Book excerpt: This book, The Playground, is actually a childrens story. When I saw there was a need to explain to my fourteen year old daughter, spiritual principles in the simplest of ways, I referred her to the elements found within a playground. I thought it would be the easiest way for her to retain information if she drew an analogy from each element of play and it worked. Here I use spiritual applications of the slide, a swing, a see saw, some monkey bars, a sand box, a round a bout, a barrel, and finally a balance beam to illustrate metaphysically spiritual terms in the simplest of manners. Realizing myself how effective this is as a teaching tool, on how we relate to God, I also wanted to share this with my readers. Socialization, parental guidance, and leadership are some more of the topics addressed, along with more wonderfully crafted poems to strengthen ones faith.

Book Munich Playground

Download or read book Munich Playground written by Ernest R. Pope and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-19 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dateline 1941: Hitler's forces have smashed into western Europe, defeated France, threatened England, and attacked Russia. Many people think of them as "an awe-inspiring group of ascetic, fanatic, and inhuman supermen." Ernest R. Pope knew all too well how illusory this idea was. As senior correspondent for Reuters in Munich from 1936-1941, American Ernest Pope saw the cruel and outrageous behavior of Nazis in their native habitat. In Munich they ran wild, let their hair down, and indulged in every fantasy money and power could avail them. Pope has all the gossip...and the confirmed stories. "I have seen the leading actors in the Nazi tragedy, playing their parts on the Bavarian stage. Long before the climax--the outbreak of the war--I knew what the denouement in Hitler's theater would be." Pope knew, saw, and/or interviewed all the top Nazis and dozens of lower-level officials, including some of Hitler's security. He saw the Nazis for what they were: a corrupt, debauched, all-too-human menace.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sacred Playgrounds explores the wisdom of camping ministry for Christian education and faith formation, examining its rich history and fundamental characteristics with compelling stories, groundbreaking research, and theological grounding. Christian summer camp is an integral part of the ecology of faith formation in North America, though it has received surprisingly little attention in the scholarly community until now. Camping ministry is often dismissed as simple fun and games or a brief spiritual high that does not last. However, camp experiences often serve as deeply relational and immersive faith experiences that have lasting impacts on participants. Five fundamental characteristics combine dynamically in the effective camp experience: participatory, faith-centered, safe space, relational, and unplugged from home. Together, they open the space for participants to consider new understandings of God, to have time for deep self-reflection, and to build intentional Christian community. These camp experiences are essential components in a larger ecology of faith formation, including the home and congregation. The insight and evidence presented in this book demonstrate that the contributions of camping ministry must be taken seriously among scholars, Christian educators, and ministry professionals.

Book KaBOOM

Download or read book KaBOOM written by Darell Hammond and published by Rodale Books. This book was released on 2011-04-26 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: KaBOOM! is the powerful, uplifting journey of a man who grew up in a group home with his seven brothers and sisters and went on to build a world-class nonprofit that harnesses the power of community to improve the lives of children. In 1995, Darell Hammond read an article in the Washington Post about an unthinkable tragedy: Two young children suffocated in a car on a hot summer day in southeast Washington, DC. The story indicated that the children had nowhere to play; in the absence of a playground, they had climbed into an abandoned car. Reading the article fueled Hammond's sense of injustice, and his life's mission came into focus. Hammond founded KaBOOM!, a national nonprofit that provides communities with tools, resources, and guidance to build and renovate playgrounds and playspaces. In some of the toughest and poorest neighborhoods in North America, 2,000 barren spaces have been transformed by KaBOOM! and more than a million volunteers and community members into kid-designed, fun, and imaginative places to play. This is the story of a man with a vision, a man who believes that play is the best natural resource in a creative economy and that kids need more of it. Play is not a luxury but a necessity for their lives. Through hard work, commitment, and the conviction that access to a safe play environment is the fundamental right of all children, Hammond built an organization that has touched the lives of countless children and families. Hammond's story demonstrates how one idealist can change the world and how small, civic-minded steps create a ripple effect that can transform communities and eventually the world at large.
