Book The Birmingham Quean

    Book Details:
  • Author : S. A. M. Trainor
  • Publisher : Lulu.com
  • Release : 2010-06
  • ISBN : 0953832821
  • Pages : 583 pages

Download or read book The Birmingham Quean written by S. A. M. Trainor and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2010-06 with total page 583 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are to believe there was a time when The Birmingham Quean was just a poem: a mock-epic burlesque in which a fake pound coin told how she was won in a game of darts by a drag-queen called Britannia Spears. It parodied Pope ́s The Rape of the Lock, Byron ́s Don Juan and an anonymous eighteenth century novel, The Birmingham Counterfeit. The transformation of this bit of picaresque doggerel into the sprawling work barely contained by this cover is the central mystery of a ludic novel. It mirrors the unlikely story of a dirty little settlement of nailers and cutlers becoming the principle city of the Industrial Revolution by flooding the Restoration economy with counterfeit coins. What remains is an absurd scholarly edition of a poem recast as a futuristic dystopia in which nothing is authentic. It is also the tale of an impossible love affair that uncovers an impossible text by an impossible author. It is as strange, ironic, sombre, flashy and anarchic as the city to which it owes its existence.

Book Poetry and British Nationalisms in the Bardic Eighteenth Century

Download or read book Poetry and British Nationalisms in the Bardic Eighteenth Century written by Jeff Strabone and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-10-26 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a radical new theory of the role of poetry in the rise of cultural nationalism. With equal attention to England, Scotland, and Wales, the book takes an Archipelagic approach to the study of poetics, print media, and medievalism in the rise of British Romanticism. It tells the story of how poets and antiquarian editors in the British nations rediscovered forgotten archaic poetic texts and repurposed them as the foundation of a new concept of the nation, now imagined as a primarily cultural formation. It also draws on legal and ecclesiastical history in drawing a sharp contrast between early modern and Romantic antiquarianisms. Equally a work of literary criticism and history, the book offers provocative new theorizations of nationalism and Romanticism and new readings of major British poets, including Allan Ramsay, Thomas Gray, and Samuel Taylor Coleridge.

Book The Cambridge Companion to Berkeley

Download or read book The Cambridge Companion to Berkeley written by Kenneth Winkler and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-12-19 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Berkeley is one of the greatest and most influential modern philosophers. In defending the immaterialism for which he is most famous, he redirected modern thinking about the nature of objectivity and the mind's capacity to come to terms with it. Along the way, he made striking and influential proposals concerning the psychology of the senses, the workings of language, the aim of science, and the scope of mathematics. In this Companion volume, a team of distinguished authors not only examines Berkeley's achievements, but also his neglected contributions to moral and political philosophy, his writings on economics and development, and his defense of religious commitment and religious life.

Book Print Visuality and Gender in Eighteenth Century Satire

Download or read book Print Visuality and Gender in Eighteenth Century Satire written by Katherine Mannheimer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-05-23 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study interprets eighteenth-century satire’s famous typographical obsession as a fraught response to the Enlightenment’s "ocularcentric" epistemological paradigms, as well as to a print-cultural moment identified by book-historians as increasingly "visual" — a moment at which widespread attention was being paid, for the first time, to format, layout, and eye-catching advertising strategies. On the one hand, the Augustans were convinced of the ability of their elaborately printed texts to function as a kind of optical machinery rivaling that of the New Science, enhancing readers’ physical but also moral vision. On the other hand, they feared that an overly scrutinizing gaze might undermine the viewer’s natural faculty for candor and sympathy, delight and desire. In readings of Pope, Swift, and Montagu, Mannheimer shows how this distrust of the empirical gaze led to a reconsideration of the ethics, and most specifically the gender politics, of ocularcentrism. Whereas Montagu effected this reconsideration by directly satirizing both the era’s faith in the visual and its attendant publishing strategies, Pope and Swift pursued their critique via print itself: thus whether via facing-page translations, fictional editors, or disingenuous footnotes, these writers sought to ensure that typography never became either a mere tool of (or target for) the objectifying gaze, but rather that it remained a dynamic and interactive medium by which readers could learn both to see and to see themselves seeing.

Book Johnson s Critical Presence

Download or read book Johnson s Critical Presence written by Philip Smallwood and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Johnson's Critical Presence demonstrates how Johnson's criticism has for long been divided from the issues of modern criticism by historical narratives that have marked the progress of criticism from 'classic to romantic'. The image of Johnson constructed by his immediate antagonists has been preserved by the routines of historical representation, and mediated to the present day, most recently, by the characterizations of 'radical theory'. By an in-depth analysis of major works by Johnson, Smallwood argues that the historicization of eighteenth-century criticism can be more fruitfully understood in the light of the 'dialogic' and 'translational' historiography of such thinkers as Collingwood and Ricoeur, and that the contexts of Johnson's criticism must include the poetry he read as well as the theories he espoused. In this way the book reinstates Johnson's 'presence' as critic while displacing the 'history of ideas' as the leading paradigm for conceptualizing the history of criticism.
