Download or read book The Play of the Sibyl Cassandra Classic Reprint written by Georgiana Goddard King and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-27 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Play of the Sibyl Cassandra The Auto of the Sibyl Cassandra, written by Gil Vicente1 for performance on Christ mas Eve in 1503, marks a moment of transition in the history of the Peninsular drama. vestiges of the liturgical drama appear, for reasons which shall be con sidered; the new - fangled pastoral, first played just ten years before, by Juan del Encina, before the Duke of Alva, is here apparent and acclimated; a theme more or less humanistic and dear to the early Renaissance here mingles with a strain of pure folk-lore. The art is quattrocento in essence but serene and sure, and Cassandra the sibyl is own sister to N eroccio's sibyl on the pavement at Siena and Perugino's sibyls in the Cambio at Perugia. Book excerpt: In The Sibyl Cassandra: A Christmas Play with the Insanity and Sanctity of Five Centuries Past, the sixteenth century play by Gil Vicente is translated in full, and provided with a full introduction by Cheryl Folkins McGinniss. Cassandra, the heroine, is a young woman who rebels against the expectations and roles that society has placed upon her. Her refusal to marry causes outrage and chaos. Amid song and dance, she is accused of blasphemy and madness until the nativity scene is magically revealed. All is restored through Christ--or is it? The translator has "unpacked" this fascinating drama from an ancestral trunk for its renewed display and enjoyment during the Christmas season.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sibyl, 1904 It is finished at last. The task of putting out a book that would modestly endeavor to meet the expectations of every student has not been an easy one. Yet we have derived much enjoyment and valuable experi ence therefrom. We have striven to compose a book that would exceed its worthy predecessors and that would define a course which others in the future might develop and improve. We trust that we have succeeded in this. And in no small measure the success of our, effort is due to our hustling, tactful, and resourceful business manager, Mr. B. F. Shively. Among our many experiences we have learned that college life is too strenuous for the students to give such a literary undertaking the thuro consideration and attention it deserves. We regret this condition of affairs, but trust that the future editors of the sibyl will receive the hearty sup port of the student body. The sibyl, we maintain, is not an enterprise of the Juniors alone, but is an affair in which the Whole college should have a vital interest. Book Sibyl Spencer Classic Reprint

Download or read book Sibyl Spencer Classic Reprint written by James Kent and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sibyl Spencer "But most the ancients should engage And fire my heart with classic rage, Models of style, to nature true With boldest art her form they drew." Anonymous. The pious bounty of the founders of the congregational church at D - had endowed it with some fifty acres of rich meadow land, and had built for their pastor a large square house. This house stood directly on the principal street, and was separated from the church by the graveyard. Neither of the two buildings was painted, and the cypress shingles with which their sides were covered, had grown gray with age. The mossy head-stones in the churchyard, and the gigantic elms which overshadowed them, gave an air of antiquity uncommon in America. The ground at the rear of the parsonage sloped gradually towards a little brook. Groups of trees had been allowed to remain, permitting vistas of the distant hills, and throwing long shadows, pleasant to the eye, on this hot, sultry June morning. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Casa del Deán in Puebla, Mexico, is one of few surviving sixteenth-century residences in the Americas. Built in 1580 by Tomás de la Plaza, the Dean of the Cathedral, the house was decorated with at least three magnificent murals, two of which survive. Their rediscovery in the 1950s and restoration in 2010 revealed works of art that rival European masterpieces of the early Renaissance, while incorporating indigenous elements that identify them with Amerindian visual traditions. Extensively illustrated with new color photographs of the murals, The Casa del Deán presents a thorough iconographic analysis of the paintings and an enlightening discussion of the relationship between Tomás de la Plaza and the indigenous artists whom he commissioned. Penny Morrill skillfully traces how native painters, trained by the Franciscans, used images from Classical mythology found in Flemish and Italian prints and illustrated books from France—as well as animal images and glyphic traditions with pre-Columbian origins—to create murals that are reflective of Don Tomás’s erudition and his role in evangelizing among the Amerindians. She demonstrates how the importance given to rhetoric by both the Spaniards and the Nahuas became a bridge of communication between these two distinct and highly evolved cultures. This pioneering study of the Casa del Deán mural cycle adds an important new chapter to the study of colonial Latin American art, as it increases our understanding of the process by which imagery in the New World took on Christian meaning.

In this, the sixth volume of the Sibyl, our chief purpose has been to set forth the crowning glories of sixty years. We have also endeavored to faithfully portray college life in Otterbein today, that it may interest not only present students, but those who mav enter her sacred halls in future years. In judging our feeble efforts, we hope to receive the same fairness which we have endeavored to use throughout this volume.
