Book Divine Blessing and the Fullness of Life in the Presence of God

Download or read book Divine Blessing and the Fullness of Life in the Presence of God written by William R. Osborne and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2020-09-24 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of blessing pervades the everyday life of Christians—from testimonies recounting God's provision, to praise songs, to wishing someone well. In fact, the term has been so integrated into Christian language that it is rarely considered thoughtfully. In the pages of Scripture, blessing seems to be either physical or spiritual, but a fuller biblical-theological approach reveals that God's blessing has always been both spiritual and physical. In Divine Blessing and the Fullness of Life in the Presence of God, William Osborne traces the theme of blessing throughout Scripture as he guides readers into a deeper understanding of how God's gracious benevolence impacts the everyday lives of Christians.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The astonishing, Job-like story of how an existence filled with loss, suffering, questioning, and anger became a life filled with shocking and incomprehensible peace and joy. Vaneetha Risner contracted polio as an infant, was misdiagnosed, and lived with widespread paralysis. She lived in and out of the hospital for ten years and, after each stay, would return to a life filled with bullying. When she became a Christian, though, she thought things would get easier, and they did: carefree college days, a dream job in Boston, and an MBA from Stanford where she met and married a classmate. But life unraveled. Again. She had four miscarriages. Her son died because of a doctor's mistake. And Vaneetha was diagnosed with post-polio syndrome, meaning she would likely become a quadriplegic. And then her husband betrayed her and moved out, leaving her to raise two adolescent daughters alone. This was not the abundant life she thought God had promised her. But, as Vaneetha discovered, everything she experienced was designed to draw her closer to Christ as she discovered "that intimacy with God in suffering can be breathtakingly beautiful."

Book Psalms

  • Author : Howard N. Wallace
  • Publisher : Sheffield Phoenix Press

  • Pages : 210 pages

Download or read book Psalms written by Howard N. Wallace and published by Sheffield Phoenix Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Book of Psalms is often seen as an anthology of prayers and hymns from which the reader may extract a selection as need or interest dictates. However, a recent development in Psalms scholarship has been a discussion of whether the collection of psalms has some overall structure. Is the whole of the Book of Psalms greater than the sum of its individual parts? This commentary argues that it is and presents a continuous reading of the Book of Psalms. Moreover, the long-standing tradition, found within both Judaism and Christianity, of associating the psalms with David is used as a reading strategy. In this volume, the Psalms are presented sequentially. Each has its place in the collection but thirty-five are treated at greater length. They are read, at least in the first two books (Psalms 1-72), as if they were David's words. Beyond that a more complex and developed association between David and the Psalms is demanded. David becomes a figure of hope for a different future and a new royal reign reflecting the reign of Yahweh. Throughout, David remains a model of piety for all who seek to communicate with God in prayer. It is in light of this that later disasters in the life of Israel, especially the Babylonian Exile, can be faced. In the Book of Psalms, the past, in terms of both David's life and the history of Israel, is the key to future well-being and faithfulness."--Back cover.

Book A Psalm a Day

  • Pages : 340 pages

Download or read book A Psalm a Day written by John Nugée and published by Self Publishing House. This book was released on 2021-04-14 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A reflective and uplifting study of the Book of Psalms, interspersed with a daily journal through the spring and summer of 2020 as the coronavirus pandemic took hold of the UK. In response to the dramatic changes and restrictions on our lives caused by the outbreak and spread of the virus, from 15th March 2020, and for 150 days thereafter, John Nugée studied one psalm per day, reflecting on both their origins and meaning for the people who wrote them and their relevance to our lives today. A Psalm a Day brings these short commentaries together, guiding the reader through each passage of the Psalter with a daily meditation. While the Book of Psalms-a collection of songs, prayers and meditations on man's relationship with God-has inspired and comforted the faithful for over 2,000 years, revisiting this Old Testament book during the first of the UK's lockdowns provided much hope and focus for Nugée, and for fellow members of his bible study group. Alongside these analyses of the psalms, each day is marked with a diary entry taking the reader through the first five months of change as COVID-19 struck. Featuring both his personal day-to-day life and that of the country as a whole, Nugée's journal provides a fascinating snapshot of this historic period of time. Written in and clear and simple style, A Psalm a Day can be read in sequence or used as a book of reference and inspiration in conjunction with the Book of Psalms-one of the best-loved books of the Bible, as fresh and fitting today as the day the psalms in it were first written. Perfect for those looking to draw more meaning from life, those on a spiritual or religious path, and those searching for solace in a time of uncertainty and upheaval.

Download or read book The Psalms written by Samuel L. Terrien and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2003 with total page 1020 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this monumental work, his most ambitious undertaking, the late Samuel Terrien brings together a lifetime of scholarship on Psalms, long the wellspring of Jewish spirituality as well as the main hymnal of the Christian church. The book's insightful and clearly written introduction treats such subjects as the longevity and ecumenicity of the psalms, their Near Eastern background, the Hebrew text and ancient versions, their music, their strophic structure, their literary genre, their theology, and their relation to the New Testament. In the commentary itself Terrien freshly elucidates the theological significance of these collected poems by putting readers in touch with the formal versatility and religious passion of the psalmists themselves. While Terrien always engages in scientific exegesis before drawing theological conclusions, he is careful to allow full expression to the theological -- and, especially, the doxological -- voice of these unmatched spiritual songs. The result is a commentary that provides a link between the archaic language of Psalms and the intellectual demands of modern thinking and spirituality. Throughout his exposition Terrien shows great respect for the scribal testimony of the Jewish tradition, especially the consonants of the Masoretic text. He likewise displays great care in finding the most accurate meaning for Hebrew words of obscure origin. This meticulous work renders a translation of Psalms more reliable than those of Terrien's predecessors. He also draws on many fruitful gains of structural analysis in discerning the strophic divisions within the Hebrew text. Often he finds unity of composition where earlier critics denied it. And for readersinterested in specific aspects of translation and interpretation, Terrien has appended bibliographical lists of modern works on each psalm.
