Book The Dreamer Cometh

Download or read book The Dreamer Cometh written by William A. Carleton and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-04-06 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Luther Rice was born on a small farm in Northborough, MA. He underwent a powerful religious conversion as a teenager in a time when spiritual revival was sweeping across New England. Sensing a call to missions, he and Adoniram Judson traveled to India with the Congregational mission agency. While on the ship during the long voyage, his study of Scripture led him to embrace a Baptist view of baptism. He was baptized by immersion upon reaching India and felt compelled to resign as a Congregationalist missionary since he could no longer represent their theology in good faith. He returned to America where he rallied Baptist churches to support missionaries. Though his intention was to return to the mission field, that never happened. Instead, he traveled the country extensively, preaching on evangelism and missions and encouraging Baptists to organize themselves more formally so that missions could be supported more effectively. Many listened to his pleas, and Baptist mission societies sprang up around the nation. He also felt the need to train future pastors and missionaries, so he helped establish Baptist colleges across the nation. Not everyone agreed with his aggressive fundraising efforts or his constant promoting of missionary and educational efforts. Many accused him of only caring about money. But he gave 100 percent of himself to the Lord's work, having never married. He died while on a preaching tour of South Carolina. His legacy lives on today in the colleges he helped found, in numerous Baptist mission boards that trace their roots to his ministry, and in the Luther Rice Lodge, a training facility in Northborough, MA that occupies what was once the Rice family home, barn, and blacksmith shop. All proceeds from the sale of this book support the ministry of the Luther Rice Lodge.

Book Adiel Sherwood

Download or read book Adiel Sherwood written by Jarrett Burch and published by Mercer University Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adiel Sherwood (1791-1879) helped establish some of the first antebellum efforts in education, temperance, and mission outreach in Georgia, especially among Georgia Baptists. Notably, he was head of a school in Eatonton; professor at Columbian College in Washington, DC; chair of sacred literature at Mercer University; president of Shurtleff College in Illinois; president of Masonic College in Missouri; then back to Georgia in 1857 as president of Marshall College at Griffin; whence, following the Civil War, he "retired" to Missouri. But especially in Georgia he is remembered as a venerable Baptist pastor and teacher and an accomplished organizer of Baptist causes. Sherwood submitted the resolution that led to the formation of the Georgia Baptist Convention. By promoting benevolent and educational causes such as Sunday schools and temperance societies, he helped fashion the Georgia Baptist Convention into an active missionary body that eventually overshadowed the antimissionary Baptists in the state. Sherwood was probably the most important spiritual influence in the founding of Mercer University, helping set the tone for creating a Baptist university committed to both inquiring faith and rigorous academics.

Book A Supreme Desire to Please Him

Download or read book A Supreme Desire to Please Him written by E.D. Burns and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2016-12-09 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adoniram Judson was not only a historic figurehead in the first wave of foreign missionaries from the United States and a hero in his own day, but his story still wins the admiration of Christians even today. Though numerous biographies have been written to retell his life story in every ensuing generation, until now no single volume has sought to comprehensively synthesize and analyze the features of his theology and spiritual life. His vision of spirituality and religion certainly contained degrees of classic evangelical piety, yet his spirituality was fundamentally rooted in and ruled by a mixture of asceticism and New Divinity theology. Judson's renowned fortitude emerged out of a peculiar missionary spirituality that was bibliocentric, ascetic, heavenly minded, and Christocentric. The center of Adoniram Judson's spirituality was a heavenly minded, self-denying submission to the sovereign will of God, motivated by an affectionate desire to please Christ through obedience to his final command revealed in the Scriptures. Unveiling the heart of his missionary spirituality, Judson himself asked, "What, then, is the prominent, all-constraining impulse that should urge us to make sacrifices in this cause?" And he answered thus: "A supreme desire to please him is the grand motive that should animate Christians in their missionary efforts."
