The extensive marshes a, b, c, d, e, f, which accompany the Kirke Jos rivulet along the greater part of its course, have been noticed by nearly all modern travellers in the Tread.1 Now these marshes were known to Homer, and as they are entirely the produce of the springs, his knowledge of the one may be safely accepted as a proof that he knew the other. The marshes are not only mentioned by the poet, but what could scarcely have been expected, he has given us their dimensions in definite terms, which are at once curiously instructive, and quite intelligible without the help of tables of Metrology. Speaking of one of Priam's ancestors, he says, "Dardanus had a son, king Erichthonius, who was the richest of mortal men; he had three thousand mares grazing in the marsh, rejoicing in their tender foals." What a picture have we here of the public economy of the heroic age in one passage of nervous brevity and pastoral beauty! We are told in four lines, that the Trojan prince was a breeder of horses, that he lived in a pastoral age when flocks and herds constituted the staple of a king's wealth, and that three thousand mares, with a wet meadow to feed them, made Erichthonius the richest man then living. And with what true poetic taste a gleam of sentiment is introduced, expressive of the happiness of the mares in the company of their "tender" offspring! The word lAos means "a marsh meadow,"1 "a marsh; a marshy but yet verdant and bushy place."2 In two other passages of the Iliad3 the sense is rendered more precise by add

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many years I had wanted to write something about Troy and the Classical Age; ever since my earlier archaological 'digs' and flint knapping and an early essay on Troy, quite unplanned, that had my strict Headmaster quite aghast (and even myself). I expect it was something hidden within my psyche which knows a former life, I hesitate to go t here. Notwithstanding that, this book describes not just the story of 'Troy' but theories of whether it did exist, with recent archaeological 'finds'. The work done at Troy by Schliemann is portrayed, also the work of Dorpfeld, Blegen and more recently the modern methods of the recently deceased Professor Manfred Korfmann and the theories of Joachim Latacz are explored, with emphasis on the University of Tuebingen TROIA Project, which is consistently attracting international attention. Not only is Troy portrayed, but the travels of John Morritt to locate the site of Troy. The interesting way Morritt circumnavigated the Napoleonic armies makes one wonder if he was on a clandestine mission to record topography, as he later makes un-historical observations of military movements in an area the French navy were to invade to reach Egypt, etc. If the reader receives any benefit from this book, I will consider that I have done my part. If not, I recomend it wholeheartedly as a sure-fire cure for insomnia. Robert D. Morritt
