Cree, an Algonquian language, is non-configurational: the grammatical relations of subject and object are not expressed by word order or other constituent structure relations, as they are in a configurational language like English. Instead, subjects and objects are expressed by means of the inflection on the verb. Cree is typical of non-configurational languages in allowing a great deal of word order variation. Milloy describes three distinct eras, each characterized by a paramount motive for war—the wars of migration and territory, the horse wars during the 'golden years' of Plains Indian life, and buffalo wars, which mark the trail to the reserves. Intimately linked to each era was a particular trade pattern and a military system that linked the Cree with other Plains tribes and non-Natives. By tracing these themes, Milloy charts the ability of the Cree to serve their economic interests by forging alliances or undertaking military or diplomatic offensives.

This book challenges long-held misconceptions about the Lowland Cree, and illustrates how historians have often misunderstood the role and resourcefulness of Aboriginal peoples during the fur-trade era. Although their own oral histories tell that the Lowland Cree have lived in the region for thousands of years, many historians have portrayed the Lowland Cree as relative newcomers who were dependent on the Hudson's Bay Company fur-traders by the 1700s. Historical geographer Victor Lytwyn shows instead that the Lowland Cree had a well-established traditional society that, far from being dependent on Europeans, was instrumental in the survival of traders throughout the network of HBC forts during the 18th and 19th centuries.

When Big Bear was young, in the first half of the nineteenth century, he overcame smallpox and other hardships—and eventually followed in the footsteps of his father, Black Powder, engaging in warfare against the Blackfoot. The time would come for him to draw on these experiences and step into a leadership role, as the buffalo began to disappear and his people suffered. This rich historical biography tells of Big Bear’s role as chief of a Plains Cree community in western Canada in the late nineteenth century, at a time of transition between the height of Plains Indian culture and the modern era. During the 1870s and early 1880s, Big Bear became the focal point of opposition for Cree and Saulteaux bands that did not wish to make treaty with Canada. During the early 1880s, he spearheaded a Plains diplomatic movement to renegotiate the treaties in favor of the Aboriginal groups whose way of life had been devastated. Although Big Bear personally favored peaceful protest, violent acts by some of his followers during the North-West Rebellion of 1885 provided the federal government with the opportunity to crush him by prosecuting him for treason. His story provides fascinating insight into this era of North American history.
