Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a work of cultural criticism that recalls the concerns of Foucault, Hayden White, Zizek, and others Decentering Music examines the struggle for the authority to speak about music at a time when the humanities are in crisis. By linking the institutions that support musical research, including professional associations and universities, to complex historical changes such as globalization and the commodification of knowledge, Korsyn undertakes a critique of musical scholarship as an institutional discourse, while contributing to a general theory of disciplinary structures that goes beyond the limits of any single field. In asking a number of fundamental questions about the models through which disciplinary objects in music are constructed, Korsyn suggests unexpected relationships between works of musical scholarship and the cultural networks in which they participate. Thus David Lewin's theory of musical perceptions is compared to Richard Rorty's concept of the "liberal ironist," Susan McClary's feminist narrative of music history is juxtaposed with T.S. Eliot's "dissociation of sensibility," and Steven Feld's work in recording the music of the Kaluli people is compared to the treatment of ambient sound in contemporary cinema. Developing a framework for interpretation in dialogue with a number of poststructuralist writers, Korsyn goes far beyond applying their thought to the analysis of music; by showing the cultural dilemmas to which their work responds, Korsyn suggests how musical research already participates in these ideas. Rather than impose any single method, Decentering Music empowers readers to choose for themselves by interrogating their own values and ideological commitments, exploring the enabling conditions for statements about music. By demonstrating the complicity of opposing positions and challenging readers to reexamine their own values, Decentering Music will surely provoke debate, while appealing to readers in a variety of fields, and to anyone concerned about the crisis in the humanities.

Book The Canon and the Curricula

Download or read book The Canon and the Curricula written by E. Eugene Helm and published by Pendragon Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After a century of trial-and-error in the task of defining itself, the discipline of musicology had gradually gained a hard-won place on American university campuses. Now the musicological curriculum is being challenged by such phenomena as political correctness, questioning the canon, and ethnomusicological expansions or contractions of the traditional boundaries of historical musicology. These challenges are caused, says the author of this book, by the most powerful social force of our time-namely, the ambition to foster or restore individual cultural, ethnic, and political identities. Step by step, Professor Helm has shown the importance of upgrading undergraduate music programs. Graduate training in musicology would make a quantum leap ahead if `undergraduate' curricula in music were properly overhauled to make room for that rare undergraduate who is gifted as both musician and scholar.... If the current E-mail of American musicologists is any indication, the topic of the musical canon is hotter than ever.

Book Redefining Music Studies in an Age of Change

Download or read book Redefining Music Studies in an Age of Change written by Edward W. Sarath and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-09-13 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Redefining Music Studies in an Age of Change: Creativity, Diversity, Integration takes prevailing discourse about change in music studies to new vistas, as higher education institutions are at a critical moment of determining just what professional musicians and teachers need to survive and thrive in public life. The authors examine how music studies might be redefined through the lenses of creativity, diversity, and integration. which are the three pillars of the recent report of The College Music Society taskforce calling for reform. Focus is on new conceptions for existent areas—such as studio lessons and ensembles, academic history and theory, theory and culture courses, and music education coursework—but also on an exploration of music and human learning, and an understanding of how organizational change happens. Examination of progressive programs will celebrate strides in the direction of the task force vision, as well as extend a critical eye distinguishing between premature proclamations of “mission accomplished” and genuine transformation. The overarching theme is that a foundational, systemic overhaul has the capacity to entirely revitalize the European classical tradition. Practical steps applicable to wide-ranging institutions are considered—from small liberal arts colleges, to conservatory programs, large research universities, and regional state universities.

Book The Education of the Professional Musician

Download or read book The Education of the Professional Musician written by Hildegard C. Froehlich and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The legendary Greek figure Orpheus was said to have possessed magical powers capable of moving all living and inanimate things through the sound of his lyre and voice. Over time, the Orphic theme has come to indicate the power of music to unsettle, subvert, and ultimately bring down oppressive realities in order to liberate the soul and expand human life without limits. The liberating effect of music has been a particularly important theme in twentieth-century African American literature. The nine original essays in Black Orpheus examines the Orphic theme in the fiction of such African American writers as Jean Toomer, Langston Hughes, Claude McKay, James Baldwin, Nathaniel Mackey, Sherley Anne Williams, Ann Petry, Ntozake Shange, Alice Walker, Gayl Jones, and Toni Morrison. The authors discussed in this volume depict music as a mystical, shamanistic, and spiritual power that can miraculously transform the realities of the soul and of the world. Here, the musician uses his or her music as a weapon to shield and protect his or her spirituality. Written by scholars of English, music, women's studies, American studies, cultural theory, and black and Africana studies, the essays in this interdisciplinary collection ultimately explore the thematic, linguistic structural presence of music in twentieth-century African American fiction.

Book Beyond the Conservatory Model

Download or read book Beyond the Conservatory Model written by Michael Stepniak and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-09-05 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amid enormous changes in higher education, audience and music listener preferences, and the relevant career marketplace, music faculty are increasingly aware of the need to reimagine classical music performance training for current and future students. But how can faculty and administrators, under urgent pressure to act, be certain that their changes are effective, strategic, and beneficial for students and institutions? In this provocative yet measured book, Michael Stepniak and Peter Sirotin address these questions with perspectives rooted in extensive experience as musicians, educators, and arts leaders. Building on a multidimensional analysis of core issues and drawing upon interviews with leaders from across the performing arts and higher education music fields, Stepniak and Sirotin scrutinize arguments for and against radical change, illuminating areas of unavoidable challenge as well as areas of possibility and hope. An essential read for education leaders contemplating how classical music can continue to thrive within American higher education.
