Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Plan of Preparing Teachers The State Normal School at San Francisco was established by Act of Legislature, March 22, 1899. Upon organization, its Board of Trustees recognized that the state is not in need, at present, of a larger number of persons holding certificates to teach. It was determined, therefore, to make no effort to build up a large school, but to bend all energies toward establishing a school which should graduate only teachers of superior efficiency. In determining upon this policy the Board took measures to guard against two causes of failure which in the history of normal school administration, have been more or less destructive: (1) a low standard of admission, which has made it impossible to give, in the limited period of normal school instruction, necessary academic instruction, the pedagogics of education, and adequate practical training; (2) personal and political interference in the administration of the school. At the meeting of the Joint Board of California Normal Schools held July, 1899, immediately after the organization of the San Francisco Board, a resolution was adopted providing that graduation of accredited (high) schools with credentials for admission to the State University should be accepted as equivalent to the first two years of the regular normal school course of four years. The San Francisco school organized upon the authority of this provision. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Plan Book for Teachers Classic Reprint written by Charles M. Stebbins and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plan Book for Teachers The Subject-matter. Our interest in subject-matter is concerned, not simply with the selection of matter that is adapted to the age and development of the child mind from the standpoint of dilfi culty, but just as vitally with the content of the stories. What should guide us in the selection of subject-matter? This is a question that naturally arises. The child of six is concerned chiefly with discovering the world about him, particularly those things that concern him directly. He is full of life and activity, and is therefore drawn to those things that have to do with life and activity. His power of observation is not keen. He sees clearly only what is striking. Bright colors, lively action, unusualstories, verse with quick movement, are the things that appeal to his senses. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Plan for Teaching Beginners to Read Realizing from my experience in teaching primary reading that preliminary work is necessary before putting a book into the hands of the child, I have tried this plan for beginners and have found it successful. Print is used entirely. The capital letters measure 21/2 inches, and the small ones 13/4 inches. Being large, the print is readily seen by the class. I have divided my plan into three parts: I. (1) The vocabulary. (2) Single sentences. II. Two sentences related in thought. III. The final charts. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Daily Lesson Plans: A Teacher's Manual; Second Year Daily Lesson Plans, First Year, contains definite plans for each day's work in reading. The book met with a cordial reception. Many teachers and supervisors found its suggestions practical and helpful. A similar book was asked for to cover the work of the second year and the present book has been prepared in response to this demand. It has been most gratifying to observe that Daily Lesson Plans has been received, so far as can be known, in the same spirit in which it was prepared, -not as a procrustean plan to be slavishly and blindly followed, but as a vitalized combination of principles and practical applications, to be intelligently adopted, adapted and improved upon by creative teachers, working under the impulse of the professional spirit. Book The Art of Classic Planning

Download or read book The Art of Classic Planning written by Nir Haim Buras and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2020-01-28 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "An accomplished architect and urbanist goes back to the roots of what makes cities attractive and livable, demonstrating how we can restore function and beauty to our urban spaces for the long term. Nearly everything we treasure in the worldÕs most beautiful cities was built over a century ago. Cities like Prague, Paris, and Lisbon draw millions of visitors from around the world because of their exquisite architecture, walkable neighborhoods, and human scale. Yet a great deal of the knowledge and practice behind successful city planning has been abandoned over the last hundred yearsÑnot because of traffic, population growth, or other practical hurdles, but because of ill-considered theories emerging from Modernism and reactions to it. The errors of urban design over the last century are too great not to question. The solutions being offered todayÑsustainability, walkability, smart and green technologiesÑhint at what has been lost and what may be regained, but they remain piecemeal and superficial. In The Art of Classic Planning, architect and planner Nir Haim Buras documents and extends the time-tested and holistic practices that held sway before the reign of Modernism. With hundreds of full-color illustrations and photographs that will captivate architects, planners, administrators, and developers, The Art of Classic Planning restores and revitalizes the foundations of urban planning. Inspired by venerable cities like Kyoto, Vienna, and Venice, and by the great successes of LÕEnfantÕs Washington, HaussmannÕs Paris, and BurnhamÕs Chicago, Buras combines theory and a host of examples to arrive at clear guidelines for best practices in classic planning for todayÕs world. The Art of Classic Planning celebrates the enduring principles of urban design and invites us to return to building beautiful cities."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Teaching Plan of Grammar: Prepared by a Committee The author has tried to make the definitions as simple and clear as possible without sacrificing accuracy. He has purposely avoided baby definitions, such as: A noun is a name-word; a verb is an action-word; an adjective is a quality-word. The whole purpose Of the pamphlet and Of the nomenclature movement generally, is to avoid the waste involved in teaching a child something in one grade or class or school which he must unlearn in the next. Economy of learning requires that what we teach at any stage must remain true ever after. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
