Book Palimpsests of the Real in Recent French Poetry

Download or read book Palimpsests of the Real in Recent French Poetry written by Glenn W. Fetzer and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-08-30 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The richness and diversity of poetic voices in France since the mid-twentieth century sharpen the challenge of charting the poetic landscape in ways that are accessible and cohesive. Since poetry in France has long demonstrated a predisposition to philosophical questions. Palimpsests of the Real in Recent French Poetry reads the work of six poets through the lens of the Pre-Socratics. The poets discussed range from the well-known – Jacques Dupin, André du Bouchet, Eugène Guillevic – to the lesser celebrated – Jean-Louis Chrétien, Céline Zins, and Emmanuel Hocquard. What binds these six together is an interest in the real, and a fascination with the ways of sensing one’s world, of experiencing time, unity, memory, and change. For each poet, the aesthetic character of the work takes precedence, and its presentation is informed by the philosophical groundwork laid by ancient thinkers. Written not only for specialists but also for students and all readers with a general interest in literature and poetry, this book provides introductory material to each poet considered as well as offers critical readings that never stray far from the poetic texts.

Book Challenges of Translation in French Literature

Download or read book Challenges of Translation in French Literature written by Richard Bales and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2005 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In celebrating the academic career and practice of a distinguished scholar of French literature, this volume concentrates on one of Peter Broome's major preoccupations and attainments: translation. Eschewing a dogmatic, theoretical approach, the contributors (former colleagues and students) tackle four rich areas of study: modern anglophone poets' reactions to, and translations of, authors with whom they have closely identified (Racine, the Symbolists, Saint-John Perse, Valéry); problematics of translating specific poets of recent centuries (Rimbaud, Mallarmé, Valéry, Césaire, some contemporary poets); reception and interaction in two foreign countries (Australia, Spain); and a more fluid interpretation of translation, moving the notion across into wider realms of literary expression (Mallarmé, Proust, Assia Djebar). A focalising feature, punctuating the volume, are Peter Broome's own translations of hitherto unpublished poems by five major contemporary French writers: Jean-Paul Auxeméry, Marie-Claire Bancquart, Louise Herlin, Vénus Khoury-Ghata and Jean-Charles Vegliante. The book thus intertwines theory and practice in a non-prescriptive manner which invites further elaboration and analysis.

  • Pages : 164 pages

Download or read book Tahar Ben Jelloun written by Ruth Amar and published by Edwin Mellen Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is an analysis of elements that build the narrative strategies of Tahar Ben Jelloun's work. On formal and thematic levels, the narrative sequence and its interwoven strands, manifest a story in perpetual becoming, in constant dissolution and evolution. In fact, the story is an infinite quest. It is told and repeated in various manners, with no possibility to be exhausted. This continual quest of the story is nourished by a lack expressed by the needs of the post-colonial Maghrebian novel for compensating a world that was, but is not any more. However, this lack conditions the production of the story. The text nourishes itself from the lack it produces. We could say then that Ben Jelloun's novel is not the production of a story but the emphasized production becoming itself Story: it is not the story that is told but the story of its production. On the one hand, this study redefines Ben Jelloun's narrative strategies, on the other hand, it focuses on the importance of the perpetual becoming, in all the aspects. manifested in his work, reflecting the difficulties of its hybrid nature, the function of the symbolical writing, the construction of characters and their contribution to the fragility of the story, the revelation of generative forces of a form and its rupture. Although other novels are taken into account, the focus of this study is on central texts like L'ecrivain public, Moha le fou, Moha le sage, Harrouda, L'enfant de sable, La nuit sacree, La Reclusion solitaire, Les yeux baisses.

Book In the flesh of the text

Download or read book In the flesh of the text written by Peter Broome and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2008 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This closely focused study of the inner movements, dynamic tensions and tactile richness of an intensely sensual but deeply searching poetry, is the first full-length monograph devoted to one of France¿s foremost contemporary woman poets. Marie-Claire Bancquart¿s work explores, primarily through the vulnerabilities and sensitivities of the body (hence this book¿s `carnal¿ title), the possibility of releasing a cry: a salvation of language and spirit from indifference, abstraction and dehumanisation, a celebration of a moment¿s reunion with the recreative vitality of the physical universe, an act of love in its most private yet cosmic expression. Bancquart has described her language as a `braille of the living¿: minimal, interrupted and riddled with obscurities and gaps of the unsayable, but apprehending the world and composing its significance in a singularly tactile translation. This study will appeal to those keen to discover one of the most original voices of present-day European poetry, the distinctive poetic resonances of one of its most self-aware and vibrant female sensibilities, and the provocative orientations of `new writing¿ traversed by the dilemmas and paradoxes of our own era.
