Book Digital Shutdowns and Social Media

Download or read book Digital Shutdowns and Social Media written by Shekh Moinuddin and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-03-10 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a spatial insights on the social mediasphere in the context of digital shutdowns and reflects the dimensions of political economy and of social media in general. Internet shutdowns have been found to be more prevalent in developing countries than in developed countries, with India leading in Internet shutdowns in the world. Internet shutdowns have occurred in India for several reasons, mainly to hinder the spreading of information through social media – this is discussed in detail along with political motives behind this and how this can conflict with government policies, such as the flagship program “Digital India” which is ostensibly meant to improve the infrastructure and expansion of digital information throughout the country. This book suggests new dimensions in the digital spatiality. Furthermore, the digital space is defined and discussed, including its role and how this might be reflected in concepts around spatiality and spaces. More concretely, the book considers the following questions: How is social media reflected in spatial sciences? How does the space differ from more tangible spaces, such as the hydrosphere or atmosphere? How do (computer/mobile phone) screens behave as a space/place in the context of behavioural sciences? How is this reflected in what is shaping and reshaping the spatiality of digital gadgets? Do digital gadgets change the socialization process that’s often considered a path towards how we develop in society? How do internet shutdowns affect the political economy and what patterns can be seen in how individuals, companies and the internet industry in particular react to these shutdowns in India?

Book Politics and the Twitter Revolution

Download or read book Politics and the Twitter Revolution written by John H. Parmelee and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2011-12-16 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Politics and the Twitter Revolution: How Tweets Influence the Relationship between Political Leaders and the Public, by John H. Parmelee and Shannon L. Bichard, is the first comprehensive examination of how Twitter is used politically. Surveys and in-depth interviews with political Twitter users answer several important questions, including: Who follows the political leaders on Twitter, and why? How persuasive are political tweets? Is political Twitter use good for democracy? These and other questions are answered from theoretical perspectives, such as uses and gratifications, word-of-mouth communication, selective exposure, innovation characteristics, and the continuity-discontinuity framework. In addition, content analysis and frame analysis illustrate how political leaders' tweets frame their policies and personalities. The findings in Politics and the Twitter Revolution show Twitter to be surprisingly influential on political discourse. Twitter has caused major changes in how people engage politically. Followers regularly take actions that are requested in leaders' tweets, and, in many cases, leaders' tweets shape followers' political views more than friends and family. Other findings raise concerns. For some, Twitter use contributes to political polarization, and there is frequently a disconnect between what followers expect from leaders on Twitter and what those leaders are giving them.

Book Social Movements Media and Civil Society in Contemporary India

Download or read book Social Movements Media and Civil Society in Contemporary India written by Anindya Sekhar Purakayastha and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-08-09 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines instances of transformative dissent, turning points or shifts in popular mobilisation patterns in contemporary India, while adopting a historical approach and analysing past events. Exploring the different continuities and discontinuities in mobilising patterns and dissident agency in India, the authors present a heterogeneous insurrectional pattern that pivoted around issues of caste, class, religion, land reform, labour, taxation and territorial control, with anti-colonialism movements becoming prominent in the first half of the twentieth century. The authors move beyond this to explore more recent templates of mobilisation which surfaced towards the end of the twentieth century, during India’s liberalisation period. With growing marketisation and technological advancement, unprecedented changes in social relations, growing economic opportunities and cultural transfusion taking place, the country became a ‘New India’ - one which aspired to be a global player in the wider technological public sphere. Tracing the historical trajectories of social movements in India, this book examines recent trends in digitised dissidence and explores new frontiers of protests, providing fresh insights for those researching the history of social movements, South Asian and Indian history and postcolonial studies.

Book Twitter Sentiment Analysis of the 2019 Indian Election

Download or read book Twitter Sentiment Analysis of the 2019 Indian Election written by Jaydeep Motisariya and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With easily available internet services in India and the rest of the world in the recent past, there is more and more traction towards social media like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, etc. This has enabled individuals the freedom of speech and to display their sentiments and emotions towards society. Social media has brought people closer than ever before and has provided a common platform for individuals to communicate. Some influencers promote products on social media platforms, while politicians run their campaigns online for broader reach. Social media has become the fuel for globalization. In 2019, the Indian Lok Sabha Elections saw around 360 million tweets on Twitter, giving their opinions and showing their sentiment towards the political leaders and their parties. Sentiment analysis is the computational investigation of opinions, evaluations, views, and feelings expressed in a text. The political parties have used this technique to run their campaigns and understand the opinions of the public. This also enables them to modify their campaigns accordingly. In this research text mining was performed on approximately 200,000 thousand tweets collected over four months that referenced four national political parties in India during the campaigning period for the Lok Sabha elections in 2019. The sentiments of Twitter users were identified towards each of the considered Indian political parties, Congress, Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP), Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) using VADER (Valence Aware Dictionary and sEntiment Reasoner). A lexicon and rule-based sentiment analysis engine was created that is the principal platform to evaluate the opinions expressed in social media. The results of the analysis show that Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) being a lead runner in the elections of 2019 received more positive intent and emotions towards their campaigns and their leader Narendra Modi as compared to the other parties and their leaders.

Book Screenscapes of e Religiosity in India

Download or read book Screenscapes of e Religiosity in India written by Shekh Moinuddin and published by Springer. This book was released on 2024-04-05 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with three different subjects: geography, social media and religion equally to discuss e-religiosity in terms of screenscapes that shaped digital socialization processes wherein the role of digital devices in general and smartphones in particular are considered crucial and critical. The spatial dimension is the primary foundation of the book wherein both space and place are discussed in digital manifestations in spatial sense. Religiosity is discussed variably in a sense of spirituality, social theories, religions and images. The book uses some illustrations to understand image politics. Image politics is quintessential in the age of digital technologies when production and reproduction of images are not restricted to business only; rather it attracts politics too and politicians often use the same to make political scores against opponents. The book covers contemporary digital discourses of e-religiosity in a sense of screenscapes that often found pivot indaily discussions across social media platforms. Screenscapes are considered as mediated technologies when contents can be accessed from different social media apps to construct or deconstruct their views, narratives, discourses, ideas, emotions, and perceptions around religious images in day-to-day activities, practices, rituals, customs, traditions, faiths and beliefs. The used illustrations exclusively map Indian religious gestures, identities, values, and rituals in digital-spatial contexts. The book discusses seven major questions and argues the same across the chapters in varied representations and interpretations: How and to what extent has the meaning of religiosity changed in the digital age? What are the dimensions of e-religiosity in India? How are digital devices (re)shaping religiosity in terms of e-religiosity? How and to what extent digital devices are negotiating with social and cultural lives? What is digital spatiality? How and to what extent does social media influence religiosity?
