Book Family Maps of Tuscaloosa County Alabama Deluxe Edition

Download or read book Family Maps of Tuscaloosa County Alabama Deluxe Edition written by Gregory A. Boyd and published by . This book was released on 2010-05-20 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Locating original landowners in maps has never been an easy task-until now. This volume in the Family Maps series contains newly created maps of original landowners (patent maps) in what is now Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, gleaned from the indexes of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. But it offers much more than that. For each township in the county, there are two additional maps accompanying the patent map: a road map and a map showing waterways, railroads, and both modern and many historical city-centers and cemeteries. Included are indexes to help you locate what you are looking for, whether you know a person's name, a last name, a place-name, or a cemetery. The combination of maps and indexes are designed to aid researchers of American history or genealogy to explore frontier neighborhoods, examine family migrations, locate hard-to-find cemeteries and towns, as well as locate land based on legal descriptions found in old documents or deeds. The patent-maps are essentially plat maps but instead of depicting owners for a particular year, these maps show original landowners, no matter when the transfer from the federal government was completed. Dates of patents typically begin near the time of statehood and run into the early 1900s. 600 pages with 143 total maps What's Mapped in this book (that you'll not likely find elsewhere) . . . 11590 Parcels of Land (with original landowner names and patent-dates labeled in the relevant map) 212 Cemeteries plus . . . Roads, and existing Rivers, Creeks, Streams, Railroads, and Small-towns (including some historical), etc. What YEARS are these maps for? Book Indian Place Names in Alabama

Download or read book Indian Place Names in Alabama written by William A. Read and published by University Alabama Press. This book was released on 1984 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "What is the 'meaning' of names like "Coosa" and "Tallapoosa"? Who named the "Alabama" and "Tombigbee" and "Tennessee" rivers? How are "Cheaha" and "Conecuh" and "Talladega" pronounced? How did "Opelika" and "Tuscaloosa" get their names? Questions like these, which are asked by laymen as well as by historians, geographers, and students of the English language, can be answered only by study of the origins and history of the Indian names that dot the map of Alabama.--from the Foreword Originally published by Professor Read in 1937, this volume was revised, updated, and annotated in 1984 by James B. McMillan and remains the single best compedium on the topic.

Book excerpt: Tuscaloosa (Choctaw for "black warrior") is one of the oldest cities in West Alabama. It shares its name with a chief who fought Spanish conquistador Hernando de Soto in 1540 and a river that stretches from the Appalachian foothills in the north-central region to the floodplain and lowlands of the south. Called "The Druid City" since the 1800s, when large water oaks lined its main streets, Tuscaloosa remains a center of industry, commerce, health care, education, and cultural life, with the university being its dominant source. The former capital (from 1826 to 1846) is affiliated with the Alabama Crimson Tide, catfish, Dreamland, the Black Warrior River, a strong folk and craft tradition, and Gov. George Wallace's 1963 "stand at the schoolhouse door."
