Book The Indonesian Plywood Industry

Download or read book The Indonesian Plywood Industry written by R. Fenton and published by Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. This book was released on 1996 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indonesia is the world's largest producer of logs from tropical rainforest. The logs are primarily used in the plywood industry which grew from virtually nothing in 1979 to become, within a decade, first, the greatest producer of tropical plywood, then the greatest exporter of all plywood, and finally, large enough to dominate all wood-panel exports. At the same time, the forests are to be sustainable by the year 2000 and so is subject to intense conservationist attention. This study takes a meticulous look at the data available and examines the value-added and economic rent methodologies used in the existing literature, and concludes that the data are highly inaccurate and the analyses made earlier are unrealistically simplistic.

Book excerpt: Indonesia has the second largest expanse of tropical moist forests in the world: about 78 per cent of its land mass is classified as forest land. These forests are important to Indonesia for their economic and social significance and to the global community for their biodiversity and as a carbon sink. The main pressures on the forests come from logging, degradation from forest concessions and plantations, rural consumption, and forest fires. This case study is one of six evaluations of the implementation of the World Bank's 1991 Forest Strategy.

Book Indonesia s Industrial Transformation

Download or read book Indonesia s Industrial Transformation written by Hal Hill and published by Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. This book was released on 1997 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indonesia, the world's fourth most populous nation, has experienced a remarkable economic transformation over the past 30 years. In the mid 1960s it was one of the poorest countries in the developing world, but by the 1990s it had joined the group of Asian 'tiger' economies. This set of essays examines the record of industrialization, which has been central to Indonesia's rapid development. Successive sections provide an overview of the industrialization process, case studies of selected industries, the contribution of foreign investment and technological development, the role of small-medium industry, and a range of industrial policy issues. Drawing on the country's much improved statistical base, this empirically oriented volume highlights both the achievements of the 'New Order' regime and the many challenges which lie ahead.

Book The Global Economics of Forestry

Download or read book The Global Economics of Forestry written by William F. Hyde and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-05-23 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the economic and biological pattern of forest development from initial settlement and harvest activity at the natural forest frontier to modern industrial forest plantations. It builds from diagrams describing three discrete stages of forest development, and then discusses the management and policy implications associated with each, supporting its observations with examples and data from six continents and from both developed and developing countries. It shows that characteristic distinctions between the three stages make forestry unusual in natural resource management and that effective policy requires different, even contrasting, decisions at each stage. William F. Hyde’s comprehensive discussion covers a wide range of issues, including the impacts of both specific forest policies and broader macroeconomic policies, the unique requirements of current issues such as global warming, biodiversity and tourism, and the complexities of the different forest products industries. Concluding chapters review the roles of the newer institutional landowners, of smaller private and farm landowners, and of public agencies. This highly-original volume reaches far beyond forest economics; it explains what forestry can do for regional development and environmental conservation and what policies designed for other sectors and the macro-economy can do for forestry.

Book Global Competitiveness and Industrial Growth in Taiwan and the Philippines

Download or read book Global Competitiveness and Industrial Growth in Taiwan and the Philippines written by Cheng-Tian Kuo and published by University of Pittsburgh Pre. This book was released on 2010-11-23 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kuo contrasts the economic evolutions of Taiwan and the Philippines as the product of government and industry relations. The two nations shared many economic similarities-yet Taiwan moved from clientelism to state corporatism, while in the Philippines clientelism remains deeply entrenched. Kuo's case studies in the textile, plywood, and electronics industries support these general arguments. He finds that clientelism invariably leads to economic problems, while a laissez-faire approach is unpredictable. The best formula for industrial success in a developing nation is close cooperation between business and government.
