define their reality. Games are based on skill, not following orders. Education Redux offers an operational guide, predicated on the use of up-to-date video game technology, for making schools both relevant and enjoyable. The requirement for individual expression and building a community through the development of group skills can be attained using a program called the e-OneRoom Schoolhouse. Education Redux is the product of comprehensive research by the author, who has extensive formal training and experience in manufacturing, finance, teaching and community affairs.
