Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poetical Works of Sir Walter Scott, Vol. 8 In the Edinburgh Annual Register for the year 1809, Three Fragments were inserted, written in imitation of Living Poets. It must have been apparent, that, by these prolusions, nothing burlesque, or disrespectful, to the authors, was intended, but that they were offered to the public as serious, though certainly very imperfect, imitations of that style of composition, by which each of the writers is supposed to be distinguished. This book was released on 2018-01-03 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poetical Works of Sir Walter Scott, Bart, Vol. 1 The popularity of The Mimtrelsy of the Scottish Border - of which the first edition appeared about a century ago, and the finally corrected edition, with additional notes by Lockhart, some thirty years later - was almost as immediate and general as that of its great precursor, Bishop Percy's Reliques ofancient Poetry, first published in 1765. Its influence in stimulating the industry of ballad collectors was also remarkable, though it can hardly be maintained that in this respect it surpassed the Reliques, if it be borne in mind that but for the Reliques, Scott might never have prepared the illinatrelay. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poetical Works, Vol. 1: Of Sir Walter Scott, Bart Scott himself did. Jeffrey led the way in his first criticism by describing the Goblin Page as an excrescence, and ever Since it has been customary to say that his grotesque pranks have no comprehensible bearing on the action. Scott him self, in accordance with his resolution never to reply to criticism, humorously acquiesced when told that his Goblin had no sufficient raison d'etre but his supernatural machinery is really very closely jointed into the movement of human affairs in his story. The Goblin's pranks in the kitchen are episodical, but the incidents on which the story turns are all brought about by his help. His prying into the mighty book Of Michael Scott 5 his secret return of the wounded and stunned Deloraine to the castle 5 his luring away of the heir of Buccleuch to fall into English hands; his substitution of Oranstoun for Deloraine in the combat, are all necessary links in the main chain of events. The discourse between the River Spirit and the Mountain Spirit 5 the Ladye's knowledge Of this through her witchcraft; her determination to bafiie Fate with the help of Michael Scott's mighty book 5 the irony with which this instrument is turned against her 5 her vengeance on the Goblin whose impish tricks have marred her plans, are all essential parts Of the tale as told, and must all be taken seriously if we are to read it in the spirit in which it was conceived. It was meant to be a tale Of wonder as well as a tale Of rugged characters and picturesque adventures. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poetical Works of Sir Walter Scott, Bart, Vol. 3: Border Minstrelsy III The ballad of The Douglas Tragedy is one of the few, to which popular tradition has ascribed complete locality. The farm of Blackhouse, in Selkirkshire, is said to have been the scene of this melancholy event. There are the remains of a very ancient tower, adjacent to the farmhouse, in a wild and solitary glen, upon a torrent, named Douglas burn, which joins the Yarrow, after passing a craggy rock, called the Douglas craig. This wild scene, now a part of the Traquair estate, formed one of the most ancient possessions of the renowned family of Douglas; for Sir John Douglas, eldest son of William, the first Lord Douglas, is said to have sat, as baronial lord of Douglas burn, during his father's lifetime, in a parliament of Malcolm Canmore, held at Forfar. - Godscroft, vol. i. p. 20. The tower appears to have been square, with a circular turret at one angle, for carrying up the staircase, and for flanking the entrance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poetical Works of Sir Walter Scott, Bart, Vol. 5: Sir Tristrem IT is to be regretted that Sir Walter Scott has left no answer to an elaborate dissertation on his preface to Sir Tmistrem, which was appended to the first volume of the 8vo edition of Warton's History of English Poetry, published in 1824. It is probable. That this very valuable book, being put forth without the name of the Editor, or any distinct announcement of what his researches had added to the original narrative of Warton, had never attracted Sir Walter's notice. There is no copy of it in the Library at Abbotsford. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
