Download or read book The Place Names of Cumberland and Westmorland Classic Reprint written by Walter John Sedgefield and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Place-Names of Cumberland and Westmorland Turning to the Irish annals and Scandinavian sagas, we learn that at the end of the ninth century the Vikings appeared for the first time in the Bristol Channel. They landed first in Glamorganshire, but, being repulsed by the Welsh, crossed over to Ireland, the wealth of whose monasteries was famed far and wide. The numerous Irish kings and chiefs, being ever at war with each other, could offer no effectual resistance to the invaders, and thus began the harrying of Ireland by fleet after fleet from Scandinavia, which lasted over a generation. The later invaders were Norwegians, the finn-gaill, or Fair strangers, ' of the Irish annals. They pushed into the interior and set up kingdoms of their own, and it was not until the decisive battle of Clontarf, in 1014, that the Irish finally regained the mastery in their own land. The coasts of Scotland also suffered from incursions, while the islands were completely taken possession of and settled by Norwegians. For centuries they were counted as Norse colonies, a Norway beyond the seas.' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The origins of Colorado place names offer insightful glimpses into the state's formative years. Emanuel Saltiel named his new community along the Arkansas River Cotopaxi, after a volcano in Ecuador. Rifle Creek and the town of Rifle earned their names thanks to a rifle left behind along the banks of the creek. Optimistic miners mistakenly believed Tarryall had an abundance of gold and thus named it as a place where prospectors could mine and tarry. And despite attempts by government officials to rename a small community along the I-70 corridor in western Colorado, locals refused to call it anything other than No Name. Learn these stories and more as author Jim Flynn unravels the intriguing origins of Centennial State place names.

Book The Dialect of Cumberland

Download or read book The Dialect of Cumberland written by Robert Ferguson and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dialect of Cumberland: With a Chapter on Its Place-Names The importance of our local dialects as a collateral aid in the study of the English tongue needs not now to be asserted. Without reference to those various forms of speech, out of which one has by dint of circumstances become crystalized in the standard tongue, the language can no more be clearly illustrated than it could be were we to omit to compare it with the cognate languages of Europe. The folk-speech of Cumberland has - thanks to the patriotic interest which her sons take in all that belongs to her - had a more ample share of recognition than generally falls to the lot of provincial dialects. Its humour and its pathos, its "canniness" - quaintness with a touch of cynicism - have been ably illustrated in prose, and its rhythmical qualities attested in verse, by the writers whose names appear on the subjoined list.
