Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY CHICAGO TRIBUNE • A thrilling adventure of danger and deep-sea diving, historic mystery and suspense, by the author of Shadow Divers Finding and identifying a pirate ship is the hardest thing to do under the sea. But two men—John Chatterton and John Mattera—are willing to risk everything to find the Golden Fleece, the ship of the infamous pirate Joseph Bannister. At large during the Golden Age of Piracy in the seventeenth century, Bannister should have been immortalized in the lore of the sea—his exploits more notorious than Blackbeard’s, more daring than Kidd’s. But his story, and his ship, have been lost to time. If Chatterton and Mattera succeed, they will make history—it will be just the second time ever that a pirate ship has been discovered and positively identified. Soon, however, they realize that cutting-edge technology and a willingness to lose everything aren’t enough to track down Bannister’s ship. They must travel the globe in search of historic documents and accounts of the great pirate’s exploits, face down dangerous rivals, battle the tides of nations and governments and experts. But it’s only when they learn to think and act like pirates—like Bannister—that they become able to go where no pirate hunters have gone before. Fast-paced and filled with suspense, fascinating characters, history, and adventure, Pirate Hunters is an unputdownable story that goes deep to discover truths and souls long believed lost. Book Treasure Neverland

Download or read book Treasure Neverland written by Neil Rennie and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2013-09-12 with total page 1956 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Treasure Neverland is about factual and fictional pirates. Swashbuckling eighteenth-century pirates were the ideal pirates of all time and tales of their exploits are still popular today. Most people have heard of Blackbeard and Captain Kidd even though they lived about three hundred years ago, but most have also heard of other pirates, such as Long John Silver and Captain Hook, even though these pirates never lived at all, except in literature. The differences between these two types of pirates - real and imaginary - are not quite as stark as we might think as the real, historical pirates are themselves somewhat legendary, somewhat fictional, belonging on the page and the stage rather than on the high seas. Based on extensive research of fascninating primary material, including testimonials, narratives, legal statements, colonial and mercantile records, Neil Rennie describes the ascertainable facts of real eighteenth-century pirate lives and then investigates how such facts were subsequently transformed artistically, by writers like Defoe and Stevenson, into realistic and fantastic fictions of various kinds: historical novels, popular melodramas, boyish adventures, Hollywood films. Rennie's aim is to watch, in other words, the long dissolve from Captain Kidd to Johnny Depp. There are surprisingly few scholarly studies of the factual pirates - properly analysing the basic manuscript sources and separating those documents from popular legends - and there are even fewer literary-historical studies of the whole crew of fictional pirates, although those imaginary pirates form a distinct and coherent literary tradition. Treasure Neverland is a study of this Scots-American literary tradition and also of the interrelations between the factual and fictional pirates - pirates who are intimately related, as the nineteenth-century writings about fictional pirates began with the eighteenth-century writings about supposedly real pirates. 'What I want is the best book about the Buccaneers', wrote Stevenson when he began Treasure Island in 1881. What he received, rightly, was indeed the best book: the sensational and unreliable History of the Pyrates (1724).

Book The Everything Pirates Book

Download or read book The Everything Pirates Book written by Barb Karg and published by Everything. This book was released on 2007-04-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the corsairs of the Barbary Coast to Blackbeard to Jean Lafitte, pirates have been a part of every culture for centuries. Sometimes terrifying but always colorful characters, their history is as rich with controversy as it is with gold doubloons. The Everything Pirate Book is full of fascinating and little-known facts. Did you know that: Around 75 B.C., Julius Caesar was captured and ransomed by Cilician pirates. After he was released, it is said that he immediately hunted down his captors and killed them. Scottish seafarers and pirates were often nicknamed "red legs" because they wore kilts year round, and their bare legs were often wind- or sunburned. The image of the classic pirate, with flowing clothes, pegleg, eyepatch, parrot on his shoulder, and treasure map in his hand is primarily a result of Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island. With each passing decade, the legends surrounding pirates have grown to epic proportion, right down to their peglegs and buried treasure. The Everything Pirate Book will take you on a pirate tour from ancient times to their Golden Age to the modern-day search for buried treasure and reveals the truth behind the Hollywood hype. AUTHOR: Barb Karg is an author, screenwriter, and enthusiast of pirate history and lore. She is the author of The Everything Freemason Book and The Everything Filmmaking Book. A seasoned writer, she has also authored or co-authored eight other books. When not writing, Barb works as an editor, designer, and layout specialist and lives in Depoe Bay, OR. Arjean Spaite is a freelance writer, editor, and researcher. Arjean's writing honors include winning Ohio's essay competition, Friendship Among Women. She lives in Boardman, OH.

Book The Duel on the Beach

Download or read book The Duel on the Beach written by Rafael Sabatini and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2021-11-09 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Duel on the Beach" is a seafaring adventure novel by the famed Anglo-Italian author Rafael Sabatini. Like the author's earlier book 'Captain Blood', it focuses on piracy in the seventeenth century Caribbean. When Major Sands left Barbados after the death of the governor, Sir John Harradine, he had every reason to congratulate himself that the fortune which he had gone overseas to seek was at last within his reach. For homing with him on the fine ship Centaur was the late governor's daughter, sole heiress to the considerable wealth which Sir John had amassed during his term of office. The long voyage before them with its constant association must afford him opportunities of contriving that the lady and her fortune should be contracted to him by the time they reached Plymouth. But when a French naval officer Monsieur de Bernis takes an interest in the young lady, a collision between the two men is inevitable...
