He supplies his pieces with a beginning, middle, and end. N O superfluity enters into their' unified form. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1633, when The Temple was first published, many notable Christians have testified of their love for George Herbert's poetry. The great nineteenth-century preacher C. H. Spurgeon and his wife would sometimes read Herbert's poetry together on Sunday evenings. Richard Baxter wrote, Herbert speaks to God like one that really believeth a God, and whose business in the world is most with God. C. S. Lewis described Herbert as a man who seemed to me to excel all the authors I had ever read in conveying the very quality of life as we actually live it from moment to moment . . . Regrettably, as the years have passed, Herbert's poetry has been increasingly neglected outside the academy. Many who would love Herbert have never even heard of him. Others feel intimidated by his poetry, fearing that they do not have the education necessary to understand what Herbert has written. In this book, Jimmy Scott Orrick has made the poetry of George Herbert accessible even to those who have had no experience reading poetry. In addition to providing thorough notes for each poem, Orrick also gives basic pointers about how to read poetry. Why not follow C. H. Spurgeon's example and have a page or two of good George Herbert on your Sunday evenings? Those who follow this prescription will be deeply enriched for having spent A Year with George Herbert.

Book The Complete English Poems

Download or read book The Complete English Poems written by George Herbert and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2004-10-07 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Herbert combined the intellectual and the spiritual, the humble and the divine, to create some of the most moving devotional poetry in the English language. His deceptively simple verse uses the ingenious arguments typical of seventeenth-century 'metaphysical' poets, and unusual imagery drawn from musical structures, the natural world and domestic activity to explore a mosaic of Biblical themes. From the wit and wordplay of 'The Pulley' and the formal experimentation of 'Easter Wings' and 'Paradise', to the intense, highly personal relationship between man and God portrayed in 'The Collar' and 'Redemption', the works collected here show the transcendental power of divine love.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English Works of George Herbert, Vol. 6 of 6: Bemerton Poems N one Oi the closing poems of the preceding Group, the crosse, Herbert complains that ill health is crippling his powers and rendering him unfit for work. Undoubtedly illness had much to do with the restlessness and despondency which the poems of Group IX describe. The fear. Of it had long been In his mind, and was expressed as early as 1622 in that letter to his mother from which I have already quoted. During the Crisis period it comes out in the priesthood as an other reason for hesitation when he is just coming to a decision. Much lesse think we it meet to seek the recommendation of the Muses for that which himself was confident to have been inspired by a diviner breath then flows from Helicon. Book A Reading of George Herbert Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Reading of George Herbert Classic Reprint written by Rosemond Tuve and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-07-28 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Reading of George Herbert Because of the simultaneous publication of this book in both England and America, a note is perhaps necessary regarding certain critical issues which are in it assumed to be familiar matters of controversy, but which may be (as such) very much more familiar to American than to British readers. Some of the most vigorous and most influential modern literary criticism in America - often that concerned with 17th/century writers - shows the attitudes, presup/ positions, or controversial positions herein noted as 'modern' pos1t1ons and variously supported or attacked. These sets of ideas cannot be equated with 'the New Criticism', although most of the 'new Critics' take some or all of the positions discussed. The quickest way to refer a reader to controversies so lively and new points of view so acutely and voluminously defended that they have gone far to transform the practice of criticism as well as the teaching of literature, is to cite the critiques and bibliography m R. W. Stallman, Critiques and Essays in Criticism, 1920 48, New York (ronald Press), 1949, the appendixes in Cleanth Brooks, The Well Wrought Urn, New York (reynal and Hitchcock), 1947, and relevant sections and bibliographies in R. Wellek and A. Warren, Theory of Literature, New York (harcourt Brace), 1949. It would be neither rewarding nor practicable to attach specific references to critical attitudes growing steadily more pervasive and issues growing steadily sharper, on both sides of the Atlantic, when these arise in the critical discussions which follow. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English Works of George Herbert, Vol. 5 of 6 The beginning of the Bemerton life brought to Herbert a joyful sense of attainment. The hopes of many years seemed now about to be realized. The great deed was done. He was no longer cum bored with political, social, or scholarly ties. He and God were to be alone, and his one interest henceforth was to be the priestly ofice. He set himself with characteristic energy to search out all the subtle significance which his present tasks might contain. His life should be as intellectually ordered, as coherent, as beautiful, as compact with rich suggestion, as his verse had been before. He codified his work; he studied from day to day what were the best ways of performing each petty portion of his stately Office. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Works of George Herbert, Vol. 1: Newly Arranged and Annotated and Considered in Relation to His Life It would be a mistake, however, to suppose that an elaborate edition of a subordinate poet is exons able only on grounds of personal devotion. There are public reasons too. The tendencies of an age appear more distinctly in its writers of inferior rank than in those of commanding genius. These latter tell of past and future as well as of the years in which they live. They are for all time. But on the sensitive, responsive souls, of less creative power, current ideals record themselves with clear ness. Whoever, then, values literary history will be glad to seek out the gentle and incomplete poet, be willing for a while to dwell dispassionately in his narrow surroundings, without praise or blame will examine his numbered thoughts, and never forget that even restricted times and poets work out neces sary elements of human nature and appropriately further its growth. A small writer so studied be comes large. So would I study Herbert, laying chief stress ou his psychological, social, and liter ary significance, and markn his connection with the world-movements of his age. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Complete Works in Verse and Prose of George Herbert, Vol. 3 of 3: Prose There is no date in the Bodleian or Williams ms, and the ms. Date of 1632, inserted in the undated edition of The Temple, ' does not conflict with the printed one of 1633, if the double reckoning be regarded that is, that it would be 1632 up to 25th March, or some weeks after his death. These Facts of the letter-date to Nicholas Ferrar, and the proving' of the Will of his niece, and disposal of the received legacy, render 3d March 1632 an impossibility. It is unfortunate that neither Dorothy Vaughan's Will nor Herbert's is dated, the latter being simply 'a°. D°. And proved 12th March 1632, 1632 - 3, or in modern chronology 1633; but that we must place Her bert's death at end of February or on 1st March 1633.
