But there seems no reason for rejecting entirely Johnson's statement, that a lady who was acquainted with Thomson's mother advised him to the journey, and promised some coun tenance or assistance which, at last, he never received. If, however, the person in question was, as I have seen it stated, Lady Grizel Baillie,1 a connection of Thomson's mother, the implied censure is, as will be seen, unjust. Thomson left Edinburgh without a degree, embarking at Leith in March, His mother, as we learn from the tender lines which he dedicated to her memory, saw him depart; they never met again.
