Book The Catholic Church and Politics in Colombia

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent research reveals a precipitous decrease in Catholic adherents across Latin America. Since 1970, numerous Latin Americans have professed a shift to Protestantism. Scholars have analyzed this trend within certain countries and as a regional tendency, but have not comprehensively addressed the Colombian case. Colombia is often considered the most Catholic of Latin American countries, with the Church historically much enmeshed in national politics. This study evaluates shifts in identified Colombian Catholics, the emergence of Protestantism, and other religious phenomena during three key historical epochs since 1930. Given Catholicism's historical bond with politics and society, these trends are meaningful for the future of Colombian politics. While this study reaches some conclusions regarding future Colombian religious-political dynamics, its major contribution is its synstudy of the history and literature covering the chief religious-political themes in Colombian history since 1930 and revealing patterns of religious-political interaction, where such an endeavor has not been accomplished elsewhere. Aiming to integrate sufficiently detailed historical accounts and statistics with diverse published academic analyses, this study lays the groundwork for more detailed prognostic studies on the future of the Colombian political system as it relates to a changing, yet in some respects incongruously stationary religious environment. Book Ye Shall Know Them by Their Fruits

Download or read book Ye Shall Know Them by Their Fruits written by Jason García Portilla and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why are historically Catholic countries and regions generally more corrupt and less competitive than historically Protestant ones? How has institutionalization of religion influenced the prosperity of countries in Europe and the Americas? This open access book addresses these critical questions by elucidating the hegemonic and emancipatory religious factors leading to these dissimilarities between countries. The book features up-to-date mixed methods from interdisciplinary research contributing to existing studies in the sociology of religion field by demonstrating--for the first time--the effect of the mutually reinforcing configuration of multiple prosperity triggers (religion--politics--environment). It demonstrates the differences in the institutionalization of Roman Catholicism and Protestantism by applying quantitative and qualitative methods and by performing a qualitative comparative analysis (QCA) of 65 countries. The author also provides a comprehensive survey and results of empirical research on different theories of development, focusing on the influence of religion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In what is destined to prove the definitive text for the present generation on the political, economic, and social structure of Colombia, Jorge Pablo Osterling explores the enigmatic nature of this special, even critical, anchor to the northern tier of South America. In many ways, Colombia is a huge success story: it is one of the oldest, most stable, functioning democracies; the land is blessed with rich and diversified resources and products; and its foreign debt has been kept in check as a consequence of sound economic management. But despite its positive social, cultural, economic, and political indicators, Colombia has been a nation beset by serious problems: overt corruption and unemployment are very high; and its public service facilities to outlying rural areas remain weak, thus making schooling, water supplies, health care, and electrification hard to establish at high levels. Above all, Colombia has a reputation, well earned, as one of the most violent nations in the world. Drug trafficking, common crime, and guerrilla activity are all pandemic and conspire to destabilize the regime. In this straightforward, compelling account, Osterling shows how this paradox has evolved, and why it has persisted over the past fifty years. He draws attention to parallel political structures: a functioning set of civilian institutions that coexist alongside one of the most powerful closed, hierarchical political elites in Latin America. Osterling locates the central problem of the maintenance of interpersonal relations as being more important to the functioning of Colombian society than impersonal norms. This is a country in which political bosses vie with popular democracy for control of the country.

Book The Catholic Church and Power Politics in Latin America

Download or read book The Catholic Church and Power Politics in Latin America written by Emelio Betances and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2007 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Click here to see a video interview with Emelio Betances. Click here to access the tables referenced in the book. Since the 1960s, the Catholic Church has acted as a mediator during social and political change in many Latin American countries, especially the Dominican Republic, Bolivia, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and El Salvador. Although the Catholic clergy was called in during political crises in all five countries, the situation in the Dominican Republic was especially notable because the Church's role as mediator was eventually institutionalized. Because the Dominican state was persistently weak, the Church was able to secure the support of the Balaguer regime (1966-1978) and ensure social and political cohesion and stability. Emelio Betances analyzes the particular circumstances that allowed the Church in the Dominican Republic to accommodate the political and social establishment; the Church offered non-partisan political mediation, rebuilt its ties with the lower echelons of society, and responded to the challenges of the evangelical movement. The author's historical examination of church-state relations in the Dominican Republic leads to important regional comparisons that broaden our understanding of the Catholic Church in the whole of Latin America.

Book The Role of the Catholic Church in Colombian Social Development Post World War II

Download or read book The Role of the Catholic Church in Colombian Social Development Post World War II written by Jessica Joy Gonzalez and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The Colombian Catholic Church has been known since the colonial time period to be highly conservative and has always sided with the conservative political party. With the meeting of the Latin American Episcopal Conference (CELAM) in Medellín, liberal thinkers began to write and promote social development activity. In Colombia during 1960's there were examples of priests and organizations that spoke out against the social order, but the examples of a move to the left in the Colombian Catholic Church were few and often fought against by the hierarchy of the Catholic Church. The research question that I pose is how did Vatican II affect the Catholic Church in Colombia? And how has the Catholic Church aided in Social development since Vatican II? The hypotheses put forth are that although there have been moves by certain orders and members of the Catholic Church to progress to the left, overall the hierarchy in the country has kept the Catholic Church predominantly conservative and made social development through the Catholic Church difficult. The interact ties between Church and State in Colombia cannot be ignored when researching the religious history and progression of the nation. It helped immensely to be resident in Colombia and gain a basic understanding of not only the history but also the people and their culture.
