Book excerpt: ISSN: 2397-9607 Issue 260 In this 260th ÿissue of the Baba Indaba?s Children's Stories series, Baba Indaba narrates the two Cornish legends of ?THE PISKIE'S FUNERAL and THE LOST LAND OF LYONESSE.? In THE LOST LAND OF LYONESSE,? a lot of truth mingled with the old legends that tell of the lost land of Lyonesse, a fertile and prosperous country that once extended west from Cornwall as far as the Scilly Isles. According to those old traditions a vast number of villages and 140 churches were overwhelmed on that day, over nine hundred years ago, when the angry sea broke in and drowned fertile land of Lyonesse. You?re invited to download and read the legend of how Lyonesse was lost to the British Isles forever. In the legend of THE PISKIE'S FUNERAL, Baba tells us of the church of Lelant, near St. Ives. In the old days the old folks used to say that this was the favourite meeting-place of the piskies, or, as folks from other parts of England would call them, fairies. Strange stories were told by the people of Lelant of the moonlight revels indulged in by the small folk in sheltered corners of that great stretch of sand-dunes that borders the Hayle river. One of the strangest stories is that of a piskie funeral, seen with his own eyes by a respectable villager ever so many years ago. Old Richard, who witnessed this amazing sight, was returning late one night from St. Ives, where he had been in search of fish. As he ascended the hill towards his home, he thought he heard the bell of Lelant church tolling. This struck him as being curious, for it was just midnight, so he went out of his way to have a look at the church, in case anything was wrong. What did he se you ask? Well, you?re invited to download and read the legend of what exactly Old Bill saw. You are invited to download and read these two legends on a dark and stormy night to young, scared children kept awake by the wind, thunder and lightning. Be sure to open the blinds and switch the lights off to create a bit of ?atmosphere?. Book excerpt: In this study, which is first of all a folk-lore study, we pursue principally an anthropo-psychological method of interpreting the Celtic belief in fairies, though we do not hesitate now and then to call in the aid of philology; and we make good use of the evidence offered by mythologies, religions, metaphysics, and physical sciences.

Book An Architecture of the Ozarks

Download or read book An Architecture of the Ozarks written by Marlon Blackwell and published by Princeton Architectural Press. This book was released on 2005-04-07 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I live, practice, teach, and build in northwest Arkansas, in the foothills of the Ozark Mountains. It's a place considered to be in the middle of nowhere, yet ironically close to everywhere. It is an environment of real natural beauty and, simultaneously, one of real constructed ugliness. Abandonment, exploitation, erasure and nostalgia are all aspects of this place and are conditions as authentic as its natural beauty and local form. This land of disparate conditions in not just a setting for my work -- it is part of the work. By choosing to live and work here -- to call it home -- I've been able to get beyond the surface of things, to turn over the rock and discover the complex and rich underbelly of my place -- its visceral presences and expressive character -- that so informs and sustains my efforts. I am working from the conviction that architecture is larger than the subject of architecture." --Marlon Blackwell Marlon Blackwell is a passionate polemicist. He's also a very gifted architect. The projects in this first monograph on the "radical ruralist," as touted by the Royal Institute of British Architects, offer a new architectural language that at once celebrate the vernacular and transgress the boundaries of the conventional. The results are -- we can't help it, there's no better word -- beautiful. Incisive essays by David Buege, Dan Hoffman, and Juhani Pallasmaa and lush photography by Tim Hursley, Richard Johnson, and Kevin Latady explore Blackwell's projects, including his widely acclaimed Keenan TowerHouse, the award-winning Moore HoneyHouse, 2Square House, and Flynn-Schmitt BarnHouse, studios, and institutional buildings.
