Download or read book Claude L vi Strauss written by Patrick Wilcken and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2011-11-21 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Claude Lévi-Strauss, the 'father of modern anthropology' and author of the classic Tristes tropiques, was one of the most influential intellectuals of the second half of the twentieth century. Dislodging Sartre, Camus and de Beauvoir from the pinnacle of French intellectual life in the 1950s, he brought about a sea change in Western thought and inspired a generation of thinkers and writers, including Michel Foucault, Roland Barthes and Jacques Lacan with his structuralist theories. Lévi-Strauss's bohemian childhood and later studies of the emerging discipline of anthropology in the field and the university led him to mix with intellectuals, artists and poets from all over Europe. Tracing the evolution of his ideas through interviews with the man himself, research into his archives and conversations with contemporary anthropologists, Wilcken explores and explains Lévi-Strauss's theories, revealing an artiste manqué who infused his academic writing with an artistic and poetic sensibility.

Download or read book Aspects of Genre of and Type in Pre Modern Literary Cultures written by Bert Roest and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-02-01 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of studies is the result of a series of seminars organised by COMERS in 1996. The theme of generic problems has led to a variety of disciplines (Ancient Oriental, Classical, Medieval, Arabic, Middle Dutch...), of textual types (fables, historiography, comedies, Canon law...) and a variety of approaches (case studies, theoretical studies, confrontations between 'native' and 'critical' schemes...). This collection may be useful for comparative purposes, but also as an incentive for further studies on generic problems, theoretical as well as topical.
Download or read book Variance in Arabic Manuscripts written by Florian Sobieroj and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2016-05-24 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Arabic and Islamic studies, the subject of variance in general and that of textual variation in particular has not been investigated exhaustively so far. In the present book the variation in texts of the “closed transmission” will be studied, focusing on a small corpus of didactic and model poems, with a view to establishing what degree of text stability and change was allowed by the medium manuscript. Categories of variance (relating to work-titles, text, number of verses and their sequence, page-layout, context) and the means of controlling them in the manuscripts of the poems are identified and detailed descriptions of the copies are given. The monograph also includes a presentation of some major traits of the cultural background to the study of Arabic didactic poetry and of its dissemination in which memorization has played a crucial role. The intended readers, editors and other users of manuscripts, are helped to acquaint themselves with the methods employed in the manuscripts to control variation and they are given an overview of the large spectrum of Arabic didactic poetry and of its place in the traditional culture of learning in Islamicate societies.
