Although the focus is mainly on Nigeria and the United States, the text also touches on situations in other countries that inevitably became intertwined with the American Nigeria relations, especially the situation in Southern Africa during the era of apartheid and minority rule and Liberia, during the country's bitter civil conflict.

Analyzing the changing international relations, the politics and society of both nations, and their respective economies, this thesis explores how new post-Cold War policies have emerged and remain in flux. This thesis argues that Nigeria is a vital country for the United States and that appropriate policies towards Nigeria will help the United States develop influence in all of Africa. It emphasizes that the doctrine of containment from the Cold War must be replaced by policies that promote the development of Nigeria's infrastructure and a more diverse economy while respecting the complex identities of Nigeria's peoples.

Although this relationship dates back to more than three decades, recent developments call for a careful and detailed analysis of this union and to this end, i seek to provide analysis of the relationship with respect to investment, trade, aid, and economic cooperation. Recent developments in China and Nigeria relationship are not unconnected with the renewed ties between the two giants as Nigeria has become one of China's most important trading partners in Africa. The contemporary waves of diplomatic relations appear to a reasonable extent mutually beneficial. Nigeria’s quest for development with an aggressive campaign for FDI as one of the motivating forces has opened the economy which China is seen as an ideal business partner. Accordingly, this paper, through a critical review of the literature examines, and evaluates the opportunities and challenges abound in the nascent economic and trade relationships, and discusses the prospects of the deals for the Chinese, Nigerian, and African socio-economic growth. Indeed, it is difficult to understand Nigeria, since it is a swirling paradox of riches and poverty, growth and stagnation, international influence and domestic paralysis, cultural diversity, and ethnic and religious clashes. For that reason, I am pleased to present this monograph, which seeks to reveal Nigeria to outsiders. It explores a key way to understand Nigeria through its political economy, which gives more nuanced insight into its entrenched problems, and thus offers better approaches by which the U.S. Government, and especially its military, can play a constructive role in maintaining the stability and integrity of Nigeria.

The failure of the postcolonial political elites to ensure inclusive governance has continued to foster centrifugal and centripetal forces that question the legitimacy of the state. The forces have deepened calls for secession, accentuated conflicts and predispose the country to possible disintegration. A new government approach is required that would ensure equal representation, access to power and equitable distribution of resources. Samuel Ojo Oloruntoba is Associate Professor in the Thabo Mbeki School of Public and International Affairs, University of South Africa, and Visiting Professor in the Institute of African Studies, Carleton University, Ottawa, ON, Canada. He is the author of Regionalism and Integration in Africa: EU-ACP Economic Partnership Agreements and Euro-Nigeria Relations(2016) and co-editor of The Palgrave Handbook of African Political Economy (with Toyin Falola, 2020).
