Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Selection From the Poetry of Samuel Daniel Michael Drayton: With an Introduction and Notes If any apology be required for bringing within the covers of a single volume a selection from both Daniel and Drayton, it must be offered in the circumstance that occasioned it. Having to lecture for the Oxford School of Literature upon the minor Elizabethan poets, I could find no text of either Daniel or Drayton to put into my pupils' hands. Of Drayton indeed Mr A. H. Bullen issued an excellent selection in 1883, but his book is now as scarce as the early copies, and almost as expensive. The only other modern texts I know are Hooper's reprint of the Poly-Olbion, and Morley's of the Barons' Wars and a few other pieces, a useful book, but neither representative nor discriminating enough for my purpose. Of Daniel there has been no edition since the two little volumes of 1718, and no selection but that of Mr John Morris in 1855 issued to subscribers at Bath. Under these circumstances, Mr Dent generously came to my help, and consented to publish a small book containing the choice poems of both writers. Book The Poetical Works of Sir David Lyndsay of the Mount Lyon King of Arms Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Poetical Works of Sir David Lyndsay of the Mount Lyon King of Arms Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint written by David Lindsay and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-12 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poetical Works of Sir David Lyndsay of the Mount, Lyon King of Arms, Vol. 1 of 2 The attention of this intelligent and polished kingdom has been drawn very much, during late times, to the simple, and rude, but natural lays of its ancient Poets. Meantime, the Critics of Edinburgh called for a more accurate edition of the Poems of Sir David Lyndsay than the public cuj oys, after the cor ruptions of two centuries and shelf. I obeyed this call, with the more alacrity as I had recently traced, with a different view, the history of the scoto-saxon language, and had cast a curious eye on the life and labours of Lyndsay, the Langelande of Scotland. The notions of Lyndsay, indeed, are very different from mine, both as a politician and a poet but, I perceived, that the republication of his poetry might be made the commodious vehicle of my own sentiments, with regard to the origin, the nature, and the introduction of the Teutonic tongue into Gaelic Scotland. In performing the task, which I had thus imposed on myself, I now lay before the reader a new edition of the Poetical Works of Sir David Lyndsay, corrected and enlarged, with the H istorie of Squyer Meldrum, and the Satyr-c of the Three Estaitis. By troubling several friends, and making many searches, I have been enabled to give some new notices of our satirist, who, to use Dryden's phrase, may be said to have lashed vice into reformation. I have endeavoured to adjust the chronology of Lyndsay' 3 several poems, which had never been before essayed. I have given an historical view of the Scottish speech, previous to his age, with observations on his language. I have settled the text of our vernacular poet, from a diligent collation of the oldest editions of his poems. And I have subj oined an appropriate Glossary which inciden tally demonstrates that the common source of Scottish speech is the Anglo - Saxon dialect of the Northumbrian kingdom. Download or read book The Poetical Decameron Vol 2 of 2 written by J. Payne Collier and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poetical Decameron, Vol. 2 of 2: Or Ten Conversations on English Poets and Poetry, Particularly of the Reigns of Elizabeth and James I Bourne. The last work which occupied us yesterday was a tract by Nicholas Breton. The pamphlet I now present contains a poem by him not found elsewhere, and not noticed by bibliographers. Elliot. I shall be glad to see it, because I have since taken the opportunity of reading some pastoral pieces by him in the reprint of "England's Helicon," and they give me a favourable opinion of his poetical talents. What title has the work in which the poem you refer to is inserted? Bourne. It is a novel, or rather one of those early romances which are seldom met with, and are never to be purchased but at a very high price: this is of peculiar rarity: it is called "Eliosto Libidinoso: Described in two Bookes," &c. "Written by Iohn Hynd. At London, Printed by Valentine Simmes," &c. 1606. If I tell you what a copy sold for at the Roxburgh sale, it will give you a notion of its value.
