E'en here those enjoyments I'll prove, That from thee unceasingly flow, Though noise and confusion's above, And sorrow and sighing below. The vessel glides swiftly from shore, The sails are unfurl'd to the wind, The billows unfeelingly roar, And awaken the griefs of the mind. Farewell to thy wave-whiten'd shore! I go to the ends of the earth; I leave, to revisit no more. When far o'er the ocean away, When parted by billowy seas, Oh! fondly my mem'ry will stray O'er the scenes of my happier days. EARLY FRIENDS. And where are those we valued once, --When life was young and gay, --The friends of earlier years? they're gone To brighter worlds away. But still we love to think upon The time we've spent with them, And cherish feelings sweet, that grew On friendship's sacred stem. The verdant meads, the purling streams, The peaceful woodland bowers, Where once we wander'd carelessly, Recall those happy hours; Recall to mind, not to enjoy, For, ah! they're ever past; The joys of early friendship were By far too sweet to last: But shall not hearts, united here, By strongest ties of love, Still meet, when all life's ills shall close, In brighter worlds above? I'll mourn not then my griefs below, Nor all their baneful train, So I, at last, may meet above, My early friends again. STANZAS TO A FRIEND, IN RETURN FOR A PRESENT BEARING THE FOLLOWING INSCRIPTION: --"never Forget Me."
