Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Select Poems of Thomas Gray Many editions of Gray have been published in the last fifty years, some of them very elegant, and some showing considerable editorial labor, but not one, so far as I am aware, critically exact either in text or in notes. No editor since Mathias (A.D. 1814) has given the 2d line of the Elegy as Gray wrote and printed it; while Mathias's mispronunciation of the 123d line has been copied by his successors, almost without exception. Other variations from the early editions are mentioned in the notes. It is a curious fact that the most accurate edition of Gray's collected poems is the editio princeps of 1768, printed under his own supervision. The first edition of the two Pindaric odes, The Progress of Poesy and The Bard (Strawberry-Hill, 1757), was printed with equal care, and the proofs were probably read by the poet. The text of the present edition has been collated, line by line, with that of these early editions, and in no instance I have adopted a later reading. All the MS. variations, and the various readings I have noted in the modern editions, are given in the notes. Pickering's edition of 1835, edited by Mitford, has been followed blindly in nearly all the more recent editions, and its many errors (see pp. 84 and 105, foot-notes) have been faithfully reproduced. Even its blunders in the "indenting" of the lines in the corresponding stanzas of the two Pindaric odes, which any careful proof-reader ought to have corrected, have been copied again and again - as in the Boston(1853) reprint of Pickering, the pretty little edition of Bickers & Son (London, n. d.), the fac-simile of the latter printed at our University Press, Cambridge(1866), etc. Of former editions of Gray, the only one very fully annotated is Mitford's (Pickering, 1835), already mentioned. I have drawn freely from that, correcting many errors, and also from Wakefield's and Mason's editions, and from Hales's notes (Longer English Poems, London, 1872) on the Elegy and the Pindaric odes. To all this material many original notes and illustrations have been added. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poetical Works of Thomas Gray: With Illustrations A new arrangement of the poems is made. In this particular, no edition has the poet's own authority, not only, because a good many of the poems are posthumous, but because some which appeared in his lifetime were not introduced into his own collections. In this edition, the poems are divided into those which were published during' Gray's life, and the Posthumous pieces, - with subdivisions of each of these two classes into the original poems, Eng lish and Latin, and the Translations. In each subdivision, the poems are arranged according to the dates of composi tion, as far as they could be determined. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selections From the Poems of Thomas Gray In 17 34 he went to Cambridge, where for a short time he was a pensioner at Pembroke Hall; but he soon went over as a fellow commoner to Peterhouse, his uncle Robert's college. In the following year Walpole put in an appearance at King's College. In September, 1738, Gray left Cambridge without taking a degree, but in 1743 he received from this institution the degree Of ll.b. He lived for six months at his father's house, with no settled plans for the future, although he had some thoughts of studying law. Fortunately for him, in March, 1739, Walpole proposed a tour of the Continent, agreeing generously to pay all expenses and at the same time to allow Gray perfect independence of action. It is interesting to note that Walpole made his will before starting, and had he died abroad, Gray would have been his sole legatee. It was during this tour that Walpole and Gray quarreled, and the latter returned home alone after an absence of two and a half years. Walpole generously took all the blame for the quarrel on his own shoulders, and the friendship was later renewed, and thereafter remained uninterrupted. The sketches of his travels written by Gray evince his good taste and his remarkable learn ing, even at this early period of his life. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of Thomas Gray, Vol. 1 In July 1757, he took his Odes to London, to be published. "I found Gray (says H. Walpole) in Town, last week. He brought his two Odes to be printed. I snatched them out of Dodsley's hands, and they are to be the first-fruits of my press." Although the genius of Gray was now "in its firm and mature age," and though his poetical reputation was deservedly celebrated; it is plain that these Odes were not favourably received. "His friends (he says) write to him, that they do not succeed," and several amusing criticisms on them are mentioned in the Letters. Yet there were not wanting some better judges who admired them. They had received the judicious and valuable approbation of Mason and of Hurd; and if Gray felt any pleasure in the poem which Garrick wrote in their praise, he must have been yet more gratified, when Warburton, while he bestowed on them his honest applause, shewed his indignation at those who condemned, without being able to understand them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of Thomas Gray in Prose and Verse, Vol. 1 of 4: Poems, Journals, and Essays IT is a great privilege to be entrusted with the collee tion of the writings of a classic, but the more pleasure is united with such a labour, the heavier is the responsibility. The preparation of this issue of the entire Works of Thomas Gray has been no holiday task, and I relinquish it to the printers with no certainty that the aim of so much assiduous labour has been reached. In the first place, I have to record a disappointment. In undertaking to collect for the first time the whole writings of Gray, I was buoyed up by a sanguine hope that I should be able to add very considerably to the bulk of those writings. Tradition has whispered for the last forty years of unprinted verses and unexamined letters by the exquisite author of the Elegy, and it was my con fident expectation that I should be able to unearth the majority of these. For the last four years, by all the public and private means in my power, I have been endeavouring to lay my hand upon these manuscripts. But I am bound to say that I have slowly become convinced that no such treasures exist, and that we know the limits of Gray's literary production. Again and again I have seemed on the brink of discovery, and each time the prose has proved a cloud, the poems a mirage. Of matter actually unprinted before, in some form or other, these volumes contain comparatively little. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Gray was born on 26 December 1716 in Cornhill in London. His father was a scrivener and his mother a milliner. He was the fifth of twelve children and the only one to survive. With his father becoming mentally unwell and abusing his wife she left with Thomas in tow for a safer life. Thomas was sent to Eton, where two of his uncles worked, and although he was a delicate and scholarly child with an aversion to sports he found it suited him. Whilst there he made three close friends; Horace Walpole, son of the Prime Minister Robert Walpole; Thomas Ashton, and Richard West. The four prided themselves on their style, humour, and appreciation of beauty. They were called the "quadruple alliance." In 1734 Gray went up to Peterhouse, Cambridge. Although his family wished him to study law he spent most of his time reading classical and modern literature, and playing Vivaldi and Scarlatti on the harpsichord for relaxation. In 1738 he accompanied his old school-friend Walpole on his Grand Tour of Europe. It was Walpole who later helped publish Gray's poetry. Gray began to seriously write poems in 1742, mainly after his close friend Richard West died. He moved to Cambridge and began a programme of literary study. Gray was a brilliant bookworm, a quiet, abstracted, dreaming scholar. He became a Fellow first of Peterhouse, and later of Pembroke College where he had moved after the students at Peterhouse played a prank on him. It is thought that Gray began writing his masterpiece, the Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard, in the graveyard of St Giles parish church in Stoke Poges, Buckinghamshire, in 1742. After several years of leaving it unfinished, he completed it in 1750. When Gray sent it to Walpole, Walpole sent off the poem as a manuscript and it appeared in many magazines. Gray then published the poem himself and received the credit he was due. The poem was a literary sensation. Its reflective, calm and stoic tone was greatly admired, and despite the piracy it was imitated, quoted and translated into Latin and Greek. Gray spent most of his life as a scholar in Cambridge, and only travelled again later in life. Although he wrote little he is regarded by some as the foremost English-language poet of the mid-18th century. In 1757, he was offered the post of Poet Laureate, which he refused. Gray was extremely self-critical and feared failure. He once wrote that he feared his collected works would be "mistaken for the works of a flea." Gray came to be known as one of the "Graveyard poets" of the late 18th century, along with Oliver Goldsmith, William Cowper, and Christopher Smart. Gray perhaps knew these men, sharing ideas about death, mortality, and the finality of death. In 1768, after the death of Lawrence Brockett the Regius chair of Modern History at Cambridge, a sinecure which carried a salary of 400, fell vacant and Gray secured the position. Thomas Gray died on 30 July 1771 in Cambridge, and was buried beside his mother in the churchyard of Stoke Poges, the setting for his famous Elegy.
