Book The Planning Planting of Little Gardens Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Planning Planting of Little Gardens Classic Reprint written by George Dillistone and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-14 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Planning Planting of Little Gardens The object of this book is to assist the owners of small garden plots to determine the best ways of laying them out, so that the greatest possible use may be made of the area, and the most picturesque effects obtained therein. Much general information has also been introduced, indicating the uses to which the garden may be put when it is made, and also what can be grown therein. It was considered unnecessary to crowd the pages with a great many detailed cultural directions or descriptions of plants, and an effort has been made rather to indicate the objective to be aimed at, and the course to pursue to attain it, than to produce a compendium of gardening lore generally. Having decided of what the garden is to consist, readers will do well to look for books treating more intimately with the particular garden feature or features they have decided to adopt. To those who desire information on rose-growing I would commend Rose Growing Made Easy, by E. T. Cook; for information on rock gardening, The Rock Garden, by E. H. Jenkins. Fruit Growing for Beginners, by F. W. Harvey, will be found useful to those desiring to garden for practical ends; and whether the garden is large or small. Book Home Grounds Their Planning and Planting Classic Reprint

Download or read book Home Grounds Their Planning and Planting Classic Reprint written by L. H. Bailey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-16 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Home Grounds, Their Planning and Planting It is not sufficient to have a. Good number of plants: they should be placed with good taste. So this little book is about this subject - how to choose, arrange, and plant the home place. As every place is different, so is every one a problem by itself; but as there are controlling motives and regulations for painting and for music and for good writing, so are there certain guides to the disposition of the planting. The large and pretentious places - the estates - will have the advantage of the landscape architect's advice; all places profit greatly by such advice, often the small places even more than the large ones, yet the middle-class homes usually do not employ professional talent. This booklet cannot take the place of the artist who makes a study of a particular property. I know, however, that the artist will not be em ployed, perhaps even when he is most needed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a time of climate change and mass extinction, how we garden matters more than ever: “An outstanding and deeply passionate book.” —Marc Bekoff, author of The Emotional Lives of Animals Plenty of books tell home gardeners and professional landscape designers how to garden sustainably, what plants to use, and what resources to explore. Yet few examine why our urban wildlife gardens matter so much—not just for ourselves, but for the larger human and animal communities. Our landscapes push aside wildlife and in turn diminish our genetically programmed love for wildness. How can we get ourselves back into balance through gardens, to speak life's language and learn from other species? Benjamin Vogt addresses why we need a new garden ethic, and why we urgently need wildness in our daily lives—lives sequestered in buildings surrounded by monocultures of lawn and concrete that significantly harm our physical and mental health. He examines the psychological issues around climate change and mass extinction as a way to understand how we are short-circuiting our response to global crises, especially by not growing native plants in our gardens. Simply put, environmentalism is not political; it's social justice for all species marginalized today and for those facing extinction tomorrow. By thinking deeply and honestly about our built landscapes, we can create a compassionate activism that connects us more profoundly to nature and to one another.

Download or read book A Handbook for Planning and Planting Small Home Grounds written by Warren H. Manning and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook for Planning and Planting Small Home Grounds: With a List of Native and Commonly Cultivated Plants That Are Represented in the Collection Upon the Stout Manual Training School Grounds The Stout Manual Training School, a complete system of travelling libraries, a travelling art gallery, with the collection of plants referred to and described in this handbook, and the other educational influences grouped about the school and leading out from it, have all grown out of the desire of a citizen of Menomonie to benefit a region wherein he has lived and which has contributed to his successful business career. It is worthy of record, too, that the town wherein this school is located, its leading citizens, and especially its women, have heartily cooperated with their benefactor in the rebuilding of the school since its total destruction by fire in 1897, the women alone agreeing to raise the money required for grading the grounds. Menomonie, Wisconsin, is a city of about 7, 000 inhabitants, on the Chicago St. Paul line of the Chicago Northwestern Railway systems. Also on a branch of the Chicago, Milwaukee St. Paul Railroad. Its principal industries are the manufacture of lumber and brick. There are extensive deposits of clay also found near by, suitable for the manufacture of pottery and porcelain. But there is a way you can delight in the fragrance and beauty of flowers after dark: Plant a night-blooming garden! Also known as moon gardens, night-blooming gardens are expressly designed for evening enjoyment. While attractive during the day, they take on a whole new look and feel at dusk, casting a magical spell. Pale-colored flowers reflect light from the setting sun and the rising moon, shining luminously and giving the garden an almost mystical glow. Fragrances seem more alluring. Silvery foliage shimmers tremulously as the evening breezes dance by. An aromatic, night-blooming garden offers a peaceful and tranquil spot to rest and relax at the end of the day. It is the perfect place for a casual summer party, an evening reception, a romantic tryst, or a quiet retreat to reflect and rejuvenate the senses.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Common Sense Gardens How to Plan and Plant Them In the course of time the furniture of our fore fathers went out of fashion and was superseded by many different styles more or less fantastic, and generally hideous, yet after a hundred years or more we find the chairs of Chippendale and the mirrors and tables of Hepplewhite just as beautiful as on the day they were made, and just as effective and dignified in a new house as in an old one, because they had merit, because brains and skill and time were given to their making.
