Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Political Economy of Humanism To have life and practicality, political economy should be studied in connection with its counterpart, the human constitution. Its positive element is subjective, while environment, or the objective, only constitutes its negativ ity. In other words, mind is the active worker, while labor, capital, land, wages, profits, and values are its instruments or outward articulations. Cooperation and competition are not external qualities belonging to some legal frame work or social system, but are dispositions in man. They cannot be put on or off as occasion may demand, but are matters of moral and ethical education. So, too, a true socialism is not a matter of political form, but its location must be within the human heart and consciousness. So, too, a true socialism is not a matter of political form, but its location must be within the human heart and consciousness. This is no attempt to make people content with things as they are, but to turn the search for improvement in a promising direction. Unrest and agitation are vastly better than stagnation, but to bring the best results they must be wisely practical and in harmony with Law. The general purpose of this volume is the outlining of a political economy which is natural and practical, rather than artificial and theoretical. While independent of professional methods, it aims to be usefully suggestive to the popular mind. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Philosophy and Political Economy in Some of Their Historical Relations Classic Reprint

Download or read book Philosophy and Political Economy in Some of Their Historical Relations Classic Reprint written by James Bonar and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Philosophy and Political Economy in Some of Their Historical Relations Political economy, or the study Of the relation Of human society to its material wealth, and philosophy, or the study Of first principles and ultimate issues, have at various times exerted an influence on one another which the history Of economics and philosophy makes very evident. Economical facts and practice, the actual condition Of national industries, wealth, and trade, as distinguished from theories about them, have, no doubt, had a Still greater influence, both on economists and philosophers and to estimate this effect of practice on theory would be a larger and perhaps a more important inquiry. Some writers have regarded this second inquiry as almost superseding the other, on the ground that the supreme force in human history IS economical.l It is clear that we may at least go as far as Erdmann, who begins his chapters on Greek Philosophy with the remark that philosophy arises when the struggle for existence has given place to a life Of leisure. Book Humanism in Economics and Business

Download or read book Humanism in Economics and Business written by Domènec Melé and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-02-25 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers different perspectives on Humanism as developed by Catholic Social Teaching, with a particular focus on its relevance in economics and business. The work is composed of three sections, covering what is meant by Christian Humanism, how it links with economic activity, and its practical relevance in the business world of today. It reviews the historical development of Christian Humanism and discusses the arguments which justify it in the current cultural context and how it contributes to human development. The book argues that the current recognition of human dignity and the existence of innate human rights are both ultimately rooted in Christian Humanism. It sets out the importance of the concept for economic activities, and how Christian Humanism can serve as a metaphysical foundation and ethical basis for a social market economy. Applying Christian Humanism to business leads to the centrality of the person in organizations and to seeing the company as a community of persons working together for the common good. Three thought-provoking case studies illustrate the wide-reaching positive impacts of applying Christian Humanism in the organization.

Book Classical Humanism and Republicanism in English Political Thought 1570 1640

Download or read book Classical Humanism and Republicanism in English Political Thought 1570 1640 written by Markku Peltonen and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-12-16 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Markku Peltonen examines humanist and republican themes in English political thinking between the mid-sixteenth century and the Civil War. He challenges the dominant view that humanism fizzled out in the middle of the sixteenth century only to re-emerge during the 1650s in the writings of such classical republicans as James Harrington and John Milton. The English continued to use central notions of the humanist tradition such as the virtuous civic life and vera nobilitas to portray themselves as citizens, characterizing their life as one of participation rather than subjection. They often resorted to openly republican themes - notably that governors be elected rather than hereditary - and the classical idea of the mixed constitution was profoundly influential. Dr Peltonen casts an important new perspective on these humanist and republican themes, and locates their uses in specific historical circumstances.

Book Humanism and the Culture of Renaissance Europe

Download or read book Humanism and the Culture of Renaissance Europe written by Charles G. Nauert (Jr.) and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1995-09-28 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new textbook provides students with a highly readable synthesis of the major determining features of the European Renaissance, one of the most influential cultural revolutions in history. Professor Nauert's approach is broader than the traditional focus on Italy, and tackles the themes in the wider European context. He traces the origins of the humanist 'movement' and connects it to the social and political environments in which it developed. In a tour-de-force of lucid exposition over six wide-ranging chapters, Nauert charts the key intellectual, social, educational and philosophical concerns of this humanist revolution, using art and biographical sketches of key figures to illuminate the discussion. The study also traces subsequent transformations of humanism and its solvent effect on intellectual developments in the late Renaissance.

Book Late Neoclassical Economics

Download or read book Late Neoclassical Economics written by Yahya M. Madra and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-06-10 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several contemporary economic theories revolve around different concepts: market failures, institutions, transaction costs, information asymmetries, motivational diversity, cognitive limitations, strategic behaviors and evolutionary stability. In recent years, many economists have argued that the increase in circulation and mobilization of these new and heterogeneous concepts and their associated methodologies (e.g., experiments, evolutionary modelling, simulations) signify the death of neoclassical economics. Late Neoclassical Economics: The Restoration of Theoretical Humanism in Contemporary Economic Theory draws on the work of Louis Althusser, Michel Foucault and the Amherst School, to construct the concept of a self-transparent and self-conscious human subject (Homo economicus) as the theoretical humanist core of the neoclassical tradition. Instead of identifying the emergent heterogeneity as a break from neoclassicism, this book offers a careful genealogy of many of the new concepts and approaches - including evolutionary game theory, experimental economics and behavioural economics - and reads their elaboration as part of the restoration of the theoretical humanist core of the tradition. ‘Late neoclassical economics’ is therefore characterized as a collection of diverse approaches which have emerged in response to the drift towards structuralism. This book is suitable for those who study political economy, history of economic thought and philosophy of economics. The arguments put forward in this text will also resonate with anyone who is interested in the fate of the neoclassical tradition and the future of economic theory.
