Download or read book The Polite Americans written by Gerald Carson and published by Graymalkin Media. This book was released on 2020-01-01 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Americans have traveled a far piece since Goody Randall climbed over the back of a Bay Colony pew in defense of her social position, or a frontier Congressman tried to eat the doilies at a White House dinner, or, more recently, since the adjustable Emily Post interpreted the social law on whether a lady’s maid could appear in bobbed hair. (She could not!) With unfailing scholarship, great good humor and occasional overtones of irony when snobbery raises its ugly nose, Gerald Carson here portrays the journey of American manners through shifting tastes and customs in regards to weddings, dances, hair styles, drinking, dueling, dress, smoking, the telephone, the automobile, the rise of the country club and the history of the fraternal lodge, among hundreds of topics. There is much of special interest to citizens of Chicago, San Francisco, Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore, New York and many other cities. There is a full chapter on manners in the nation’s capital as well as one on books of etiquette. The author’s emphasis is upon the middle class, the mainstream of America’s national life, rather than Society with the capital S. This field has been plowed a good many times, while Mr. Carson’s area is almost untouched. His central theme is the reaching out of the American man and woman for self-improvement and a life of some grace. Citizens of the United States are still free to become, as the late Professor Arthur M. Schlesinger pointed out, as unequal as they can.

Book Men and the Emergence of Polite Society Britain 1660 1800

Download or read book Men and the Emergence of Polite Society Britain 1660 1800 written by Philip (Research Editor, New Dictionary Of National Biography) Carter and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-07-30 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an account of masculinity in eighteenth century Britain. In particular it is concerned with the impact of an emergent polite society on notions of manliness and the gentleman. From the 1660s a new type of social behaviour, politeness, was promoted by diverse writers. Based on continental ideas of refinement, it stressed the merits of genuine and generous sociability as befitted a progressive and tolerant nation. Early eighteenth century writers encouraged men to acquire the characteristics of politeness by becoming urbane town gentlemen. Later commentators promoted an alternative culture of sensibility typified by the man of feeling. Central to both was the need to spend more time with women, now seen as key agents of refinement. The relationship demanded a reworking of what it meant to be manly. Being manly and polite was a difficult balancing act. Refined manliness presented new problems for eighteenth century men. What was the relationship between politeness and duplicity? Were feminine actions such as tears and physical delicacy acceptable or not? Critics believed polite society led to effeminacy, not manliness, and condemned this failure of male identity with reference to the fop. This book reveals the significance of social over sexual conduct for eighteenth century definitions of masculinity. It shows how features traditionally associated with nineteenth century models were well established in the earlier figure of the polite town-dweller or sentimental man of feeling. Using personal stories and diverse public statements drawn from conduct books, magazines, sermons and novels, this is a vivid account of the changing status of men and masculinity as Britain moved into the modern period.

Book excerpt: “This terrific debut lifts the veil on the charming old city of Charleston and a prominent Lowcountry family to deliver an entertaining story about becoming yourself without totally rejecting your past. Plus: debutante balls! I love this novel.” —Lauren Weisberger, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Devil Wears Prada and When Life Gives You Lululemons A captivating debut novel that looks inside the private lives of Charleston aristocracy, where a former debutante learns that sometimes good behavior leads to bad decisions. Tourists think they see the real Charleston, but Simons Smythe knows there’s more to her hometown than sweet tea and Southern hospitality. Behind the walled gardens, inside the fabled historic homes, live Charleston’s elite. Simons was born into this powerful aristocracy that has quietly ruled the city for centuries. Simons’s family has a banner year ahead; Her older sister will give birth to her second child, and her younger sister will make her debut—a series of cocktail parties and balls to introduce her to society. And in one year, Simons plans to marry Trip. She hopes that’s enough time to fall back in love. Simons produces the news at a local TV station, a job that increasingly tests her loyalty to her family and friends. On her days off, Simons surfs the waves of Folly Beach, crabs the salty rivers of Edisto Island, and follows her wayward heart to King Street bars. The one touchstone in this confusing time is her elegant and secretive grandmother, Laudie, who—repeatedly and mysteriously—urges Simons to “be brave”. In this sparkling novel, Simons unlocks riddles from the past, flirts with a new future, and discovers that some rules are made to be broken.
