Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poems of John Milton, Vol. 1 of 2: With Notes Brevity and terseness are the very soul of annotation a note should not contain a superfluous word Nature not having bestowed on me copiousness of language, my style is brief and condensed, hence I rarely copy the notes of others, as I can express their matter in fewer words. In reality however the greater part of these notes was written from the resources of my own mind, and it was, in general, only in dubious cases that I referred to the commentators. But whenever I have been indebted to any of them, I have given his name so also in the parallel passages, though I had my self noticed the greater number of them, I give the initials of the critics who first observed them. With respect to these passages, nothing surely can be further from my mind than the idea of making Milton a centoist; but I think it a most agreeable employment for a philosophic mind to trace how far a great poet may have been indebted for ideas or language to the authors he had read, and I quote no others. For a. Similar reason I have given the various readings to Comus and other poems from Milton's own manuscript. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Select Minor Poems of John Milton I have, therefore, condensed, for this volume, the His torical Introduction to my volume of Selections from Paradise Lost by omitting all the portions not necessary to the interpretation of the poems here included, and have added a general Introduction to the Minor Poems and also a special Introduction to each poem, together with critical notes, which aim to direct attention to the poems as literary productions. The various Introduc tions should be studied with some care, as a preparation for the study of certain classes of literature. Then the poems should be made the object of study, the references to the Historical Introduction and the Glossary being used only when the failure of the pupil's memory ren ders it necessary. Book The Lyric and Dramatic Poems of John Milton Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Lyric and Dramatic Poems of John Milton Classic Reprint written by Martin W. Sampson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lyric and Dramatic Poems of John Milton The purpose of this book is to provide a new approach to Milton, by giving for the first time in one volume the text of all of Milton's English lyric and dramatic poems, annotated for school or college use. To the minor poems (including Comus) so frequently edited, I have added Samson Agonistes, in the belief that an introduction to the study of Milton may more appropriately lead through the lyric and dramatic poems than through the minor poems and selections from Paradise Lost. The sublimity of Milton, as revealed in the great epic, is not readily felt by a young student, who may, however, gain from Miltons tragedy a sense of the poets greatness, as distinguished from those qualities which the minor poems so amply illustrate. The first edition of the minor poems appeared in 1645, and was reprinted in 1673. Comus appeared independently in 1637; Lycidas in 1638, in a volume of memorial verse by several hands; and Samson Agonistes in 1671, in a volume with Paradise Regained. These editions, together with the Cambridge Ms., which is chiefly in Milton's own hand, are the authorities for any text. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poetical Works of John Milton, Vol. 1: From the d104 of Dr. Newton; With a Critical Essay From early youth, Milton seems to have been characterised by a lofty and elevated mind. Educated in a distinguished seat of learning, and deeply imbued with the classical literature which at that period, perhaps, was studied with more ardour than it has ever been since, he soared to no common height in his juvenile exercises, and attained an excellence in Latin poetry which is a topic of admiration to his biographers. The intrinsic value of his performances in this class has, indeed, been differently estimated; but it is certain that they bespeak an imagination fed with no trivial or vulgar ideas, and a soul big with high resolves, and the anticipation of future fame. Various passages in his Latin poems have been adduced as denoting the seeds of great designs which then lurked in his mind but none are more striking than the fol lowing lines of an address in English verse to his Native. Language, delivered at a college exercise, when he was nineteen years old[5. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poetical Works of John Milton, Vol. 1: With a Memoir, and Critical Remarks on His Genius and Writings Milton now moved to Little Britain, and thereafter to Artillery Walk, Bun hill Fields. In the meanwhile he had made great friends with a well-educated and intelligent Quaker, named Thomas Ellwood, who read to him in his hours of solitude, and was entrusted with his literary plans and ambitions. It was to Ellwood that Milton first mentioned his Paradise Lost, which was almost completed when the Plague broke out in 1665, and Ellwood hurried his friend into safety in the pretty little village of Chalfont St. Giles, in Buckinghamshire, where the cottage of his sojourn is still preserved intact. Here Ellwood read the ms. Of the greatest epic poem in the English language, and added to his praise the suggestion that much had been said in the poem of Paradise Lost, but still more remained to be said of Paradise Found. This remark was, no doubt, the germ from which sprang the later and less successful of the two poems with which Milton's name is most popularly connected.
