A return to the criticism of Lucilius which he had begun in the opening of the satire. There is reason for believing that Horace has here employed the well-known device of includ ing himself in a criticism whose arraignment is principally intended for another. It is well known how far-reaching was the influence of Lucilius, not only in his own time, but through the first century A. D. It is probable, therefore, that as early as this fourth satire Horace foresaw that his severe handling of Lucilius would not go unchallenged, though he was perhaps not prepared for the storm of protest which required his lengthy defense in the tenth satire.
